330 x 255 mm (13 x 10 pouces).

19003298France: n/a 1900. Wonderful French architectural manuscript portfolio on 'Perspective'. This appears to be a student's own manuscript and sketches from an architectural or art course. All of the contents are dealing with perspective in different forms. Some are purely mathematical such as the design and sketches of cones and other shapes. Others are examples of sketches drawn in proper perspective. The portfolio contains a large number of loose leaves. Each aspect text in French has one or more illustrations following. Many but not all of the pages have pencilled numbers to the top edge. In total there are 48 pages of text and 64 pages of illustrations / diagrams. In fact there are a few more but we have only counted "significant" pages. The paper is a little darkened and there are a few very minor closed tears to the page edge. The folder has cracking to the spine edge and is darkened and at least one of the ties is still functioning. The front has a tipped on printed illustration with the title. An attractive and fascinating piece. 330 x 255 mm 13 x 10 inches. Magnifique portfolio de manuscrits architecturaux français sur 'Perspective'. 1912GEN36-I-13London : Anon c1912. Cloth. Very Good. 11" by 7.5". None. A collection of travel photographs from London to Algiers. Photographs follow a journey from London to Folkestone across the channel through Dijon to Marseilles and then from Marseilles to Algiers by boat. Dated from the two boats in the photographs. The photographer travels on the SS Charles-Roux a ship build in 1908 and France's first turbine steamer. The ship was in service until 1936. In one of the photographs at the docks at Marseilles there is a photograph of the Theodore Mante. The Theodore Mante was build in 1912 and was a passenger steam ship. However it only retained this name until 1917 when it was renamed Mustapha II. Therefore this album is definitely from between 1912 and 1917. It is highly likely that these photographs are Pre-World War I. The Theodore Mante became the Margit and in 1939 arrived in Malta when war broke out. Due to an air raid on the 19th April 1941 the vessel was hit and suffered extensive damage. It sunk and was not discovered until the 1970s. 48 photographs on 12 leaves. Each photograph is captioned with the location and subject of the image. To the front pastedown is painted the journey undertaken with the title 'A Trip to North Africa'. There is a hand-painted map indicating the places visited. These photographs also have several images of the Paris Lyons & Mediterranean Railway. In the photograph of Charing Cross London there is a woman in the foreground holding a newspaper with the headline clear 'Women Mobbed at Protest' clearly a reference to the Suffragist movement of the time. In a full cloth binding with gilt stamping to the bottom of front board. Externally rubbed to the head and tail of spine and to the joints. Bumping to the head and tail of spine. Small loss to the extremities due to rubbing. Front hinge is strained but firm. Closed tear to the front pastedown due to straining of hinge. Bookseller's label to the rear pastedown Eric Inwood. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Anon hardcover

1850QQ0323No publisher 1850. Striking 19th-century black papier-mache or 'carton-pierre' black 'Monastic' boards originally used on Eyre & Spottiswood's 1847 12mo edition of the bible and their 1848 Book of Common Prayer. These editions were originally produced with a matching papier-mache spine. This volume however has these papier-mache boards re-applied remarkably intact to an originally blank notebook in a black calf binding. Raised bands to spine. Spine has been personalised with initials 'A P' in gilt gothic lettering near base. Moulded papier-mache boards in deep relief have Christ with right hand raised in blessing to centre with elaborate frame incorporating gothic tracery and vine acanthus and lily motifs. Delicate gilt decor to papier-mache board edges. Slight rubbing to spine and mild wear to papier-mache boards with some minor cracking to edges and slight chipping to corner. Small loss to top of gothic arch relief to front board. All edges gilt. Blind decor to turn-ins. Endpapers reinforced with white cloth tape at gutters with the same reinforcement to first interior pages at gutter legacy of an early repair. Hinges sound. 12mo 9.5 x 15cm. Minor scattered foxing. 38pp are inscribed in a neat block script likely mid-20th century presumably by 'A P' with prayers all written to rectos leaving versos blank some divided by subject 'elections' 'angels' leaving the majority of pages blank. A sympathetic re-use of these 1840s boards with the inscribed prayers ensuring they continued in use in a devotional context. Robust packaging. Tracking can be added to overseas orders on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. Very Good/Fine. c. 100pp. No publisher Hardcover
