No Date (Mid 20th Century) . 1st edition. Large poster, ca. 42 x 67 cm. In Hebrew. Anti Zionist poster by the Neturei Karta (Ha-Eidah ha-Hareidit), group of ultra-orthodox, mainly in Jerusalem, who regard the establishment of a secular Jewish state in Erez Israel as a sin and a denial of God, and therefore do not recognize the State of Israel. Their name, which is Aramaic for "guardians of the City, " derives from a passage in the Jerusalem Talmud (Hag. 76: 3) stating that religious scholars are the guardians and defenders of the city. Neturei Karta broke away from Agudat Israel in 1935, when the latter attempted to restrain extremist demands for an independent ultra-Orthodox Jerusalem community completely separate from the rest of the Zionist community. The group first adopted the name Hevrat ha-Hayyim, after Rabbi Joseph Hayyim Sonnenfeld. It aimed at creating "a circle free from the influence of the contemporary spirit and its fallacious opinions, " and a condition of membership was "the education of sons and daughters in the traditional Jewish manner, without any change (girls' schools which teach Hebrew do not provide education in the traditional Jewish manner). " The last phrase alluded to Agudat Israel's Bet Ya'akov girls' schools, where the language of instruction is Hebrew. Single page printed letter. 28 cm. Advertisement and coupon by the Zionist Organization of America for the release of Joseph Heller's "The Zionist Idea. " The advertisement declares that "There have been many books about Israel - there have been many books about Zionism - but this is the first volume which traces in full the HISTORY OF AN IDEA! . " Joseph Elijah Heller (1888-1957) was a Lithuanian-Jewish Hebrew writer. He was one of the editors of the German Encyclopaedia Judaica. He later moved to London where he regularly contributed to Haolam, Hadoar, and others (EJ, 2007) . SUBJECTS: Zionism. Two crease marks where this letter was folded. Very good condition. (ZION2-2-30)
Original illustrated delegates and visitors dashboard card for the Bnai Brith Convention District No. 4 in Butte, Montana. The weekend meeting was at the Bnai Brith District Grand Lodge there. An interesting example of Nazi-era protection for American Jews, this ticket was issued with the endorsement of the Butte Chief of Police and the Mayor, who welcomed the attendees with a key to the city and protection from the police. Interestingly, Butte was a Jewish-friendly town from the beginning: Henry Jacobs, a Jewish immigrant from Baden, Germany, who fought as a Confederate soldier at the Battle of Vicksburg, served as Buttes first mayor from 1879 to 1880; he also served as a school trustee, president of the Hebrew Benevolent Association and president of the local chapter of the International Order of Foresters. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript (handwritten) letter (ALS) signed 'Nafia Vekili Behiç' [i. e. Minister of Public Works, Behiç [Erkin]]. 21x14,5 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. Dated February 19, 1928. Written from Ankara. Letterhead 'Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryollari Vekâleti [Ministry of Turkish Republic Railways]'. To an un-named female correspondent. Behiç Erkin was a Turkish career officer, first director (1920-1926) of the Turkish State Railways, nationalized under his auspices, statesman and diplomat of the Turkish Republic, who helped save almost 20,000 ethnic Jews in France during World War II. He was Minister of Public Works, 1926-1928, and deputy for three terms; and an ambassador. He served as Turkey's ambassador to Budapest between 1928-1939, and to Paris and Vichy between August 1939-August 1943. As Turkish ambassador in France under the German Occupation after June 1940, Erkin used the power of his office and nation's neutrality to save Jews who could document a Turkish connection, however slight, from the Holocaust. Other Turkish diplomats in France and elsewhere, were also active in this rescue effort. The consulate staff under Necdet Kent in Marseille was particularly involved.

Fading title gilt lettering on spine, otherwise a very good copy. Scarce bible in Ottoman Turkish, printed by one of the most famous Armenian printers and published by the English & American Bible Societies in Turkey during the second half of the 19th century. Arshag Hagop Boyajian, (1837-1914), was an Ottoman Armenian printer and a leader of the Armenian Protestant community in the Ottoman Empire. He was born in Diyarbakir and educated at Robert College in Istanbul. During the Crimean War (1853-1856), he served as a translator at the headquarters of the British army in Üsküdar (Scutari), on Istanbul's Asian shore. After a short stay in the United States to perfect his knowledge of modern printing techniques, he established a... (Source: Brill).
