First edition of the most important map in the history of Lebanon the first scientific map of the country.<br /> A highly detailed separately issued large-format lithograph scientific map of Lebanon “based on surveys conducted by French military topographers during their Lebanon-Syria Expedition of 1860–1861. This map defined the notion of ‘Greater Lebanon’ the basis for the creation of modern Lebanon in the wake of the 1919 Paris Peace Conference. Lebanon was at that time part of the Ottoman Empire. The cartographic part of the mission was headed by Captain Charles Gelis who led teams that made advanced systematic trigonometric surveys of the countryside representing the first time that Lebanon had ever been accurately topographically mapped. Map extends into parts of Israel and Syria. In fair condition only with significant soiling and large light stains somewhat affecting readability; numerous small holes to first two leaves most pinhole-sized or slightly bigger a few as large as pea-sized all sporadically affecting text; several short tears to edges and last leaf; old folds. A scarce issue of this influential German-language daily which ran from 1852-1918. The front page devotes considerable space to coverage of the looming Spanish-American War which is here termed "unvermeidlich" inevitable. The increasingly ominous preparations of the two countries since the sinking of the USS Maine are described at length as well as England and various European countries beginning to choose sides. Also included in this issue is content about Japan's imperial ambitions in China viewed here as in a positive light given the potential for spreading Christianity to China news about the Klondike Gold Rush various events occuring on the Pacific Coast and more as well as advertisements in both English and German.Not located in OCLC although several institutions hold other issues of this paper and its earlier iteration the California Chronik. 1940List3520United States and Japan 1940. Photo album measuring 10 ½ x 13 inches containing approximately 350 photos. With four copies of Jane Whitaker’s discharge and immunization papers and the Navy’s Marching to Victory songbook 13th printing Naval Reserve Midshipmen’s School 1943. Album with covers detached and wear to pages; fair. Contents excellent. Overall very good. A photo album belonging to siblings Jane 1924–d. and James 1921–1997 Whitaker of Florida. Both siblings were in the US Navy; the copy of Jane’s discharge paper indicates that she enlisted in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1946. The siblings are descendants of founding Florida figures William Wyatt and Mary Wyatt Whitaker.<br /> <br /> The album mainly covers their time in Hawai’i and Japan. Alongside eighteen photographs of a large military parade one labeled “V-J Day Honolulu†with floats including the Filipino Federation of America’s celebration of General MacArthur and a bilingual float reading “AGGRESSORS GONE FOREVER†and fifteen likely souvenir photos of the Pearl Harbor attack there are approximately 120 candid photographs of the sailors’ lives. These include spending time with family and children sitting on a tank on the beach barbecuing at a park fishing and doing laundry outside. Some of these were taken in Hawai’i and others in Japan; a number show a sign for Nimitz Recreation Field which is likely at the US Fleet Activities in Sasebo Nagasaki. Thirty show men not in uniform but also likely sailors mainly during similar recreational activities. Others include photos of military installations and from inside barracks—bunk beds the kitchenette and dining area. Individuals in the photos are occasionally identified verso by first name.<br /> <br /> The album is uncommon for the candid nature of the personnel photos. Of interest to historians of life in the US Navy in Hawai’i and Japan during WWII. unknown

Light scattered foxing and old folds a couple of short fold separations in blank margin. A variety of bold type sizes and styles within a decorative border. Very Good.<br /> <br /> This eye-catching evidently unrecorded broadside features the iconic Screaming Eagle wings spread and holding a banner which reads "Charge on the Paymaster." Henderson's name and address are printed at the bottom: "John G. Henderson Atty at law and WAR CLAIM AGENT Naples Ill." <br /> The Equalization Act whose terms the broadside recites became law in July 1866. It provided additional bounties to men or their families and heirs who had been honorably discharged after three years' service; and smaller bounties to those honorably discharged after two years' service.<br /> Born in Greene County Illinois in 1837 Henderson became a teacher and then a "prominent" lawyer. He practiced law in Naples Scott County Illinois until 1866; and then in Winchester until 1877 when he became a judge. He then resumed the practice of law. History of Greene and Jersey Counties Illinois. Springfield: 1885. Page 714. Henderson also became something of an authority on Naples' archeological Mounds dating to the year 100 A.D. His work on the Mound Group was noted in the case of Juliet Wade v. Drew Lewis 561 F. Supp. 913 N.D. Printed inside the front cover: 'The accompanying notes have been prepared for your guidance. Additional information is contained in the Home Office Civil Defence Training Manuals which may be obtained on loan through your Instructor.' Divided into the main sections: Civil Defence Organisation; Fire Fighting; High Explosive Missiles; Atomic Warfare; Biological Warfare; Chemical Warfare; Protective Measures. Also present is a full-page 'Civil Defence Report Form'. The first section begins: 'Civil Defence is the responsibility of the Central Government and needs the assistance of Local Authorities Industry and public bodies of many kinds. It includes all measures short of actual combat necessary to mitigate the effects of enemy attack.' The 'Atomic Warfare' section is divided into four subsections: Features of Atomic Explosion; Delayed Radiation Risks; Radiation Sickness; Individual Dosimeter. The enamel badge is roughly 2.5 x 2cm and features red and blue enamel on brass. It consists of a crown topping a circle the latter having an image of a lion surrounded by a blue border with 'I.C.D.S.' The pamphlet is scarce: no copy on OCLC WorldCat and the only copy on COPAC at the Imperial War Museum. At foot of final page: '(1204) WT. 39620. 197080685Delhi: Vikas Publishing 1970. First Thus. Octavo. 23.5cm. Publisher's orange cloth boards titled in black to spine. Dustjacket. 187pp. Strong and tight but visibly sunned to spine and edges of binding and a little bumped to the head of the spine. The priceclipped dustjacket is similarly sunned to the spine and has some light marginal wear but shows very well. A very good presentable copy. Internally clean with some annotation and emphasis to the text from an informed reader presumably Angus Thurmer. There is a 2 page letter from Major General Lunt dated January 1971 on Ministry of Defense notepaper to Angus Thurmer at the US Embassy in New Delhi discussing the book and the editing work and apprising Mr. Thurmer of his current status. Major General Lunt CBE had a prominent and successful career in the British Military spending a significant part of his career in India including a stint as Military Adviser to the High Commission there is a note on the title page to the effect that the book's attentive reader played Polo with Lunt whilst he was stationed in Delhi. The first edition of "From Sepoy to Subedar" was published in 1873 then languished forgotten for almost a century until Major General Lunt in his role as accomplished "Old India Hand" decided a new edition was called for. Primary source material for the period from native Indians is relatively thin on the ground spanning as it does Subedar Ram's memories of the Afghan Wars the first two the retreat from Khabul the subsequent trials and tribulations of a soldier's life and the post-"mutiny" changes to the leadership and administration of India and how badly that went. A fascinating account which should be ranked alongside "Confessions of a Thug" and Lady Florentia Sale's Journal as insights with all faults into the nature of life in and under the British Raj. Signature in good condition. Pugh was an attorney and member of the Confederate Congress.<br /> <br /> From wikipedia:<br /> <br /> Pugh was born in Burke County Georgia and moved to Alabama in 1824. He received a collegiate education studied law under John Gill Shorter and was admitted to the bar in 1841. He began to practise in Eufaula Alabama. He was a presidential elector in 1848 and 1856. He represented Alabama's second district as a Democrat in the United States House of Representatives from December 5 1859 until January 21 1861 when he retired upon the secession of his state.<br /> <br /> He then served as an officer in the Confederate States Army. He was subsequently elected to be the representative from Alabama's 8th District to both the First Confederate Congress and the Second Confederate Congress serving from February 22 1862 until the surrender in 1865. Pugh served on the House Committee on Military Affairs throughout both Congresses where he was a prominent critic of C.S. President Jefferson Davis.1<br /> <br /> Following the war he returned to his law practice. Upon the restoration of his citizenship Pugh was president of the Democratic state convention of 1874 a delegate to the 1875 state constitutional convention and a presidential elector again in 1876. First edition 3rd printing of this memoir of a Tennessee woman marrying a Japanese diplomat before World War II interned at Hot Springs and White Sulphur Springs with the Japanese diplomatic corps the horror and deprivation of living through the War in Japan and finally returning to Tennessee afterwards. This memoir was later made into the 1961 MGM film Bridge to the Sun starring Carroll Baker James Shigeta James Yagi Tetsuro Tamba and Sean Garrison.
