1594019300Paris: Chez Abel L'Angelier 1594. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 8vo 10. X 16cm. Two vols bound in one: title page to both vols both with engraved vignettes and both dated 1594; several engraved headpieces; pp. viii 1-342; ii 343 - 628 26 Blasii Monluci Franciae Mareschalli Tumulus. 17th c. binding of full calf with 5 raised bands to the boards with gilt decroation between and burgundy title label; marbled end papers tihe front end paper with the engraved bookplate of the Earl of Roden all edges tinted red. Binding good and strong with some general wear and rubbing leather chipped to the head/tail of the spine and rubbed through to the boards to the bottom edges partially to the front fore-edge and the corners joints with partial cracks at the head/tail but the binding remains firm and the boards strongly attached. Contents generally very good clean and complete with a few small faults: the title page to vol. I a little worn and marked with the lower corner tip missing but not affecting any lettering a few pages very lightly stained; pp. 18-32 with a tear/chip at the base of the gutter with slight loss of a few letters; but lost letters replaced in contemporary autograph this may have been a binding fault as these pages are not quite straight with a few marginal notes slightly shaved. Generally margins are very good with marginal notes present slight worming to the head of pages 590-620 slightly affecting running title only top corners/top foreedge of pages 113-116 singed slightly affecting a couple of marginal notes. A very good copy of this very early reprint: the first edition was published 2 years earlier and was soon coined the "soldiers' bible". For extra information please do not hesitate to contact us. 1672032862London: Matthew Walbancke. Matthew Walbancke and Henry Twyford 1672 A very good copy in largely contemporary binding. In two parts with separate title pages dated 1647 and 1651 respectively. It is suggested that John Selden 1584-1654 is the true author of the work which was then edited by Nathaniel Bacon - whose name is on the title to the Continuation. However this is still a matter of argument. The work was produced originally as the Civil War came to its close and the Commonwealth was established and is written against the royal prerogative. A 'secret' or 'private' edition was produced in 1672 after the restoration of the monarchy. It is stated that 750 copies were produced and many were burnt or otherwise destroyed. The edition has the 2 works in one is dated as for the 1647/51 edition and there are variants of it. Detailed study Joseph A Dane University of Chicago Press suggests that the remnants of 1672 copies were put back together and sections reprinted later. This copy is clearly a 1672 'secret' edition of which parts are likely to be later printings. According to ESTC this copy has the Title page in setting A; Quires B-C are in setting 2; and Quire D in setting b. The binding is full calf with contemporary boards with blind ruled lines and new matching spine with raised bands and title label. Endpapers have been retained with repair and there are some ink numerals to the front and a latin quotation with initials to the verso of the fep. Contents: title 1647; To Consideration 2pp; Contents listing 4pp; Prologue 4 pp; text pp 1-323 Finis; Table 11pp; Finis; Title 1651; contents 2pp; Preface 20pp; text pp 1-307; table 8pp; Finis. All with decorative headpieces. The paper is lightly toned particularly to edges but the copy is very clean with crisp paper. Book size 20 cm x 15 cm Matthew Walbancke. The papers were published at the same time in German both here in Annalen and in Schweiger's Journal and in French. By running many hundreds of analysis of chemical compounds he gave so many examples of the law of definite proportions that the world of chemistry could no longer doubt its validity and in so doing he gave experimental evidence to the atomic theory. He hereby laid a solid fundation for the further development of chemistry.According to Söderbaum Jac. Berzelius 2 p.12 "It was a giant work one of the most importent in the history of chemistry which was here presented. One is even more impressed when one remembers that it was a pioneer undertaking in every sense of the term. Analytic and synthetic methods existed before Berzelius' time to be sure but there were no precise methods of the sort which he required. They all had to be elaborated at the cost of time and labour."J. Erik Jorpes "Jac. Berzelius" p.45."In general Berzelius's efforts were directed toward the consolidation and extension of the atomic theory. He improved chemical analysis and determined the composition of a large number of compounds thus verifying the laws of constant and multiple proportions and furnishing the most accurate equivalent weights then available. By ingenious methods he arrived at the correct atomic composition of most common substances and thus was enabled to draw up in 1826 a table of atomic weights very nearly identical with the modern one."Leicester & Klicktein "A Source Book in Chemistry" p. 258.Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1810-20 C. unknown

There was published as late as 1854 in Madrid an improved and richly illustrated edition continued up to that year. The work first appeared as "Historiæ de rebus Hispaniæ libri XX. Toleti typis P. Roderici 1592". A later edition of the compiler himself carried on still further is "De rebus Hispaniæ libri XXX" published at Mainz in 160 the item offered. 19093160Bangor NY 1909. Manuscript ledger containing seventeen years of financial information for the women's philanthropic group. Comprised of 77 handwritten pages with 2 sheets 4 pages inserted at front. Bound in quarter cloth over marbled card measuring 6 x 7 inches. Cloth spine has largely perished; text block almost fully disbound but held together by remnants. Boards generally rubbed with loss of bottom front corner. Internally legible and detailed in a variety of hands.

Founded in New York in 1886 The International Order of the King's Daughters was an interdenominational women's organization whose mission was to "represent faith hope and service to others" IOKD. Initially begun by ten women from Episcopal Methodist and Presbyterian churches the members hoped to cross boundaries in their small communities in order to improve life for all. Their official motto reflected this: "Look up and not down Look forward and not back Look out and not in And lend a hand" IOKD. Member branches were encouraged to choose their own community missions serving where they saw the most need locally. Within a year the organization had spread across the east coast with hundreds of chapters and over 50000 members; it remained a predominantly women's group although some branches granted membership to men beginning in 1891. The present branch was located in Bangor New York near the Canadian border. In a town that had been founded not even a century before in 1806 the women of the Kings Daughters of Bangor had an opportunity to help meet key needs for their municipality. In the almost two decades' worth of notes in this ledger researchers can traces how dues and fundraising helped the entirely-women group contributed books and funds to the creation of a public library; assisted in providing clothes for the needy; and ran two key projects which were the maintenance of the local cemetery and the "old ladies home" a housing space for widowed single and other in-need women as they aged without families.

A research-rich ledger with opportunities to study in fields including but not limited to rural women's social history the role of women's organizations in the founding of towns interdenominational religious organizations women's religious groups historical fundraising the formation of local libraries and educational programs women in business and philanthropy genealogy and paleography. unknown

First printed edition of the "Excerpta Peiresciana" manuscript or "De Virtutuibus et Vitiis" part of a large Byzantine anthology of excerpts which were gathered from earlier Greek historical works and compiled under the direction of the emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus 905-959 c.e. The collection was arranged in 53 sections 4 of which are extant - 1. "De Legationibus" 2. "De Virtutibus et Vitiis" 3. "De Sententiis" 4. "De Insidiis." In 1582 Fulvius Ursini published "De Legationibus." Additions were later published by Hoeschel 1603. See Sandy's p.397. In 1634 Henri de Valesius Valois1603-1676 a respected Greek scholar and translator published "De Virtutibus et Vitiis" here listed from a Cyprus manuscript in the possession of M. Peiresc Excerpta Peiresciana. The excerpts include selections from Polybius Diodorus Siculus Nicolas Damascene Dionysius Halicarnassus Appianus and John of Antioch. The excerpts from Polybius's "History" are considered to be the most important as they form an integral part of what we know about the fragmentary sections of this work.
