Paperback, 72 pagina's, nieuwstaat. ISBN 9789061744344. Cesare Pavese (1980-1950, zelfmoord) schreef zes romans, een dagboek ("Leven als ambacht"), essays over poezie en gedichten. Een weinig omvangrijk maar schitterend oeuvre. Enkele van de romans zijn in het Nederlands vertaald, alsook het dagboek. De dertig vertaalde gedichten in "Werken is vermoeiend" - naar een van Pavese's twee bundels, "Lavorare stanca" - stammen uit de periode 1930-1940. De volgorde is chronologisch. Er is een ontwikkeling zichtbaar, van sober en verhalend, naar beeldend en geladen, van registrerend naar wanhopig. Toch gaat het vanaf het begin over de man - of mens - die alleen is. Het decor is afwisselend de stad of het dorp in Noord-Italie, in Piemont. De toon is talmend en nooit luchtig, ondanks de suggestie van spreektaal; er is een sterk sexuele inslag. Een enkel later gedicht bevat een regelrechte politieke aanklacht. De bundel, helaas niet tweetalig, is voorzien van notities bij afzonderlijke gedichten, een nawoord, een bibliografische noot en enkele opmerkingen over het vertaalwerk. De vertaling overtuigt.
