23256Boudoir card 5" x 8" albumen photo on the mound of "Richardson Artist" showing a team of horses pulling a large model factory building with the words "Glenwood Mills Dress Silks" on the roof. Not further identified but most likely the Glenwood Mills in Easthampton Massachusetts which according to an account in the Fitchburg Sentinel began manufacturing dress silks in August 1881. We have been unable to locate an image of that factory for comparison likely because it burned to the ground in 1887. Several flags are mounted on the building suggesting it may have been part of an Independence Day parade. In any case it surely would have been an attention-grabbing form of advertising. Mount is chipped at one corner and rubbed at the others; image very good. . unknown
24011Collection of 179 snapshots documenting flood and erosion control projects on levees and farmland in the Illinois and Mississippi River watersheds in the 1920s and 1930s including the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps CCC in Illinois. The collection was assembled by Leon C. Craig a civil engineer who was employed by the State of Illinois Division of Waterways in the 1920s and served as a project supervisor at the Tuscola Illinois CCC camp in the mid-to-late 1930s. Craig was involved in a number of projects relating to flood prevention and mitigation and the promotion sustainable agriculture through better drainage systems. Several interesting early images show flooded rivers overflowing their banks and flooded towns; most document construction work levees culverts and other drainage infrastructure and topography relating to waterways as well as the grounds and men of the Tuscola CCC camp. Nearly all of the photos are in very good condition; a few have creasing or small chips. While there are enough captions on the versos to identify the compiler and some of the locations most are uncaptioned. Size ranges from 2.75" x 4.5" to 4" x 6". . unknown
22673Softcover. Very good. Softcover student notebook 8.25 x 6 inches containing 51 b/w photographs 2.5" x 3.5" mounted on graph paper leaves most with handwritten captions in Vietnamese. Dated 1972 on the front cover with additional handwritten titles or notes we have been unable to decipher. Two items stapled together are laid into the notebook both in French on the letterhead of the Indochina Operational Group of the Red Cross. A cover letter addressed to the National Societies of the Red Cross dated March 5 1973 reads roughly "It gives us great pleasure to send you the first set of photographs of the Red Cross in the Republic of Vietnam reported by M. Olaf Stroh during his recent trip to Hanoi and Haphong" and requests feedback. The attached sheet a photocopy provides a list of eight Activities of the Red Cross in Vietnam shown in "Series 4" of the photographs. These two items do not appear to have a direct relationship to the photo album i.e. these are not the photographs mentioned in the correspondence but both do relate to French Red Cross activities in Vietnam. The photographs show a variety of scenes relating to displaced people and relief efforts in South Vietnam. There are images of landscapes destroyed by the war trucks piled high with possessions people waiting in lines and crowds at distribution points for food and supplies and makeshift refugee camps with living spaces made from tarps poles and sheet metal. Red Cross vehicles appear in several photographs as do a pair of men who are likely representatives of the organization. A compelling view of the impact of the war on ordinary people's lives. unknown
1914011883Britt Iowa 1914. Photographic Image. Good. No Binding. Second grade class photo Britt Hancock County Iowa 1914. Antique photograph mounted on card stock. Image measures 5 X 7 inches with card mount 7 X 9 inches. The upper-left corner was torn away not affecting the photograph and is held in place with tape on the back. Waviness to the card stock and some minor corner wear. Verso is blank except for the name "Gordon" penciled in at the upper-right corner affected by tear and has some minor discoloration spots. The boy on the front row with the sign displayed it upside down to the photographer see scans. Interestingly all the girls in the class are positioned on the back row with their teacher separated from the boys on the two front rows. One teacher and 36 students are shown in the photo-23 boys and 13 girls. We found a list of teachers for the Britt School 1914-1915 on a genealogy web site so the teacher shown in the photo could have been Bessie Matson Jessie Ross Millie Anderson Lydia Burgardt Marie Boutilier or Winnifred Alridge. Fun fact about Britt Iowa: It is home to the National Hobo Convention since 1900 and the Hobo Museum. unknown

20999Japan Hydrogen Industry Co Ltd. Onahama Fukushima Prefecture Japan 1947. Cloth album 12 x 8.5 inches containing 33 silver gelatin photographs mounted to rectos only with printed captions in English and Japanese on facing pages. Very good. In the aftermath of World War II the Allied powers recognized the importance of stabilizing the Japanese economy as part of a larger effort to prevent Japan's remilitarization and stave off the spread of communism. With the assistance of foreign aid the Japanese government invested heavily in strengthening its industrial and manufacturing capacity. Economic development efforts in the coal-producing region of Fukushima Prefecture centered on the construction of chemical factories and related infrastructure. The Japan Hydrogen Industry Company also known as Nihon Suiso Company which had been founded in the port city of Onahama in 1937 became the core of the industrialization effort in the region after the war. This album produced in 1947 was likely used in an effort to attract American investment. The company was involved in the gasification of pulverized coal producing—depending on the exact process—coal gas water gas or syngas all combustible gases used for municipal lighting and heating prior to the large-scale production of natural gas as well as the production of ammonium sulfate and methanol. The album shows the plant's coke room; gas generators compressors and storage tanks; carbon monoxide converters; pumps for moving chemicals in solution; centrifuges; acid cooling process; ammonium sulphate storage room; and several parts of the methyl alcohol plant boiler turbo generators distiller machine shop storage drums. There is also a view of the entire seaside factory and one of the company's business offices. Over the next few decades Fukushima Prefecture underwent significant industrial development and became Japan's largest energy-supplying region. Whether this album made a specific contribution to that growth by garnering investment we do not know. But it is an interesting artifact of the early stages of the recovery that would become known as the Japanese Economic Miracle. unknown

021224No Place: No publisher. Unbound. Very Good. 8 by 10 inch glossy photos. No publisher place or date. The photographs are loosely contained in a manila folder with the name of Colonel L.B. de Long typed on it. Affixed to the interior is a copy of a letter addressed to someone working for an insurance company dated September 9 1952. This letter suggests meeting a John Mead and Colonel L.B. deLong who apparently handled "lots of interesting towage and construction projects in Alaska Greenland etc." The photographs are primarily shots of the pier that would make the Port of Thule being constructed depicting metal pipes platforms etc. with some icebergs visible as well as Dundas Mountain in the background. One shot depicts two former Navy vessels which may have been used as temporary housing for workers. They are the USNS General Stuart Heintzelman and the USNS General A W Greely. One photo depicts a ship moored and another depicts a ship just offshore. Pituffik Space Base Thule Air Base was originally built in 1951 and is the northernmost US military installation. It has gained more interest recently due to a US president's inane obsession with Greenland. The website icyseas . org indicates that the Port of Thule is the northernmost deep water port in the world and was constructed in three weeks. It was meant to be a temporary port but is still in use today. It also appears from that website that the pier depicted in these photos is sometimes referred to as the deLong Pier. These are from an executive of a very large international insurance firm name of owner and firm withheld for privacy. The owner was a highly placed executive in an insurance company and travelled throughout the world extensively. They were active in politics through donations and fundraising and it appears their family was friendly with the Roosevelts especially Eleanor Roosevelt. The previous owner's work for the insurance company led them to meet with various heads of state worldwide including US government officials. Some of the people associated with this firm were also involved in World War II activities including financing the Flying Tigers in China as well as work for the OSS using knowledge gained from insurance work. While we have not found any direct connection to intelligence work by this owner their ties to those who did are strong. Photos in VERY GOOD condition with minor toning and general curling.
