This copy also includes a collection of original drawings from two other artists<br /><br />Written by Jean Lorrain born Paul Duval and originally published in 1904 La Maison Philibert revolves around a Parisian brothel of the belle epoque. Although prostitution and debauchery was not an uncommon theme in fin de siecle literature Lorrain had his own reputation for being particularly outrageous in both his writings and his real life escapades. The erotic novel is here illustrated with 30 etchings with a suite of additional four states by Courbouleix. <br /><br />The second volume contains a large collection of drawings to illustrate the same work by two other artists. Carlo Farnetti 1892-1961 Neapolitan by birth moved to Paris where he illustrated works by Zola Baudelaire and Poe. He was later comissioned by Javal & Bordeaux to illustrate Les Cent Nouvelles but his drawings for La Maison Philibert were never published - making this collection of original drawings accordingly rare. <br /><br />André Dignimont a 'figure notable de Montmatre' was celebrated for perfectly capturing feminine beauty. Ties lacking front cover rubbed extremeties slightly worn.</p><p>Charles Gauthiot 1832-1905 was a French journalist and secretary-general of the Société de Geographie Commerciale de Paris founded in 1873 by M. Meurand E. Levasseur C. Gauthiot M. Tourasse B. Garnier M. Dietz-Mounin E. Berge F. de Lesseps M. Peghoux. No other copy found unique a fine specimen of the French craftsmanship of silk weaving with only minor traces of use. Some cover soiling wrinkling wear and small scale chips; contents sharp bright Very Good overall. Glossy covers; first and last few internal pages are on newsprint else all glossy. Rather spectacular full-page color illustrations by Leonnec Giris Vincent et al front cover "Est-ce vous le grand enfant qui veut.une poupee pour son jour de l'an" which I believe means roughly "Are you the Big Baby who wants.a doll for your birthday" featuring a winter-clad but nonetheless fetching young lady pointing at us and Giris' "Petite Secousse au Vieux Marcheur" on the rear cover. Mild nudity sporadically in these issues but quite soft. All of the full page efforst are eminently frame-able and at this time of a sensibility midway-evolved between nouveau and deco as is much of the uncredited b&w illustration. An original - and of course first and only edition - of the 12/29/1917 issue of this memorable and long-lived French weekly offering of very soft very artful light erotica. The captioned illustrations by the eminent luminaries named above are what what really "make" this issue as was generally the case through the era but cartoons serial fiction and around-town pieces nicely compliment those. Marbled edges and endpapers. Minor rubbing to extremities head of spine of Volume II expertly and almost invisibly repaired front hinge of Volume I cracked but sound. Minimal foxing and soiling. Small area of surface abrasion to upper blank margin of plate Artistes -6 facing page 160 in Volume II where it was once adhered to the facing page. Bookplate Bibliothèque de A. Vautrain on front pastedown of each volume. Collating 4 xxxii 380; 4 lxxx 364. Wood- engraved title vignette in each volume 212 wood-engraved plates 208 after Gavarni and four after Bertall with tissue guards and numerous wood-engraved head- and tail-pieces vignettes and initials. This copy with a duplicate of the plate facing in Volume I. Music. Overall an excellent copy.<br /> <br /> "The book appeared in part-issues at the rate of one or two a week between April of 1843 and December of 1845. The major attraction of Le diable à Paris resides in Gavarni's plates which are of even greater interest than the 320 wood engravings of his Oeuvres choisies 207. The engraving is superior for the most part and they are new conceptions not versions of his lithographs. He limits himself almost entirely to single figures or pairs evoked with his usual concentration and psychological subtlety. He had a free hand with his subjects since his designs are quite unrelated to Hetzel's text. As usual he arranged them as series some of which those devoted to writers and politicians for example are largely unprecedented in his previous repertory. He invaded Daumier's world with success in the fifteen plates of 'Bourgeois' exampled in the self-satisfied worthy reproduced II 328" Ray.<br /> <br /> Hiler 237. J. Hetzel unknown

Cohen-De Ricci also mentions that the plates in volume III are numbered so close to the bottom of the sheets that the numbers are present only when the sheets are entirely uncut as is the case here. 8vos. A beautifully illustrated and hand-colored volume. Pierce Egan 1772-1849 was a British journalist sportswriter and writer on popular culture best-knows work is Life in London first published in 1821. The book was adapted into the stage play Tom and Jerry or Life in London later that year and it became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances in London while at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. Egan turned to the Cruikshank brothers Robert and George for the illustrations. They produced 21 woodcuts and 36 lively and colorful plates to represent the range of characters and situations described in the book. The success of Life in London was so great that the artists could not color the engravings quickly enough for the demand. The book was adapted for the stage later that year and the play Tom and Jerry or Life in London became the first play to have a continuous run of 100 performances in London while at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. The book was reprinted in 1822 1823 1830 1841 1870 and 1904. Numerous imitations soon appeared namely Carey's Life in Paris Real Life in London Real Life in Ireland et al.
