First Edition in Book Form; originally a weekly periodical edited and written entirely by Charles Dickens from April 4 1840 - December 4 1841; Narrator Master Humphrey was a lonely man who lived in London. He keeps old manuscripts in an antique grandfather clock by the chimney-corner and decides to start a little club called Master Humphrey's Clock where the members including Mr. Pickwick himself have a penchant for telling stories. In the book several short tales are recounted followed by the novels 'The Old Curiosity Shop' which follows the life of the beautiful and virtuous Little Nell and her Grandfather and 'Barnaby Rudge' Dickens first effort at historical fiction set during London's non-Popery 'Gordon' Riots Protestant rallying against the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1778. The illustrations to Parts VIII-XII are unsigned but by Hablot K. Brown aka "Phiz." The woodcut on the upper wrapper is by Hablot K. Brown. Advertisements collate per Schwerdt save Part VI which lacks the Note of Lever's Martin and Part VII lacking the slip for The Belle of the Village. Publisher's original red-brown pictorial wrappers. Minimal restoration of spines to a few volumes tiny chip to fore- edge of Part I otherwise an excellent and quite lovely set. Chemised and housed in a red cloth clamshell case with black leather spine label lettered in gilt.<br /> <br /> "Although Surtees approached his publishers in July 1861 with the idea of bringing out 'Mr. Facey Romford' they preferred not to undertake the matter until Mr. Leech's services were definitely secured and there would be no questoin of such delays as had occurred in the illustrations of 'Handley Cross.' Leech promised however to being in January 1862 and the situation seemed sufficiently secure to set up the type but just at this time the artist held his first exhibition of oil paintings which proved so successful and diverting that the 'Facey Romford' illustrations were again postponed. Surtees in despair at last offered the book in August 1864 to The Field where is was refused. A sleepy young narrator bids goodnight to the Earth each feature of the snow-covered landscape imagined as part of the family: "Goodnight Papa Star / Goodnight Mama Moon / Bending your silver arms / down through the darkness." Leo and Diane Dillon won numerous awards over the course of their long career including back-to-back Caldecott Medals in 1976 and 1977 for Ashanti to Zulu and Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears the only consecutive medals given to date. They would win the 1992 Society Of Illustrators Gold Medal for the vibrant airbrush and watercolor images in Northern Lullaby. The publisher's poster reproduces their two-page spread of the tree spirits Auntie Willow and Auntie Birch "standing in long flannel gowns in the silence." A near-fine inscribed copy of a stunning book accompanied by a signed poster. Single volume measuring 11 x 10 inches: 26. Comprises a general preface describing the entire project by Dufart an introduction to this volume by Manuel 101 GORGEOUS FULL-PAGE COLOR-PRINTED STIPPLE-ENGRAVED PLATES OF MAMMALS IN EXOTIC LANDSCAPES usually two scenes per plate after Deseve and other artists and descriptive notes on each mammal depicted by Manuel. 30 pp. 101 plates 60 pp. Dedicated to Napoleon. Text printed on fine wove paper plates on very fine thick wove paper. After the appearance of this volume the project was suspended because the publishers could not find enough subscribers there is a list of the 24 who subscribed to this first volume on the back of the half-title. The reasons for this failure are obvious: each volume cost a staggering 60 francs not including the binding and the images of the animals although bright beautiful and charming are not particularly accurate. Large thick 8vo. BOUND IN CONTEMPORARY FULL CRIMSON MOROCCO WITH ELEGANT GILT DECORATION ON COVERS AND SPINE. All edges gilt. Light wear to extremities of binding but still very attractive. Internally bright. Two copies in NUC. Quérard La France littéraire V 497 doubts the very existence of this work: ".ne paraît avoir été que projeté car on n'en trouve mention nulle autre part que dans le vol. de M. Debray."
