1842144203London: John Arrowsmith 1842. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London John Arrowsmith Published 18 May 1842. A hand-coloured engraved map printed surface 402 × 551 mm external dimensions 446 × 591 mm cut into eight uniform panels mounted on linen as issued folding down to approximately 225 × 150 mm. When folded the two outside surfaces of linen are lined with plain purple textured cloth; a long sealed tear runs though the two top right-hand panels containing the printed title and a centimetre into the next-left panel but the only printed surface affected is the thin right-hand border: in spite of its length it is inoffensive and unobtrusive and may well be a production fault; in very good condition complete with the publisher's original slipcase in matching cloth lettered 'Wellington' in gilt on one thin side worn at the corners of the closed end and a little marked. John Arrowsmith 1790-1873 'was an important English cartographer especially for Australians. A member of a family of geographers his production focused on mapping British colonies around the world at a scale that surpassed that of any other contemporary map maker. Additionally he had access to the very latest despatches received at the Colonial Office and the British Admiralty which formed the source for many of his productions. His work covers the period 1832 to 1862'.
His lasting contribution is his 'London Atlas of Universal Geography' which went through at least eight editions between 1834 and 1858 Dorothy Prescott: 'Arrowsmith's Australian Maps' online resource.
We have previously sold uncut examples of this map on paper sourced from copies of the atlas. This cased example produced from the same plate used for the atlases shows the original allotments along the River Murray at Wellington and the upper entrance to Lake Alexandrina. This copy has three of these allotments additionally hand-coloured with initials added in black ink. They are blocks 8 blue FB 51 blue JB and 90 red FB. The two inset maps show the south-eastern portion of Australia and a 'Sketch of the Country between the Gulf of St. Vincent and the Great Bend of the River Murray shewing the Position of the Two Special Surveys of the Secondary Towns Association on the River Light'.
Tooley 115 b uncut version. François Magendie . the well-known French physiologist was in attendance at the meeting and immediately set out to perform his epoch-making experiments. This book is a detailed chronological history of Bell's experiments as well as those of his student and associate John Shaw 1792-1827 Alexander's brother. Shaw also reviews much of the relevant neurological research of Magendie and Herbert Mayo . The Bell-Magendie affair was one of the most acrimonious quarrels in medical history and loyal supporters will be found for either of the principals among medical historians. Shaw's arguments are persuasive giving priority to Bell for the discovery of the function of the anterior and posterior spinal roots. He presents some very convincing documentation and accuses Magendie of opportunism and downright dishonesty'.
The introduction to the booklet accompany Mayo's work has this to say on the matter: his book 'is remarkable in that it contains Mayo's account of his discovery of the functions of the Vth and VIIth cranial nerves and his report of the experiments which lead to his findings. Unfortunately publication of the work prompted a bitter and prolonged controversy with Mayo's former teacher Sir Charles Bell who had earlier investigated the subject and who contended with Mayo for honors in this discovery'. The bulk of the booklet is a detailed account by Dr Paul Cranefield into the three competing claims. Provenance: Professor Donald Simpson AO 1927-2018 eminent Australian neurosurgeon with his bookplate annotated with his purchase details: '9 July 2004 Nigel Phillips'. 3 items. Royal octavo 9¼x5½" in publisher's original green cloth spine lettered in gilt covers decorative blind stamped. First Edition.

In 1825 Edward Belcher accompanied Frederick William Beechey's expedition to the Pacific and Bering Strait as a surveyor. In 1836. he commanded a surveying ship on the north and west coasts of Africa and in the British seas. Belcher took up the work which Beechey had left unfinished on the Pacific coast of South America. He was on board the bomb vessel HMS Sulphur which was ordered to return to England in 1839 by the Trans-Pacific route. Belcher made various observations at a number of islands which he visited having been delayed by being dispatched to take part in the war in China in 1840. On 26 January 1841 the then Commander Belcher landed on Possession Point at the north shore Hong Kong Island and made the first British survey of Hong Kong harbor. After the war's end in 1842 he reached home and for his services was made a Knight Bachelor in the following year. He was then engaged in HMS Samarang in surveying work in the East Indies the Philippines Geomun-do Port Hamilton and other places until 1847. In 1852 Belcher led the last and largest Admiralty expedition to rescue Sir John Franklin. He was also to look for his former surveying officer in Hong Kong Richard Collinson and Robert McClure whose ships had not been seen after entering the Bering Strait. He did a great deal of sledge exploration rescued McClure and abandoned four of his five ships in the ice. He had five ships: Assistance Belcher Resolute Henry Kellett second mate George Nares the steam tenders PioneerSherard Osborn and Intrepid Leopold McClintock and the depot ship North Star William Pullen. Belcher and one tender were to enter Wellington Channel where Franklin was thought to be while Kellett was to go west to Melville Island and look for Collinson and McClure. North Star was to stay at Beechey Island as a supply base. He left the Nore in April 1850. By early winter Assistanceand Pioneer were frozen in at Northumberland Sound to the north of Wellington Channel while Resolute and Intrepid were frozen in off Melville Island Arctic—the first ships this far west since William Edward Parry in 1819. A great deal of exploration was done by man-hauled sledges. In April 1853 Leopold McClintock and others left the Resolute on sledges and returned 105 days later having covered 1400 miles and discovered Prince Patrick Island. Another party went west and discovered Robert McClure whose ship was frozen in at Mercy Bay. Belcher went north by sledge and found a channel at the northern tip of Devon Island hinting that Franklin might have used it to escape to Baffin Bay. When the ice broke up that summer he pushed his ships up Wellington Channel and became trapped again. By February 1854 Belcher was becoming increasingly worried about the safety of his ships and men. In April he ordered Kellett to abandon his ships and return by sledge to North Star. Belcher abandoned his two ships in late July. Aided by two ships that showed up at Beechey Island Phoenix and Breadalbane the whole party returned to England. Belcher went through a court martial which was automatic for any captain who had lost a ship. He was exonerated but his sword was returned to him 'without observation'. He never again received an active command. Curiously Resolute broke free of the ice and drifted all the way to Davis Strait where it was picked up by an American whaler.

Condition:

Some staining and wear to covers spines a bit faded ends chipped and worn rear joint of Vol. I with chipping and loss; hinges repaired at endpapers some light foxing and occasional mostly marginal damp staining within the three folding maps which should be loose in a pocket not present; overall good uncommon in the original cloth. 1931194831931. Winsloe Christa. Mädchen in Uniform 1931 stands among the earliest narrative films to portray romantic attachment between women and remains a foundational work in the history of LGBTQ cinema. Written by Christa Winsloe and directed by Leontine Sagan with production support from Carl Froelich the German film centers on a girls' boarding school where emotional bonds between students and a female teacher challenge the rigid discipline of the institution. Actress Hertha Thiele played the central student role and her performance became closely associated with the film's exploration of female same sex desire and youthful rebellion within an authoritarian educational environment. The surviving publicity photographs in this archive preserve visual documentation of Thiele's portrayal of the character whose emotional intensity helped make the film internationally recognized.

Archive of six items associated with Mädchen in Uniform. Four photographic postcards measuring approximately 3.5 x 5.5 inches depict portraits of actress Hertha Thiele in costume from the film presenting her in uniform with direct or contemplative gazes toward the camera. One small black and white photograph measuring approximately 1 x 2 inches also depicts Thiele. The archive additionally includes a German pamphlet measuring approximately 6 x 9 inches promoting another Thiele film titled Das Erste Recht des Kindes The First Right of the Child. The postcards functioned as publicity images circulated during the early distribution of the film and emphasize Thiele's central role in the production.

Mädchen in Uniform achieved international attention upon its release and became known for its frank portrayal of emotional intimacy between female characters during a period when cinematic depictions of homosexuality were rare. The film circulated widely outside Germany but also faced censorship concerns in some regions due to its subject matter. After the rise of the Nazi regime the film was banned in Germany as culturally undesirable and several individuals associated with the production faced persecution due to Jewish identity or opposition to the regime. Many prints were reportedly destroyed during this period contributing to the film's later reputation as a landmark work preserved despite political repression. Hertha Thiele herself declined participation in Nazi propaganda films and maintained distance from the regime's cultural apparatus. Four photographic postcards one small photograph and one German film pamphlet. Minor edge wear consistent with early twentieth century photographic ephemera. Overall condition very good. unknown

1787List2432Maryland 1787. One Volume. “Arithmetic Book.†Brewer Joseph Newton. Maryland: June 17 1786 - April 211789 or after. Folio half calf bdg contemporary or old boards; scuffed and chipped and bumped later rebacking. 80 folio sheets of which 15 blank with seated Brittania watermarks. 135 pages mss text in brown ink original manuscript pagination recto-verso sgd and dated on front pastedown; internally toned some closed tears. Near Fine. This manuscript journal comprises an 18th-century American student’s mathematics course from 1786 - 1789. The author Joseph Brewer signs and dates the journal on the front pastedown but he never mentions his hometown or his parentage. It is only in the last exercises of 1789 that he reveals himself more fully as “Joseph Newton Brewer†and further firmer internal evidence regarding this identity is wanting. However inasmuch as he was ostensibly a student in his mid-teens at the time of composition and makes frequent reference to Maryland in numerous exercises in his book it is likely that he was Joseph Nathaniel Newton Brewer January 10 1771 - January 8 1841 of Edgewater Anne Arundel MD. Marriage and birth certificates found among online genealogical corpora do corroborate this.

Joseph Brewer’s “Arithmetic Book†is noteworthy among other extant 18th-century curricular manuscripts because it showcases a variety of word problems all of which relate explicitly to period themes. There are expected school subjects such as fractions and decimals and practice tables but most of Brewer’s assignments are more practical in scope. They treat topics of an especially economic even mercantile nature including problems of currency conversion; partnership exchange and barter; loss and gain; legacies and wills; land and surveying.

The commodities Brewer emphasizes his math exercises are also of interest as they
emphasize in most instances prestige goods and other expensive imports e.g. beer rum
chocolate gold dust coffee and tobacco. He writes in one example “Three merchants A. B. & C. freight a ship with 248 tons of wine†before extreme weather causes them to throw much of it overboard necessitating calculations. In another three men spend a guinea at a tavern each consuming varied amounts. The persons described in the word problems are also worthy of further study as in one case where various farm personnel are featured: “one man three women and one boy made a crop of 1700 pounds of tobacco.†p14. Brewer’s journal also contains several practice exercises in letter-writing as to foreign traders p93. The author of the “Arithmetic Book†seems to have enjoyed this work and there are many whimsical flourishes in his handwriting and a few occasional doodles. Most surprising however is Brewer’s decision to conclude his journal with a composite psalmic coda:

“Oh God who didst command the light to shine out of darkness / speak but the word and light shall dart into my soul at once / when thou my lips and my mouth shall show forth my / praise shall burst out into a chearful sic song†

Overall an interesting relic of education during the years following the Revolution which should be of interest to scholars of early American education due to its detail and thematic content. unknown

For a time his patron was Cardinal Giulio de' Medici and he mocked Popes and would be popes but in time he settled in Venice - the Anti-Rome. Ariosto called him "the scourge of Princes". He is remembered most for his satires and his letters which detail conversations with both the great names of the day as well as regular folk both women and men. His ability to manipulate the reader of his letters - which were carefully chosen and probably always meant for publication - by constructing a compelling narrative with himself as central protagonist - changed epistolary collections forever. 1627032988London: Adam Islip 1627 A fair copy of the extremely scarce '2nd impression' of Edward Grimeston's Generall Historie of the Netherlands. Grimeston was known as prolific translator and the first edition of the Historie was largely taken from J F Le Petit's 'La Grand Chronique Ancienne et Moderne de Hollande'. It was a fairly faithful translation but he researched the subject adding text on the years 1601-1608 using sources such as Emanuel Demetrius. It was very popular but he was criticised for not including more on the efforts and achievements of the English troops in Flanders. In his address at the beginning of the 2nd 1627 edition he states that he did in 1608 'observe my Authors. They were men borne in those countries who would arrogate as much as might be to their own Nation'. In the new edition he 'had conference with some of the great Commanders and Captaines' from the English side and endeavoured to redress the balance. He wanted to also bring the edition up to date but apparently his printers did not allow it so this work was done by William Crosse. The second edition has fewer engravings 29 and the pagination has numerous errors presumably testament to all the revisions and additions. This copy is contemporary full leather which was rebacked at some point to preserve some of the spine. The repair was not particularly high quality and there is some old tape at the internal spine joints. The boards themselves are generally clean with some scuffing. There is a lot of repair to corners now flaking and the bottom corner of the back board is soft. The spine remnants are quite dry and flaky. Internally there is an old note at the front endpaper repeated on the initial blank which also has an elaborate signature of William Forde of Manchester 1800. The note states that the book is rare and that he has found an entry in White's Catalogue for it in 1801 at a cost of 18/-. Contents with engraved title - with signatures to top; dedication 2pp; Translator's preface 2pp; text pp 1-1262 with continuation by Crosse pp 1276-1588 with 29 three quarter page engravings Finis; Index 13pp Finis. The pagination is all over the place eg pp 1262 - blank - 1276 where the Continuation starts. Please enquire if you would like to see the full list. All the ties work bar one - 1266-1249 - but this is because the tie is wrong - the text is fine. The contents are generally clean with occasional marking and the odd edge tear and are complete. Elaborate head and tailpieces and initial capitals. The paper is lightly toned and quite light in weight. The initial leaves through to p 1 are very fragile with some loss at the edges. There is light persistent staining at the top margin which is not particularly noticeable until the end of the work where the stain is at the top corner which becomes quite fragile. There is sporadic slight worming in the bottom corner - and occasional exploits elsewhere - but away from the text. There is the occasional burn hole edge tear corner margin loss - please enquire if you would like to see the full list. Adam Islip hardcover
