1951222708North Korea or China.: Korean People's Army or People's Volunteer Army. Circa1951-1953. Two double-sided leaflets. Darling I Will Dream: 21 x 15cm. Truth Will Out: 19 x 13cm. Both leaflets somewhat foxed and trifle soiled chipped with a little loss though still in good condition for what were most likely once-active leaflets in a warzone. Two propaganda leaflets intended to be dropped over UN Forces in Korea attempting to convince them to surrender and cooperate with the KPA and PVA. Each leaflet appeals to different modes of persuasion with one relying on an emotional appeal and the other from the perspective of logic.

'Darling I Will Dream That You Are Coming Back to Me This Christmas' is a typical example in the long-winded history of so-called 'counterfeit Christmas cards' that purport to show wistful appeals from sweethearts abandoned back home. The addition of the details of a supposedly deceased GI are intended to add credence to the letter's authenticity though a quick search reveals the soldier in question returned home after his successful tour of duty in Korea married his sweetheart and led out the rest of his life very well.

'Truth Will Out' is a very early example of the conflicting narratives that permeate the North Korean historiography of the Armistice Agreement - most retellings largely hinging on the portrayal of the American leadership as a gaggle of mercurial incompetents.

This particular account details a ceasefire negotiation in which General William K. Harrison abruptly walked out before waiting to hear General Nam Il's "very reasonable proposal". The ultimate purpose of this tale is to encourage UN Forces to passively revolt in protest. While the event did indeed take place in June 1952 in reality Harrison was not empowered to hear counter-proposals and called a recess before Nam Il had the opportunity to launch into what would have undoubtedly been an over-rehearsed propagandistic diatribe. D. Bruce Lockerbie the author of Harrison's biography theorised that the ultimate goal of the American delegation's walk-out was to not only deny the North Koreans a platform but also shock them which it evidently did. . 1950179481Circa1950. Black and white photographic illustration with text lightly browned one small area horizontal central fold. Good copy. 13.4 x 19.3cm. This leaflet was one of a large number of propaganda documents produced by China and North Korea during the Korean War. Part of a series of black-and-white propaganda leaflets which appear to have been produced by the Chinese People's Volunteers the People's Republic of China forces supporting North Korea in the war it aims to convey the message that American prisoners of war were well treated and were in regular communication with their families back home. The printed text assures readers that POWs held by North Korean and Chinese forces will be repatriated soon after the armistice is signed whereas warns the leaflet Allied soldiers from the US Britain and other nations "will have to stay in Korea until the US Government makes up its mind to leave Korea to the Koreans." The photograph purports to show Mrs Christine Brown wife of Lt. Col Gerald Brown reading a letter from her husband who was a prisoner of war in Korea. Gerald Brown was in the US Air Force. He was shot down over Korea and spent almost 3 years as a prisoner of war. Lt. Col. Brown was in fact a Korean War POW who was later repatriated to the US but the authenticity of the photo cannot be verified.

The leaflets were generally distributed by plane or stuffed into artillery shells though propaganda from the Northern side was also sometimes left in no man's land to be picked up by US and other forces fighting on the UN/South Korean side. . unknown

223691Henan. Colour manuscript map of Korea made in Puyang Middle School in 1954 109 x 78cm text in traditional Chinese characters the map which was originally folded has been laid down on heavy gauge paper. Chipped in a number of areas at folds some recent colouring has modified the impact of this loss. While showing signs of use this map is an interesting example of classroom teaching material relating to Korea in 1950s China. The map depicts the principal geographical areas of Korea Japan and the People’s Republic of China. The 38th parallel is clearly marked along with a number of important Korean cities including Hanseong Seoul Kaesong Busan Jinju Incheon and Pyongyang here written as 平垠. Korea is labelled as Chaoxian 朝鮮 the term commonly used in China at the time.

Taken together with the naïve style of calligraphy and the note that it was produced at a middle school Puyang Zhongxue 濮陽中學 in Henan Province shortly after the Korean War it is likely that the map was made by a student possibly named Guo Renwen 郭人文 whose name appears at the lower right. The faint yellow numbers 1–5 painted on the map may refer to a legend or explanatory key that is no longer present. . unknown
19424754Washington DC: El Coordinador de Asuntos Interamericanos 1942. Very good. Pictorial lithograph 20 x 14.25 inches printed in red gray yellow and black. Minor surface wear mild creasing light dust-soiling a few pinholes. A rare poster issued by the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs CIAA during World War II attempting to sway public opinion in Latin America to the Allied side. The CIAA was established by executive order in July 1941 in order to distribute news advertising film reels and more to and from Latin America to counter Italian and German propaganda campaigns in the region. The text of the present poster translates from the Spanish as "Freedom of Speech. One of the four freedoms for which the Allies are fighting." The central image features an open-mouthed face breaking open a large swastika which is itself on fire. A mildly subtle message that free speech destroys fascism. The poster was designed by noted Russian-American graphic designer and photographer Alexey Brodovitch whose printed credit appears at top right; Brodovitch is most well-known for his art direction of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958. A powerful visual display with only one copy reported in OCLC at MOMA though we also find two other institutional holdings at the United States Holocaust Museum and the Hoover Institute. Half-calf over marbled boards marbled endpapers raised bands on spine red black & gilt morocco spine labels minor scuffing wear to corners still VG copy from the library of noted New York City book collector Thomas Bell with his bookplate designed by Nancy Barnhart on front pastedown who was noted for his impressive library devoted mostly to Americana with many titles on Lincoln and sold at Anderson Galleries Auction in 1917. First edition of this scarce Democratic Party Copperhead influenced presidential campaign pamphlet perpetuating the complaints of mistreatment by Democratic candidate and former Civil War general George B. McClellan. This piece appears to have been published at the height of the Cold Harbor campaigns by the Union Army under command of Lieut. General Ulysses S. Grant which were suffering heavy casualties and significant blows to northern morale during the Civil War. The opening letter from President Lincoln denotes his complete confidence in Grant for the 1864 campaigns. In contrast McClellan has presented all of the attempts by Lincoln to encourage move troops and override orders from General as commander of the Union Army. In addition the Democratic ticket under McClellan wanted to negotiate with the Confederates immediately and place the agreement before the voters. Subsequent Documents included further charges against President Lincoln’s arbitrary arrests corruption and frauds Republican opinions about Lincoln and more. Dawley was self-styled as the Publisher to the Million and established himself at 13 and 15 Park Row as the “cheapest printer in the world†whose most successful Civil War publication was the best seller Incidents of American Camp Life. 1861Cat338Lafayette Ohio 1861. Autograph letter signed 2 pp. Addressed to D. T. Chapin of Enfield Connecticut. Good condition with normal folds and light wear. A concise but revealing early Civil War letter combining financial anxiety agricultural reporting and clear-eyed political commentary on slavery and the future course of the conflict. Writing amid the first months of the American Civil War Chapin opens with the immediate purpose of the letter—forwarding “a draft of $240 for int. on the noteâ€â€”before situating the payment within a deteriorating economic landscape: “It is very difficult to get money now even of the best men.†He describes a local economy under strain noting “no market for wool to bring in money†compounded by regional instability “on account of the bank failing and many of the merchants in Medina closing†concluding bluntly: “Terrible bursting times with them.†Even the act of sending funds carries uncertainty as he cautions that “in these times I consider there is a risk in the best of banks.†Alongside these concerns Chapin provides a snapshot of agricultural conditions: “Corn is very backward and short wheat nearly middling grass rather below middling†summing up the situation as “rather tight times as well as troubled times.â€

The most significant portion of the letter however turns to the war itself and the unresolved question of slavery. He writes:

“We hope the end will be well but our nation will have to be humbled. It is well to put down rebellion but it is rather queer that the cause of the trouble must be let entirely alone. The nation will get their eyes open after a while. The President possesses the war power to abolish slavery and Congress possess the power also in my humble opinion and the time will come when they will have to do it unless the south run their heads so hard against the rock as to do it themselves.â€

The letter closes with a brief note on a failed business transaction—“our trade for the sale of the mill fell throughâ€â€”underscoring the economic uncertainty of the moment before returning to family matters. Overall an evocative early Civil War letter by a merchant expressing fears and anxiety for the pending conflict. unknown

Some light browning a little darker at folds and reverse washi repairs to folds on reverse. This colour map of Asia and the Pacific published on 30 January 1942—just one month after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor—offers a striking glimpse into wartime strategy and propaganda. Remarkably despite being produced at the war's outset it accurately anticipated key battlegrounds that would define the conflict. The main map is supplemented by two inset maps: one in the upper right highlighting Japan the Hawaiian Islands and Honolulu and another in the lower left focusing on Singapore with Darwin marked along the lower edge.

The reverse side features a revealing chronological chart titled "Building Great East Asia" documenting Japan's military expansion from the 1931 Manchurian Incident through January 1942 as troops advanced across Southeast Asia. Notably two blank rows were intentionally left at the chart's end anticipating future victories to be recorded as the war progressed—a telling detail that underscores the map's dual role as both strategic document and propaganda tool. An interesting map which combines geographical precision with ideological messaging. . 日本放送協会. [Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai]. unknown
