012867Postcard. Very Good. No Binding. Approximately 3.5 X 5.5 inches. Divided back with ARTURA stamp box circa 1910-1924. Clean sharp image no tears creases or marks. The back shows what appears to be adhesive shadows at the corners but there is no sticky residue-just the faded tan marks. The ball players in the image wear different caps but are otherwise dressed the same. The player on the right holds a catcher's mitt and face mask. There is a glove on the ground next to the ball player on the left. A clue to identifying the team and location is the letters NH on the upper sleeve of the jacket. There is pencil notation on the back of the postcard indicating University of New Hampshire which would have been New Hampshire College for the time estimate of this postcard. The Clement Moran Photo Collection at the University of New Hampshire Scholars Repository includes a photograph of the 1920 team which features the same diamond-shaped insignia with the letters NH on the upper sleeves as well as some of the players wearing similar double-breasted jackets. There are minor differences in the details of the uniforms in the postcard image but enough similarity to confirm the team is indeed New Hampshire College and a bit earlier than 1920. The uniforms may very well have been produced by Draper-Maynard D&M based in Plymouth New Hampshire a short distance from the college in Durham. They specialized in regional institutional orders with custom embroidery but marketed to the Major Leagues also Babe Ruth being an example of a loyal customer when he played for the Boston Red Sox. . unknown
