179024683Dublin: Byrne 1790. First Irish Edition. 8vo pp. 160. Front hinge loose. Bound in rubbed and some worn leather backed paper boards paper lacking from front cover with some library stamps inside. A good copy for all that. Entirely printed in red. An English edition appeared the same year. See Tourneux Bibliographie de l'histoire de Paris pendant la revolution Francaise 3.13483; ESTC T108411 for the UK Edition; not in Martin-Waller or Saricks. The original French edition of this pretended to be the official list of pensioners published by the government. It was more likely issued to embarrass the ruling class portraying them as a group of loafers living off the work of the population burdened with taxes. It's appearance in England is an indication of the British Jacobean interest in the French goings on. The existence of a Dublin printing is especially strange given that the Irish working population spoke mostly Gaelic and this nasty work is not really aimed at the ruling class who were the subject of its satire. The British library Catalogue offers a possible attribution to Jean-Baptiste Martin Louis La Reynie de la Bruyere q.v. Querard 4.558-559. Byrne unknown books

1673V75714London acc. to Wing: Publisher not identified 1673. Hardcover. Good. Octavo 165x105mm in darkened calf-covered boards neatly repaired with remnants of original spine leather viii310pp2pp blank. Titlepage missing upper right corner but text not affected staining to lower edge throughout but not affecting text. Ink ownership dated 1750/1 at top of titlepage another "Catherine Sponer" on verso of final blank. Fore-edge staining/soiling mainly to beginning and end expecially in bottom left hand corner but not affecting readability. Corners rounded but with good margins throughout. Peter Walsh was born in County Kildare. He was guardian of the Franciscan friary at Kilkenny 1648-1650 and then served as chaplain to Castlehaven s army in Munster. All Catholic clergy captured by the Cromwellians were executed and Walsh in danger of death fled Ireland eventually to London where he lived obscurely until the Restoration. Walsh remained a devout adherent of the Catholic Church but kept friendly relations with the Anglicans. He wrote 1672-1684 a series of controversial letters against Pope Gregory VII's doctrine of papal supremacy a History of the Remonstrance 1674 and various other works critical of his fellow Catholics. This book - very rare in its first edition as here - is usually attributed to him. It argues for tolerance between religious factions calling for true liberty of conscience. It condemns persecution in relation to religion arguing that Catholics have as much right to be tolerated as Recusants. As long as other faiths hold doctrines that are consistant with peace and government they should be allowed to follow their conscience. Such writings put Walsh at odds with the Catholic church but before his death in 1688 may have influenced King James II`s 1687 declaration of indulgence referenced by Wing W627. 30358Melbourne s.n. 1852. Broadside 210 x 150 mm printed on one side only text set within decorative border surrounding the heading and Psalm LXIX and with a fully contemporary annotation at top left 'P. & O. S. ""Chusan"" 1st arrival at Port Phillip'; in fine condition mounted on card and housed in a modern frame with handwritten note on the reverse: 'John Dowel Whittle 23 years fell overboard from S. S. Chusan first P. & O. steamer into Melbourne on 29th July 1852. He went overboard about 7 miles off Cape Otway about 7.00 am and could not be recovered'; the back is also annotated 'Ex Ingleton Collection'. A rare broadside printed in Melbourne during the first months of the Victorian gold rush. This is the Ingleton copy and is the only surviving example of this broadside we have been able to trace. According to contemporary reports in Melbourne newspapers the unfortunate Whittle was one of the ship's hands on the Chusan and was thrown from the main yard in a storm off Cape Otway. Who knows the young man may well have been contemplating jumping ship in Port Phillip in expectation of making his fortune on the diggings. This broadside is recorded in Ingleton Geoffrey C. A Catalogue of Select Books from the Ingleton Collection 7067 with the spelling Dowell for Dowel.   unknown

183628253G. A. Williams J. Lee etc Cheltenham 1836. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/not applicable. A rare pamphlet that puts the case for a line as per the title above which the promoters thought would be an improvement on or possibly complement the Great Western route via Didcot. As history has proved the scheme did not materialise. The notion of an east-west route outlined here as Norwich to Gloucester via Cambridge and Tring would certainly appeal even today. However the mention of the term 'inclined plane' in the projected route may partly explain why the venture was a non-starter. Ottley 6019 another pamphlet of 1836 and titled 'A Voice from Cheltenham.' and signed 'A Shareholder in the Tring Co.' suggests further complications - 'We have been grossly misled and deluded'. Very good copy paper slightly cockled minor browning of the first and last leaves. Recent good quality binding of quarter calf gilt lettered on the spine with marbled paper boards. No inscriptions. 23 pages. Ottley First Supplement 8565. OCLC does not record any copies although Library Hub shows 2 UK locations viz Oxford and Leicester Universities. Approx. size 8.5" by 5.5".
