Ze behandelt de evolutie in de productie: hoe artisanale brouwers en stokers in de negentiende eeuw onder druk komen te staan van industrialisering en schaalvergroting, hoe na de Tweede Wereldoorlog een tegenbeweging van ambachtelijke brouwers op gang komt. Ook de distributie komt aan bod, met onder andere de opkomst van het flessenbier en de bierhandelaars, en met het toenemend belang van imago en reclame. Er is aandacht voor het toenemend drankmisbruik in de negentiende eeuw, de beteugeling van het alcoholisme in de vorige eeuw en de campagnes vandaag. Dit boek is vooral het verhaal van mensen. Brouwers en stokers die als deftige burgers en politieke leiders in het centrum van de burgerlijke maatschappij stonden. Publisher's olive-green soft cloth boards with black lettering. A couple of former owner's inscriptions to the front paste-down and front free end-paper otherwise a VG copy with slightly soft spine tips. Firm hinges. Cloth in nice condition. No foxing. Firmly bound. Complete with 123 pages including faintly-lined tissue pages between each page of text for taking notes as issued. One of the tissue pages has a penned recipe on it. There is a 56-page catalogue of to the rear of Thacker Spink & Co's Publications. An early Indian cookery book compiled anonymously by a "Thirty-Five Years' Resident" and containing recipes and cooking methods on rice curries soups fish vegetables preserves liqueurs and more along with information on medicines perfumes and cosmetics. Originally published as a first edition in 1880 which is exceedingly uncommon. This - the reprint form 1891 - occasionally appears but this is a much nicer copy than normally encountered. 12mo., First Edition thus, with several woodcut illustrations in the text, neat nineteenth century signature on front free endpaper, title and first page of text; original publisher's brown grained cloth, boards with double frame border enclosing an elaborate an elaborate lozenge all in blind, very neatly recased with new cloth backstrip to style, original gilt lettering laid down, fore-edges lightly dust-soiled else a very good, crisp copy in sympathetically restored publisher's binding. According to the English editor's Preface this scarce work is 'an adapted translation of one of the most popular treatises on French Cookery, entitled La Cuisiniere de la Campagne et de la Ville ou Nouvelle Cuisine Economique, Paris, Audot, 1846'. The success and stature of the French original is compared to that of Mrs. Rundell. It has been suggested that this is in fact a second edition of a work with a similar title published by Thomas Boys in 1825 [Bitting, p. 554; Oxford, p. 157; Wellcome III, 67]; however this would contradict the Preface, and there is no mention of such a kinship in Oxford who lists both volumes. A very nice copy of an extremely scarce work. Oxford, p.177 (recording the publisher as 'David Boyne'). Not in Cagle.
