18705067Ingolstadt & Esslingen Krüll and J.F.
18705067Ingolstadt & Esslingen: Krüll and J.F. Schreiber 1870. English translation: "From the War of Liberation 1870. Portrait of a Turko! The avant-garde of the French "army of civilisation" ! Muhamedans destined for the invasion of Southern Germany!" Single sheet printed in original water colour and ink lithograph. 40.5cm x 33 cm. Exceptionally rare old coloured poster on the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 which Schreiber produced for Krüll'sche Buchhandlung in Ingolstadt. In the upper left margin a larger paper damage with loss of the letter "A" of the title bar. Otherwise in good condition apart from a slight crease and damage to the lower left corner. We can find no copies of this poster on sale at the present time. This is a curious poster. While France and the Ottoman Empire had a long history of alliance and co-operation dating back to the 16th century by the time of the Franco-Prussian War this partnership was largely symbolic and did not translate into Ottoman support or intervention during the conflict. We can only assume that this was purely propaganda in modern terms a "dog whistle" to the racist elements of the German population. . Traduction en anglais : "De la guerre de libération de 1870. 1770725L17London: William Bingley 1770. Paperback. Very Good Indeed. 10.5" by 8" . None. A very scarce controversial issue of the eighteenth century radical newspaper 'The North Briton'. The first and only edition of this issue.Being issue 197 of the periodical or 51 of the continuation. This particular issue was published by William Bingley who was gaoled in Newgate and then in King's Bench Prison due to the contents of this issue and issue 50. He was released after two years.'The North Briton' was written anonymously though is closely associated with John Wilkes. Its 45th issue was famous due to the similar number of court cases spawned by the contents of that issue. This particular issue of 'The North Briton' is a letter addressed to William Murray 1st Earl Mansfield and is an attack on his character and his decisions as a figure in parliament. There is mention of the 'Junius' the pseudonym used for tracts written in the 'Public Advertiser' attacking the government. There is discussion of Murray's own view of the Common Law of England and his involvement in commercial law. The author mocks Mansfield for the trials by jury regarding the printing of material attacking the government. The jury found several individuals innocent of libel and this work states 'Ah! my Lord you start! the idea of a jury! that disconcerts your Lordship haunts you wherever you go and proves the plague of your life'. The author of this work defends the concept of a jury and criticises Mansfield for being against this. A very scarce political pamphlet. In modern paper wraps. Externally very smart. A few light marks to wraps. Internally firmly bound. A few light spots to the first leaf. Pages are bright with occasional light spots. Prior owner's occasional ticks to the margins. 182088903London: J. Bailey 116 Chancery Lane 1820. First Edition. Slim Twelvemo. 18cm. Late 19th century half mottled calf over marbled paper covered boards by Bayntun of Bath with a red title label to the spine titled in gilt very much in the style of an older binding. 24pp. with 24pp binder's blanks to rear to stabilize the binding. Light scuffing to corners and spine ends darkening to spine label and a little dulling of the gilt strong tight and handsome; internally clean all edges gilt marbled endpapers later ex libris to front pastedown with traces showing removal of an older one visible beneath hand colored frontispiece illustration with later tissue guard and a small archival tissue repair to a small tear on the fore-edge offsetting of the color and some light soiling to title page the work would originally have been issued as a chapbook in paper wraps. A very good attractive copy of an obscure piece of early 19th century pop culture.
John Bailey was one of those highly-energetic and slightly scurrilous printer-publishers of the early 1800's running alongside Stockdale Dugdale Duncombe and the like in a frenetic race to recognise the current zeitgeist and mine it for pamphlets chapbooks and on occasional multi-volume exposés until the vein ran out and they moved on to the next thing. It could be the sporting Fancy the murky doings of the Ton memoirs of ladies of negotiable virtue the scandalous habits of the French or the diabolical behavior of home grown rakes; if it could be illustrated with a lurid cut and sold to popular acclaim but no legal outcry then it was prime for publication.
This is an indicative offering; a tale of a lady maligned a wandering-handed husband and some untrustworthy foreign types Italians in this case portrayed as being of a nation of bandits promoting the popular and rather thrilling idea that nobody really knows what the aristocracy gets up to but slim little volumes like this can give you a fair idea. Unusually studded with relatively competent verse commentary and enough arch detail for the suggestive reader to wonder whether it is entirely fictional.
It isn't in case you were wondering; it forms part of the Caroline Scandal blizzard of pamphlets and cartoons directed at the indiscretions and marital strife of Caroline of Brunswick the oft estranged wife of King George IV. George despised his wife even after the birth of their daughter and Queen Caroline retired to Italy where her chief advisor and confidante was a gentleman named Bartolomeo Pergami - in short order Caroline and Pergami were rumored to be lovers accusations of adultery and possible treason flew in all directions and a legal deadlock began with both parties George and Caroline whose middle name was of course Amelia denying infidelity whilst pointing the finger at each other. The "Green Ridicule" is a reference to the bags presented at the reading of the bill intended to grant the King a divorce; large green sacks of "evidence" collected by the Milanese authorities much of which was rather hilarious and involved a lot of innkeepers and coachmen testifying to having seen Pergami in flagrante whilst within 20 feet of the noble lady. The resulting legal wrangling and backstabbing had the opposite effect from the one desired by George and rendered Caroline something of a public and political heroine misused by her abusive husband and adopted by reformist political figures seeking to gain ground on an increasingly eccentric and damaging monarchy.
The tone of the tale is therefore rather sympathetic to Lady Amelia in keeping with public sentiment. It is also stated to hopefully be the first part of a series of exposures of the travails of "Lady Amelia" and her somewhat ungallant spouse which suggests it was rushed out mid-trial and may have had subsequent installments as the proceedings continued through 1820. The title itself is possibly a riff on Mary Charlton's work; she published a substantial and popular work with a similar title a few years earlier. Scarce and a little obscure with three holdings in US institutions. J. Bailey, 116 Chancery Lane unknown

18421203561842. Paperback. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Please see Images re this item as I am unable to read Armenian but from my research this appears to be a small single sewn light card covered small almanac. Size 4" x 2. 3" 10cm x 6cm Internal tables and saints’/feast-day listings etc etc. Illustration and decorations in b/w. The line beneath the title on the cover likely specifies the ecclesiastical or liturgical context rather than an author The imprint below the date appears consistent with a Venetian Armenian press probably the Mekhitarists in Venice who produced enormous quantities of small Armenian devotional and educational printing in the 18th–19th centuries. However I can say not of this with 100% certainty. Beige/black printed covers with border decoration front and back cover and on the spine. A scuff to the rear cover removing part of the border decoration but otherwise Very Clean. Internally AS NEW! This little booklet was hidden away and has survived remarkably!.
