New English Original bdg. HC. In publisher's special box. Folio. (38 x 28 cm). In English and Turkish. A 19th century album of Ottoman Sultans' portraits. Suna and Inan Kiraç Collection.= Osmanli Padisah portreleri. Bir 19. yüzyil albümü. Inan ve Suna Kiraç Koleksiyonu. In the mind of every Turk, there is a set image for Ottoman Sultans that he has acquired from a variety of sources: school books, historical texts, encyclopaedias, etc. The Ottoman royal image is not altogether unknown to the Europeans either. This is due to the fact that there is a pictorial record of the Ottoman Sultans created by the numerous portraits produced through the centuries by Turkish and European artists. It was a great pleasure for me to write the explanatory text to this special album of sultan portraits in Inan and Suna Kirac collection. The absence of an original text in the album itself complicated the study of the portraits in view of their iconography, especially the richly detailed backgrounds and attributes used for each sultan. This necessitated a thorough study of historical sources and a search for comparative albums. Nevertheless 17 similar albums dating from approximately the same period were recorded and listed after the text. The main question was to explore into the realm of the Ottoman artist to discover his approach to portraiture. In Islam, to read a person's character through the study of his physiognomy has been a science. With this in mind, did the Ottoman artist confine himself only to the preset details of each sultan's physiognomy or did he enrich his knowledge about the sultans through other sources? I strongly believe that the artist of the Kirac album did this. Therefore, in the short texts accompanying each portrait, I chose to give a brief record of the sultan's deeds, interests and personality as revealed in historical sources. In this way, it would be easier to comprehend the artist's interpretation. In the main text, I tried to give a comprehensive summary of the history of royal portraiture among the Ottomans and presented the prototypes to this album. Then came a discussion of the Kirac album itself not only in view of its artistic value but also as a significant source of information about imperial attire and certainly the artistic milieu of the Ottoman Empire in the first decades of the 19th century.
1800ABC_48559Japan 1800. In a passepartout and framed. Drawing size ca. 34 x 39.5 cm; frame size ca. 46 x 51 cm. Oil painting on leather. Late 18th-century painting on leather depicting everyday life on the island of Deshima in Japan created by an anonymous artist who seems to be of Japanese origin possibly originating from the Nagasaki school of painting: the faces of most human figures show remarkable Japanese features despite their reddish-brown hair and Dutch clothing.Judging by a woodcut map of Deshima published in 1780 by Toshimaya Bunjiemon the south-eastern part of the island is shown in the present illustration. On the left the warehouse masters residence next to a tall flagpole with the Dutch flag at top; in the centre the important watergate through which cargo was brought in via ship with four Dutch merchants one seen from behind and two Javanese servants in front of the gate; on the right the warehouse "De Lelie" The Lily. In the background lying in the bay of Nagasaki a Dutch three-master has been depicted with fourteen hoisted Dutch flags and several sailors on deck and in the rigging. This ship closely resembles a transom return ship in Dutch: "spiegelretourschip" which was used by the Dutch East India Company VOC during its whole existence.Based on the depicted style of clothing of the Dutch merchants we assume that this painting could have been made during the second half of the 18th century. The artificial island of Deshima was a small fan-shaped island used as trading post initially by the Portuguese until 1639 and subsequently by the Dutch from 1641 until 1858. During the Tokugawa Shogunate the military government of Japan in the Edo period of 1603-1868 foreigners were not allowed to enter the Japanese territory and the island of Deshima was the only place where initially only the Portuguese and later only the Dutch were admitted. With some flaking of the paint off the leather slightly affecting the image but mainly affecting the upper outer corners. Otherwise in good condition.l H. Paul Nederlanders in Japan 1600-1854. De VOC op Desjima pp. 106-107. unknown

Old price sticker to ffep. Small tear to front panel of DJ with a bit of loss. ; How did figure painting fit into the economic and artistic life of Pompeii? Did the best painters work in conjunction with one another? Did they paint only the important pictures in the best rooms and, if so, who painted the rest? Were the best houses the showplaces for these painters' work? If not, what was the function of these decorations in Pompeian life? L. Richardson, jr, has had a long and distinguished career writing about Roman art and architecture, particularly that of the companion town of Pompeii and its environs. In this newest work, he attributes many of the surviving wall decorations to particular painters. It is a catalog in the true sense, grouping the pictures by style and then by painter. Richardson describes the salient characteristics of a painter's work, and then inventories the pictures he attributes to that painter, together with cross-references to other catalogs and sources of good reproductions. ; 190 pages
