Other Titles: Fuftsik lider. Avrom Reyzn; 18761953, was a Yiddish poet, short-story writer, playwright, and editor. Born in Koidanovo, Russia (now Dzyarzhynsk, Belarus) , Reisen was the son of the Hebrew and Yiddish poet Kalman Reisen (18481921) and the brother of the poet, short-story writer, and translator Sarah (Sore) Reisen (18841974) and the celebrated philologist Zalman Rejzen (18871941) . While he was still a teenager, his talent was recognized by Shalom Aleichem and I. L. Peretz , who arranged for the publication of his earliest poems. After some years in Minsk, Warsaw, Cracow, and Berlin, he settled permanently in New York in 1914. Influenced by Heinrich Heine , whom he translated into Yiddish, he was one of the first Yiddish poets to make use of folksong material. His poetry, though mostly written in conventional quatrains, is suffused by a refined sensibility that adumbrates the writing of Di Yunge . In contrast to the verse of the "sweatshop" generation, such as Morris Vinchevsky or Morris Rosenfeld , his work is characterized by a certain understated Romanticism and melancholy irony. Reisen shared the preoccupation with poverty and social problems manifested by his predecessors, but he entirely eschews their propagandistic rhetoric. Nonetheless, while most of his poetry is softly lyrical, a proportion has sufficiently social-critical implications to have been sung at clandestine workers' meetings in the forests. Many of his poems were set to music and became a standard part of Yiddish folk culture (Denman, EJ, 2011) . Wear and staining to covers, spine bumped . All original spine and binding. Good condition. Beth Elohim, or more simply Congregation Beth Elohim) , founded in 1749, is one of the oldest Jewish congregations in the United States. The congregation is nationally significant as the place where ideas resembling Reform Judaism were first evinced. It meets in an architecturally significant 1840 Greek Revival synagogue designed by Cyrus L. Warner. (Wikipedia, 2017) This program for the year 5677 (1916) includes an appeal from the rabbi, a calendar of holidays and other events for the year, and lists of officers, committees, and members of the synagogue. Bergner's style moves freely between extremes, from compact compositions and minimal coloration to richness and dramatic style. He always maintained a rare combination between figurative description and surrealistic atmosphere. At the heart of his approach lies the understanding that the visual image is a more or less aesthetic representation of the meaning beyond it. More then once Bergner has been defined as a literary painter, in his case meaning a painter who is as comfortable with world literature as he is familiar with Jewish literature. As the son of a Yiddish poet, the stories of Mendele Mokher Seforim (Sholem Yankev Abramovitsh ) , Shalom Aleichem, and I. L. Peretz were a part of his life. At the same time Bergner's art has been an inspiration to many Israeli poets like Dan Pagis, Tuvia Rivner, and Hayim Hefer. Nonostante le discriminazioni che i nazisti impongono da subito agli ebrei, cerca di vivere normalmente la sua vita. Fino a quando il padre viene deportato a Buchenwald: Zdenka non lo rivedrà più. Nel 1942 viene deportata, insieme alla famiglia e al fidanzato Arno, a Terezín, un campo di concentramento a nord-ovest di Praga. Mentre Arno viene spedito in un campo a est, Zdenka vi rimane fino al 1944, quando viene «trasferita» ad Auschwitz: lei e la sorella Lydia sopravvivono alle selezioni, la madre no. Ma a questo punto le sorti della guerra si sono ribaltate, i russi incalzano e cominciano le terribili «marce della morte» verso ovest. Zdenka e Lydia transitano così da Kurzbach e poi dal famigerato campo di Gross-Rosen. E poi sono di nuovo «spostate» a Mauthausen e infine a Bergen-Belsen. Qui, dopo la morte della sorella, Zdenka viene infine liberata dagli inglesi, unica sopravvissuta della sua famiglia. Oggi, a 95 anni, Zdenka è impegnata a portare la sua testimonianza in giro per il mondo, perché tutto ciò che lei ha vissuto non sia dimenticato.

Folding Case. Large Folio. Sixty-two illustrated plates. 44 cm. Nr 289 of a deluxe edition of 2000 copies. First edition. With additional original full-size drawing in 3 colors, with colored pencil, of doves and flowers, with inscription in Hebrew and signed. Housed in original folding-case, loose as issued, original colored pictorial stiff wrappers. Title translates as: 62 Psalms and Verses of the Bible. In French. Preface by Jules Romains. The artist Benn was a renowned Jewish painter who drew inspiration from the Bible and expressed his spiritual connection to it in a body of self-contained and highly integrated work, which was published under the title 62 Psaumes et versets de la Bible. When the Nazis entered Paris, Benns worst premonitions were realized. He was rounded up together with other East European Jews and interned in a holding camp, whose inmates were ultimately destined for a concentration camp in Germany. He was held in that camp for a month, and during that time he sketched the faces of his co-internees and their surroundings. He fell into a deep depression, lost weight, and would probably have died had it not been for the efforts of his wife and friends who managed to smuggle him out of the camp. Arrangements were made to hide the couple in the basement of an apartment house in Paris. Benn and his wife remained there in hiding for the duration of the war. During his twenty six months of confinement, Benn completed a series of sixty two drawings, based on selected psalms and verses of the Bible. The remarkable feature of this body of work is that it represents a radical departure in style from of his other work, and that style, while continuing to evolve after the war, remained exclusively associated with biblical themes. He continued to use biblical themes as subject matter (e. G. , Song of Songs) , and this particular style sets these works quite apart from the other figurative and representational work he did simultaneously. The drawings and the canvasses were critically acclaimed, and the artist was urged to make the works more accessible. In order to accommodate the demand for his biblically inspired work Benn agreed to have the sixty two drawings and paintings reproduced in the form of an album, which was published in 1960 under the title, 62 Psaumes et Versets de la Bible. The publication was issued in a limited edition of 2, 000 copies. The album was prefaced by the French writer Jules Roman, of the Academie Française. (Art of Benn) Subjects: Bible.
