B&W Illustrations; World War I Scrapbook 13" x10" approx with 48 pages from an instructor at the Second Aviation Instruction Center at Tours France 1918. <P> The scrapbook was the property of and photographed by James FFred Chappell who is best known as one of the early photographers at the Lick Observatory and for whom the Chappell Crater on the Moon is named. <P> The scrapbook includes 48 pages of various sized photographs taken by Chappell starting with photographs of shipboard activities on the transport from the US to Tours France candid photos of France and the French rural folk on their travel from the coast to Tours and then to the compound of 2nd AIC Second Aviation Instruction Center which was founded by the French at the Tours Aerodrome and then given over for the use of the United States as a place for instructors in aerial observation and aerial gunnery to teach students. <P> James F. Chappell became an instructor in Aerial Observation -- and ironically because the airplanes were crashing so often and had so many injuries and fatalities Chappell and other instructors were forbidden from flying into combat to keep from having excessive losses in the instructor corps. <P> The latter half of the scrapbook includes many photographs of different styles of airplanes both whole and in pieces the ambulance crew fire brigade the camera guns and aerial photographs and sundry accoutrement dealing with aerial photography gunnery or observation. There are several rank advancement tickets small souvenirs and occasional newspaper clippings associated with the school. <P>Chappell graduated as one of the first classmen of the U. S. Army Aerial Photography class held at Cornell University in Ithaca NY. <P> In all 278 photographs plus other ephemera regarding Chappell's tour of duty starting from his transport in the US to the fields of Tours France. <P> This scrapbook holds an amazing amount of visual information regarding the early days of the Army Air Corps which became the United States Air Force in 1947. . 194114713England 1941. Very Good. Substantial collection of original amateur artwork and fashion plates dated 1941 to 1945 by a young woman named Gladys Warren almost all pieces signed "G. Warren" "G.W." or "Gladys Warren". The collection consists of nine large format watercolors 56x38cm.; one small format watercolor 32.5x23; four large format pencil sketches 56x38cm.; and twelve small format pencil sketches 33.5x19cm. totaling twenty-six 26 individual pieces. Some dust soil and minor wear from handling watercolors not examined out of individual shrink wrap. A Very Good or better collection overall.<br /> <br /> Collection of drawings and watercolors almost exclusively depicting women in the latest fashions or in uniform. The range of the large format watercolors indicate that this was possibly a burgeoning professional dossier including examples of day wear sleep wear evening wear and swim wear. The large format pencil drawings include two historic fashion illustrations the only titled image in the group is "Madeira 1884" and one nude study. <br /> <br /> Of special note however is the series of twelve small pencil sketches all accomplished on the versos of what appear to be mimeographed World War II aircraft maintenance reports. Indeed the October 28 1941 "London Gazette" lists a Gladys Florence Warren among the members of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force WAAF though we find little else to pinpoint the artist. With the dearth of ready paper experienced during World War II perhaps Warren filched these leaves on which to practice her art Most of these sketches depict attractive women either seen in close-up or as usual modeling the latest uniforms and fashions while the verso details the assemblage or maintenance of engine covers handbrakes or a "carburettor." <br /> <br /> A pleasing survival of the English home front juxtaposing fashion femininity and aircraft mechanics. unknown

Bookplate of A.J. Cox to front pastedown. <br /> <br /> Really a nicely executed and elaborate binding of this text which relates some of the events leading up to the Spanish American War of 1898. Alfred J. Cox was a Chicago master book binder and collector and we would guess this book from a Chicago publisher was perhaps bound by Cox himself. It is listed in Catalogue of the Sumptuous 'Attic' Library of the late Alfred J.Cox which was sold at auction by the American Art Association in New York 1918. This title along with several others from the series by Latimer are listed as bound in full levant morocco in various colors #608. A nice example of American fine binding at the turn of the century. It is part of the "Mutanabbi Street Starts Here" project which drew on broadside contributions from a variety of printers to commemorate the 2007 bombing of the historic book market in Baghdad.OCLC notes one copy at Indiana University and we find copies in two locations at the University of Washington. The photographer is unidentified but the prints are of professional quality and capture close-up scenes of crowds carrying banners and placards opposing military involvement in the Middle East and directly attacking President George H.W. Bush. One placard calls for Bush's impeachment accusing him of ".creating the Gulf War to Cover Up His High Crimes and Misdemeanors;" another appears to read "Liar Liar We Will Set Your Ass on Fire." <br /> <br /> Several images suggest a New York likely Manhattan locale: one poster connects the marcher to SUNY Old Westbury on Long Island; several placards bear the imprint of the National Coalition to Stop U.S. Intervention in the Middle East including a New York City phone number. <br /> <br /> Though the precise date is obviously uncertain the event captured here is plausibly the October 20 1990 nationwide protest against Operation Desert Storm; rallies took place in several cities simultaneously but New York's was by far the largest as some 15000 protesters gathered at Columbus Circle and marched to Times Square. In general opposition to the first Gulf War was rather muted but significant demostrations did take place in October 1990 and January 1991 as well as a less well-attended counter-protest on the day of the Desert Storm victory parade June 8th 1991. unknown
138172Very Good. An irregular piece of weathered plywood inscribed as above maximum dimensions 45 × 102 mm mounted on card behind glass in a modern wooden frame external dimensions 150 × 200 mm. As found now preserved and displayed to advantage; overall in excellent condition. Supporting documentation includes a lengthy extract from 'Flying Fury' 1918 by James Thomas Byford McCudden VC DSO and bar MC and bar MM and Croix de Guerre 1895-1918 describing his attack on an LVG C.VI a two-seater German reconnaissance and artillery-spotting aircraft on 17 October 1917 over Vlamertinghe . the very machine from which this relic was souvenired. <p>'I followed the wreckage down till the Hun crashed and then landed alongside on some good stubble in order to put a guard on the Hun. <p>I left my engine ticking over while I went to look at the Hun and I found two groups of Australian infantry. I pushed my way into the middle of the first group and found that the attraction was the observer who had fallen from the machine at about 5000 feet. He was a huge man named Ernst Hadrich and seeing that he was dead I went over to the other group of men about a hundred yards away and here found the remains of the machine and the pilot. <p>Everything of value in the way of souvenirs on the machine had already gone for although I landed a very short time after the Hun came down the Tommies had already taken what was worth taking and the way they behaved was not very edifying from the disciplined point of view in which I had always been brought up'. <p>An evocative souvenir and a sobering account. unknown
115317The gelatin silver stereophotographs uniform external dimensions approximately 57 × 125 mm are unmounted as issued; all have slight longitudinal curvature possibly as issued; apart from a few slightly rubbed corners they are in uniformly fine condition. The photographs are numbered and captioned in the space between the two images; this collection comprises an unbroken run of 100 from '2597. Sentinelles avancées derrière un talus' to '2696. Pêche à la ligne'. There are numerous scenes depicting the misery of life in the trenches especially when flooded; other main themes include the bodies of German soldiers artillery batteries columns of infantry on the move towns and villages devastated by artillery fire pastimes in the trenches and military infrastructure. <p>Most appear to have been taken around Maricourt on the Somme near Péronne possibly in 1916 and possibly by the Section photographique de l'armée SPA. This Army Photographic Section was created in April 1915 with the aim of documenting the war and producing images to counter German propaganda. A number of its photographers were equipped with stereoscopic cameras most commonly using 6 × 13 cm negatives. Smaller than the traditional tripod-mounted cameras the compact stereoscopic camera allowed the photographer to move freely across the battlefield Ministère des armées website. The format and subject matter of these images would seem to support attribution to this unit. unknown
101932Very Good. Backing cards generally slightly tanned; a couple of tiny indentations; overall in excellent condition. Two of the portraits are dated France July 1917 and London October 1918; one of the others is credited to an English photographer; the fourth one was almost certainly taken while Dixon was on active service. They give a graphic portrayal of the impact the war has had on him. This is reinforced by the lengthy message of 26 July 1917 written on one verso; it commences 'Just a Photo to let you see I am still alive & ducking. We are out for a spell once again getting ready for another stunt I guess'. 4 items. unknown

The covers are lightly worn and a little marked with a long split to the spine; the contents are in excellent condition. The 'REFERENCE' lists: German Trenches; German Shell Hole Defences; German Splinter Proof Shell Holes; Main C. Ts.; British Line; Confirmed Batteries; Centres of Activity; Dugouts; Concrete not less than 2 inches; T.M.; T.M. Active; Post; MG; Dump; Roads much used; Main Tracks; Other. Included on the map are 'Suspected Wireless Installation' and 'Possible Telephone Exchange'. A rectangular section is marked 'FOR LOG TARGETS SEE CRATER MAP NO. 1'. Windy Corner was located to the north-west of Cuinchy on what was known as Westminster Bridge Road and featured a house that was used as a battalion HQ and dressing station. It is now the site of the Guards Cemetery which was begun in 1915 by the Second Division and was mostly used by the 4th Guards Brigade. The area was well-known to Robert Graves who was stationed there several times with the Royal Welch Fusiliers. Of the neighbouring town he writes in 'Goodbye to All That': 'Cuinchy bred rats. They came up from the canal fed on the plentiful corpses and multiplied exceedingly. While I stayed here with the Welsh a new officer joined the company . When he turned in that night he heard a scuffling shone his torch on the bed and found two rats on his blanket tussling for the possession of a severed hand.' FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK ON THE FIRST WORLD WAR AND AMERICA'S ROLE IN THE CONFLICT. As Secretary of War Baker presided over the American military participation in the First World War in 1917 and 1918 including the creation of a nationwide military draft. Baker selected Gen. John J. Pershing to head the American Expeditionary Forces. At Baker's insistence Wilson made the American forces an independent fighting partner of the Allies against the Central Powers rather than letting American troops be used to replenish British and French forces as those nations advised.<br> On December 15 1917 a War Council was formed as distinct from the Council of National Defense consisting of the Secretary of War his Assistant the Chief of Staff of the United States Army the Quartermaster General of the United States Army the Chief of Ordnance and possibly others.16 The War Council was to oversee and coordinate all matters of supply and to plan for the effective use of the military power of the nation. <br> At the 1924 Democratic National Convention he delivered a speech that was the highlight of the convention "political oratory at its peak" according to an exhaustive account of the convention: "According to reporters men and women everywhere burst into tears. It was a tour de force emotional and bordering on hysteria."<br> "On fields of Europe I closed the eyes of soldiers in American uniforms who were dying . and oh they were so superb and splendid: never a complaint; never a regret; willing to go if only two things might be: One that mother might know that they died bravely and the other that somebody would pick up their sacrifice and build on earth a permanent temple of peace. .<br><br> And I swore an obligation to the dead that in season and out by day and by night in church in political meeting in the market-place I intended to lift up my voice always and ever until their sacrifice were really perfected. .<br><br> I served Woodrow Wilson for five years. He is standing at the throne of God whose approval he won and has received. As he looks down from there I say to him: "I did my best. I am doing it now. You are still the captain of my soul. I feel your spirit here palpably about me." These traditional Speech Day lists of successes gained and prizes awarded are overshadowed by the lengthy Honour Roll of Old Collegians 'who were sent overseas or who expected to be sent at the time of the armistice' 7 pages. This is followed by a list a page and a half of those awarded military distinctions including Captain Hugo Throssell VC and a full page of those who did not return. The photographer 319 Private William Edwin Leslie Clapham was at Gallipoli at the time of the landings in which he almost certainly took part. Evacuated to Malta with a gunshot wound to his hand on 14 May 1915 he served there briefly as a policeman before being declared unfit and sent back to Australia. [The Author paperback

This map illustrates the Revolutionary War battles in and near the Hudson Highlands showing the chain across the Hudson and details of the Battle of Stony Point and the Battle of Fort Montgomery. The Hudson is the main focus with various other tributaries including Peeks Creek Poplopen Kill Macgregory's Creek Nappies Kill and Florus Fall emptying into Haverstraw Bay. 20 ships dot the river in the Highlands and near Stony Point. Ships' names include Preston Mercury and Tartar off of Peekskill Galleys under Sir Jas. Wallace. The three forts are Fort Clinton Fort Montgomery and Fort Independence Peekskill. The topography is indicated by shading and mountains include "Bear Hill" Bear Mountain; Anthony's Nose "perpendicular height 363 Yards" Burkberg Mountain Dunderburg.<br /> <br /> In the river are notations "Frigate burnt; Galleys burnt' Sloop taken Boom chain. On the shores of the river are dates of battles the different regiments and other details of the battles for the Highlands in 1777. <br /> <br /> It is based on the map drawn by British cartographer William Faden whose maps were printed in Charles Stedman's history of the Revolutionary War in 1794<br /> <br /> Lithograph 11 3/8 x 9" original folds closed tear on left margin not affecting map. Faint fold lines a few tiny chips to extremities light soil else Very Good to Near Fine. Fortune-telling broadsheet regarding the fate of France following the Siege of Paris in September 1870. The author a certain "Doctor Refilando" predicted the event in an article in "La Conviccion" two days prior and the concluding list of predictions made on verso refer to his success as a soothsayer. Additional prophecies reproduced here include that made by a nun in Belley France in 1810; one made by another nun in Paris 1829; a prophecy made in the13th century in verse; and a list of fifteen made by Caesarius of Arles in the sixth century. Apparently unrecorded broadsheet adorned with an original woodcut depicting the Siege of Paris during that Franco-Prussian War. We find none in commerce or the auction records as of February 2020; nor separately catalogued in OCLC COPAC or KVK. Imp. Llorens unknown

The area to the east of the Mississippi is marked "Territory in Dispute." The colonies of Virginia North and South Carolina and Georgia all extend to the Mississippi. <br /><br />English claims to the disputed area are bolstered by a notation along the border between the Carolinas noting: "A large country subject to the English since 1729." Numerous Indian tribes are noted as well as "Wandering Indians" at the western portion of the Gulf coast. <br /><br />Maps from <i>The British Magazine</i> are cited by Jolly as "practically unobtainable." An Act making Provision for Quartering and Billeting Recruiting Officers and Recruits in his Majesty’s Regular Forces employed for the Protection and Defence of his Majesty’s Dominions in North-America.†The law required town officials to quarter and billet recruiting officers and recruits. The authors detail not only the history of the French Foreign Legion and methods of joining but also specifically offers names biographical details and more of many different Americans who fought as Legionnaire’s during World War I with focus on the grinding life in the trenches and experiences in battlefront hospitals. With a woodcut vignette on the title-page. 8 pp. First edition of a highly interesting agreement regarding the treatment and exchange of prisoners of war taken captive whether by the French or by the Dutch army during the French-Dutch war of 1672-1673 the rampjaar or year of disaster. The agreement was concluded on 26 May 1673 and signed on the French side by the notorious François of Montmorency 1628-1695 Duke of Luxembourg the French Governor of Utrecht and instigator of the massacres of Bodegraven and Woerden who later that year made his famous retreat from Utrecht to Maastricht. In 1675 he was made Marechal of France. On the the side of the States General and Stadtholder William III the agreement was signed by Willem Adriaan II of Horne 1633-1694 a high-ranking officer in the army of the States General.The prisoners could be exchanged according to their military ranks or could be ransomed. Pp. 3-5 lists the monetary value for each rank. Cooper with the kind regards of Catherine Gansevoort Lansing Albany N.Y. Dec. 1877". Lansing was Henry Gansevoort's sister.<br /> <br /> Gansevoort was a decorated soldier who served in battle during the Civil War. He served briefly as Private in the 7th NY Militia in Washington DC but soon obtained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th US Artillery. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in March 1862 and served with his battery on the Peninsula and at Second Manassass. He was on the Maryland Campaign and saw action at Antietam.<br /> <br /> This biography is complemented with extracts from his letters to home which add much detail to the description of each battle many of the extracts chosen by his sister.<br /> <br /> 4to 335pp. Bound in full red morocco gilt inner dentelles marbled endpapers gilt decorated spine beveled edges aeg.
