84521 6 11 47 folding leaves. Large 8vo orig. yellow patterned wrappers wrappers a little soiled orig. block-printed title label on upper cover new stitching. Korea: 1870s.

A rare anonymous manual for the general education of writers of classical Chinese from late ChosÅn Korea. The term “bamboo slips†originally referred to the material supports of writing in antiquity. In classical Chinese usage of later ages — and in this title — the phrase was used metonymically in reference to the implements and genres of classical Chinese writing.

This book covers the four “rites†of capping marriage funerals and sacrifices. Each rite had specific genres associated with it which a reader of the book would learn to practice. Ample advice is included for writing letters to parents children teachers and friends — and words to use when referring to these individuals — as well as servants and slaves.

While focused on the acquisition of everyday writing skills in classical Chinese this book brings to mind a larger genre of so-called “daily use encyclopedias†Ch.: riyong leishu 日用類書 which flourished in East Asia from at least the 16th century onward but had older antecedents. Those books provided readers even from lower social strata with information for use in a variety of areas. Our book with its national viewpoint and inclusion of elements of elite writing such as classical Chinese verse probably envisaged a rather more elite readership or at least one that had aspirations of social advancement.

Who actually used this book is another question of course and the Compilation offers some hints: the pictured page from the list of “state taboos†contains marginalia that is written in part in vernacular Korean in the han’gÅl alphabet with nouns written in Chinese characters. From what we see of the text it appears that it concerns the ritual of entering the tablet of a recently deceased ancestor to the temple. This is also referred to in the printed text below in the context of the succession of kings and consorts. Vernacular writing was widely practiced within the ChosÅn elite but the brushstrokes — for whatever reason — look a bit hesitant.

On the basis of the phrases used in the list to refer to the ChosÅn kings and royal consorts researchers have concluded that the edition dates from the reign of King Kojong but before the death of Queen MyÅngsÅng that is sometime between 1864 and 1895.

A very good copy. Marginal worming in the final 14 leaves. Our copy agrees with the Harvard copy WorldCat accession number 40692963. unknown

The magazine was enjoyed by Charles Dickens during his teenage years a fact which doesn't come as a surprise due to his later novels. He said that the stories used to 'frighten the wits out of his head'. The 'Register' came about due to the thriving production of cheap reading materials for the working classes. This bookplate has been identified as being that of Sir Richard Burton 1755-1855 of Sacketts Hill House Isle of Thanet Kent. A very scarce and influential penny magazine. 1670601L7London: E Okes for William Whitwood 1670. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 6". None. The first edition of this scarce tract on Ralph Wallis a nonconformist pamphleteer known as 'the Cobler of Gloucester'. This tract appeared following the death of Wallis and focuses on Wallis' ideas and his pamphleteering. Wallis' biographer states to this work that 'His complexion was of a sunburnt gipsy colour and his skin was rough and tawny like singed bacon; his hair was brown and bristly upon his head but his locks were weather-turned like a barber's show periwig'. Despite his Nonconformist views Wallis was raised by Roman Catholic parents. His parents were 'church papists' meaning they conformed to the demands of the Church of England enough to escape persecution. It is believed that Wallis began writing his pamphlets against the government in the 1650's but these early works have not survived. Wallis was apprehended by the government following his dispersion of pamphlets and he was held in custody. He admitted authorship of the works but declared to be in religion 'a Christian' and so was released. His pamphlets were frequently of a scatological tone and featured entertaining anecdotes regarding clergymen whose names and addresses he knew. DNB This work is the ESTC no. R20134. Collated complete. Rebound in full cloth. This biography provides further insight into the political and religious turbulence of the seventeenth century. Rebound in a full cloth binding. Externally excellent with little to no shelfwear. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges. Scattered spotting to the first and last few pages with just the odd spots to margins. Very Good E Okes for William Whitwood hardcover

18855333Edinburgh: N.P. 1885. First edition. A lovely album sized 28cm x 37cm. Most of the albumen photographs are sized 21cm x 27cm. Sadly the album has no ownership details but the first photograph is of a British ship This is HMS Malabar a Euphrates-class troopship which appears in several of the photographs so we assume that our traveller was aboard this vessel. Next is a fabulous photograph of what seems to be a theatre troupe perhaps for a fancy dress event on the cruiser as the outfits seem to bear little connection to each other. Sadly there is nothing to identify the participants. Then follows a large photograph of Aden in the Yemen and one of the Suez Canal from Suez itself. The following three photographs are of Port Said at the other end of the canal. Then follow Sixteen photographs of Cairo and district including the pyramids mosques and including several photographs by Félix Bonfils and H Arnoux. Two of the photographs have a small area of loss where the photos have stuck together in the album but with fairly minor loss. Included in these are a lovely photographs of date sellers and a praying man both studio photographs by Zangaki Brothers Janos and Adelphoi and a group of camels about to set off. We return to the Suez canal for the next photograph where the Malabar is photographed by the Zangaki brothers. This image was lately used in the Larousse dictionary with two more photgraphs of the Malabar on the canal. Photographed by the Zangaki brothers. These 26 photographs make up the "Middle Eastern" portion of the album. The next photograph is of the harbour at Malta and there are a total of nine large photographs of Malta. As an interlude is a curious photograph of a cartoon / caricature of a boat being pulled and labelled "The Nile 1884-5." Next we find a lovely photograph of the Rock of Gibraltar from the Spanish coast and two further photographs of Gibraltar landmarks. The next stop on our journey is Norway where there are seven photographs of Christiania Oslo. There is a final Norwegian photograph which is a hand coloured photograph of young women in traditional Norwegian costume. Finally the traveller returns to the United Kingdom and arrives at the Forth Bridge and Edinburgh with two beautiful large sized photographs. Finally are seven smaller but still very respectable albumen photographs of Edinburgh landmarks. These each are 13cm x 21cm. So in total we offer an album of 50 pages containing a total of 56 albumen photographs 49 large format and seven slightly smaller. . Première édition. Un bel album au format 28 cm x 37 cm. 10 parts in 3 vols., roy. 8vo., First Edition, text in English, with very numerous chromolithographed and tinted plates (original tissue guards present where called for), many large folding maps on japon, and some hundreds of monochrome photographs (a number full-page), and maps in the text; original salmon cloth, backs lettered and tooled in gilt, red sprinkled edges, ORIGINAL WRAPPERS PRESERVED, expertly rebacked with old backstrips laid down, a remarkably bright, clean set. This magnificent record of one of the earliest major international conflicts of the twentieth century is remarkable on several counts. In essence an early partwork, it was compiled and issued whilst the war was still in progress, enabling its readers to follow the course and consequences of the fighting in a manner previously unparalleled. Certainly it is unique is the comprehensiveness and detail of its coverage, and in the variety and extent of its illustrations, the two together constituting a truly massive documentary resource.
