A fine very scarce political and religious tract written at the peak of the Popish Plot and therefore ant-Catholic hysteria in England and Scotland. A very scarce pamphlet. ESTC reference no R19980. This is setting A referred to by the ESTC with signature mark 'A' on A1 under 'es' of 'unless'. The first line of p.4 reads 'Lastly if he has' with a lower case 'i'. This work was written in response to Elkanah Settle's pamphlet 'The Character of a Popish Successor'. Settle was a poet and playwright who took an active share in the anti-Popish agitation. However later he exposed Titus Oates and with the Revolution of 1688 his political leanings were more towards the Whigs. This is an analysis and response to Settle's pamphlet. Following this work Settle later recanted his 'The Character of a Popish Successor' and cited the danger of the opinions he expressed. Bound in a limp cloth binding. This book of cocktail recipes features "Thoughts for the occasion" and quippy quotes by famous British celebrities of the time 19 total photographed in their profession and with a facsimile signature to advertise their specialty cocktails using Booth's Gin. At the rear of the book is a map and list of "elect and prodigal places wherein Booth's" is served as well as 22 more cocktail recipes provided by lead bartenders of each establishment including their photographs on cocktail shakers. Also contained are 11 "Further Enticements" and award-winning cocktails from Daily Mail Competitions and British Empire Cocktail Competitions. Plus list of theatres that serve Booth's Gin and a Memoranda section for your own cocktail recipes at rear. A scarce British cocktail guide in good condition unfortunately missing its back cover and with some rusting to the staples. Clean contents. An interesting 1930's period piece. Quite uncommon. Please see Images re this item as I am unable to read Armenian but from my research this appears to be a small single sewn light card covered small almanac. Size 4" x 2. 3" 10cm x 6cm Internal tables and saints’/feast-day listings etc etc. Illustration and decorations in b/w. The line beneath the title on the cover likely specifies the ecclesiastical or liturgical context rather than an author The imprint below the date appears consistent with a Venetian Armenian press probably the Mekhitarists in Venice who produced enormous quantities of small Armenian devotional and educational printing in the 18th–19th centuries. However I can say not of this with 100% certainty. Beige/black printed covers with border decoration front and back cover and on the spine. A scuff to the rear cover removing part of the border decoration but otherwise Very Clean. Internally AS NEW! This little booklet was hidden away and has survived remarkably!. Anyone who doen't wish to buy this but could enlighten me further- please get in touch. Assuming it is as described - pretty scarce. See Images; Thin 32mo 4" tall . paperback
1901AL-46<p>An ink inscription on the first page suggests that the person was a student that the National Park Seminary in Forrest Glen Maryland and that he put the book together in January 1901. The notebook is an art history course shown in cyanotype from ancient Egyptian tombs and obelisks in 3800 B.C. to Raphael's Cherubs on the Sistine Chapel to the then Modern English School of Gainsborough and Rossetti. It may be interesting for current scholars of art history to see how one student put together his reference notebook and the captions.</p><p>The notebook's covers are loose and worn with paper missing off the front back and spine. Some of the pages are loose as well. It is not quite full. I get the impression that space was left for more images. The photos are generally in fine condition.</p>

A scarcely recorded account of the Siege of Plymouth by the Royalists in the Civil War locally published in the bicentennial year of the bloodiest episode in the city's history. Although the source documents on which the narrative is based are not explicitly stated it seems likely that the diary of John Syms Puritan naval chaplain and librarian was one of them. Having refused to surrender to the Royalists the citizenry of Plymouth signed a solemn covenant to fight to the last man; although poorly armed the defenders managed to overcome a formidable attacking force commanded by Sir Richard Grenville. The town held out for the next four years until the Parliamentary army finally prevailed over the Royalists. With the death of Cromwell in 1658 and the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 however retribution was exacted by King Charles II against the leaders of the Plymouth resistance many of whom were imprisoned.
