The unlikeliest of publishing endeavors during the depredations of wartime: an avant-garde large-format lavishly illustrated journal of architecture and decorative arts issued no less under the auspices of an anarchist workers federation. The editors intended to usher in a new era of progressivism and modernism following the defeat of the fascist rebels in the July Barcelona uprising of 1936 ".aquel magnifico y revolucionario 19 de julio tan digno y decisivo; no solo como fin de etapa sino tambien como prologo de una etapa nueva repleta de posibilidades consequidas ya en parte ye en parte perfiladas no siempre malogradas." and the magazine fashioned itself upon the model of such avant-garde revolutionary journals as the Soviet Union's USSR in Construction and the American Labor Defender with bold photo-montage layouts and modernist typography. The timing was not propitious. By December 1937 the Republic was mired in an increasingly hopeless civil war and the glorious New Era that had seemed so certain in July of 1936 was now a rapidly fading hope. The magazine appears to have lasted for only a single issue before folding; today it is extremely rare with no examples in North America and only two physical locations noted in European institutions via COPAC and OCLC Biblioteca Nacional and Bibliotheque Nanterre. BNE attributes editorship to the avant-garde graphic artist DarÃo Carmona de la Puente but this information does not appear to derive from the publication itself which makes no editorial attribution. Titles include: "Union and Liberty" "Old Commodore" "American Star" "An Ode to the Volunteers of 1812" "John Bull Get the Grapes" "Ode for the Fourth of July 1812" among many others. In 1863 this volume was owned by George Eitemiller of McConnellsburg Pennsylvania who was then attending telegraph school in nearby Chambersburg. Four months after the Confederates swept through his region and were defeated at Gettysburg and just five days after Lincoln's Gettysburg Address young Eitemiller was overcome by patriotism and inscribed the volume four times in pencil writing on the titlepage: "Hurrah for Liberty & Union." D4424France early 20th century. WWI ephemera -- aircraft. Silhouettes d'Avions Illustrated manuscript on paper in French. France: c. 1915-1925. 16 leaves pocket-sized: 135 x100mm. 15 hand- colored illustrations depicting three views of planes; two in profile and one birds eye view all are labeled for early French English and German aircraft models. Original paper wrappers titled Silhouettes dAvions with later tape reinforcing hinge; somewhat brittle leaves loose but present. This skillful manuscript perhaps created by a younger person as an admirer of the craft represents sixteen popular models of biplane and monoplane patterns. This interesting piece of ephemera is inextricably linked to the three great European production centers of World War I-era aircraft: representing France England and Germany. World War I was the first walrus in which aircraft were deployed on a large scale. The sky had become another battlefield no less important than the battlefields of land and sea. Initially planes were used mostly for reconnaissance over the North Sea and strategic bombing raids. Then at the onset of war pilots and engineers learned from experience and developed many specialized models; including fighters bombers and ground-attack airplanes. These evolving flying machines were recognized to be not just toys but weapons. In addition fighter pilots were venerated as modern knights and many became popular heroes. All well represented are the French military aviation exercises of 1911 through 1913 that pioneered production of the Farman Caudron Voisin Breguet Nieuport fighter models. Listed for both French and English aircraft are the Bleriot and Morane models. England had started late and had initially relied largely on the French aircraft industry especially for engines. The English planes represented here are the Airco B.E. 2 and Vickers models. Notably the British Vickers was the first experimenting with mounting machine guns. Perhaps best represented by the whimsical drawings are the German planes of the variant Taube models including the Albatros Aviatik D.F.W. Jeannin Stahltaube and Rumpler Taube. The Rumpler Taube was a pre-World War I monoplane aircraft. It was the first mass-produced military plane in Germany and was the most common having two seats. Imperial Germanys first practical military aircraft the Taube dove was used for virtually all military aircraft applications as a fighter bomber surveillance aircraft and trainer from 1910 until the start of World War I in August 1914. At least five versions of the Taube models are named and illustrated in this contemporary manuscript model book. With: French World War I Colonels Ledger an autograph note c. 1899-1904 and transcribed letters of 1914 from a certain E. Henry while stationed in Lorraine. Manuscript booklet on graph paper written in pencil in French 165 x 110mm. France: Sept.-Oct. 1918. Original blue wrappers with paper label no. 10. 15 leaves. Text consists of dated entries with brief daily descriptions of regiment activities one poignant line translated beaucoup du cadavres sur le terrain many corpses on the ground. Laid-in is 1 page autograph note listing eight men their death dates and a brief biographical description stained at edges and 4 page autograph manuscript signed E. Henry to Ma cherie femme of three different letters transcribed and docketed by the wife of Henry. Letters all dated August 1914 with content updating his wife on his news while stationed in Lorraine. He writes on 27th August 1914 translated You cannot imagine the suffering I endured at my unfortunate wounds and goes on about his Lieutenants death although Henry finally says Je suis en bonne posture Im in good shape. Madame Henry seemingly transcribed the letters on to one large folding bifolia to maintain their content. Interesting pieces of World War I era ephemera consisting of personal reflections and unofficial recordings of military operations in French regiments. <br/><br/> unknown books

Pictorial account of the Japanese invasion of the Philippines published as a propaganda piece to support and commemorate the endeavor. Photographs are captioned in Japanese and include images of Japanese soldiers involved in actions all over the Philippines as well as a grateful populace. One image shows Japanese soldiers handing out treats to Filipino children. There are also several photographs of American POWs; one image shows men lying in hospital beds others show them seated in large groups. An interesting pictorial history. hardcover books

Short closed tear at lower edge a few minor wrinkles at edges of folds minor breaks at apexes of a couple of folds with a slight trace of tanning along folds otherwise a near fine fresh unused example. A bold image by Riggs promoting increased homefront production dominated by a large waist-up figure of an American airman raising his goggles with his right hand and gesturing "thumbs up" with his left. Robert Riggs 1896-1970 was in his heyday one of the best- known artists and illustrators in the United States. After studies at the Art Students League and service during World War I Riggs settled in Philadelphia his home base for the rest of his life. In the 1930s and '40s he rose to national prominence as an illustrator lithographer and commercial artist producing well-known images of boxers and circuses two life-long obsessions and of soldiers during World War II. In 1940 around the peak of his career as an illustrator his drawings commanded $750- $1500 each and his name was as well-known in the trade as that of Norman Rockwell. Curiously at a recent auction of African American printed manuscript and visual material an example of this poster was offered quite tenuously making the assertion that the image is of a Tuskegee airman. The Dover Patrol provided safe passage to the Continent for British troops in World War One and protected and regulated Channel traffic during the war. Though "no figure of rhetoric can render justice to the quiet resolution of men making up for the inadequacy of their means" Conrad pays them a handsome tribute. This essay written at the request of Lord Northcliffe originally appeared in the The Times July 27 1921 and was later included in Later Essays.<br/>This is one of the most difficult items in the Conrad canon nearly sixty copies eighty percent of the edition are held in universities. Still good. A panoramic photo of one of the first African- American training units formed at Camp Lee now Fort Lee Virginia in late 1941. The recruits are divided by platoon and accompanied by their predominantly white officers with names of all printed below. More than two hundred trainees are shown and named. The 9th Quartermaster Training Regiment was the first African-American training unit to form at Camp Lee in late 1941 just before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The soldiers in this photograph likely entered the army in early 1942 and were nearing the end of their training when the image was taken. They soon would be deployed overseas or around the United States working to store transport and distribute food fuel clothing and ammunition necessary to supply the army's combat divisions. Camp Lee was established during World War I as a training site and during World War II was expanded to provide training for quartermasters and related support specialists. Although some black soldiers saw combat during World War II the vast majority were assigned to all-black quartermaster and engineer units providing logistical support and distributing supplies and ammunition to troops around the world. President Truman finally desegregated the armed forces in 1948 with Executive Order 9981 and the last all-black unit was disbanded in 1954. <br> <br> African-American World War II Army panoramas are scarce in the marketplace. 1860CAT0150New York 1860. An unusual image of a Zouave soldier in an outdoor setting holding a horse. During the Civil War roughly 95 Zouave regiments formed adopting the names uni-forms and sometimes fighting styles of the North African Zouave brigades. The bulk - about 70 of the regiments - fought for the Union cause. We were unable to determine anything else about this soldier though the image was found in a New York estate. New York was home to two of the most famous Zouave brigades the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry and the 11th New York Volunteer In-fantry. Old folds four short horizontal closed tears to right edge expertly repaired on verso. Light penciled parentheses marks around final stanza. Very good. A rare example of a Civil War-era carrier's address produced by the printer's apprentice of the "Democrat and Reflector." This is very likely a reference to the SCHENECTADY DEMOCRAT AND REFLECTOR which ran from 1860 to 1867 in that city. For over 200 years carrier's addresses were printed by the apprentices or "printer's devil" at printing shops around the world and handed out on New Year's Day by carriers of newspapers in an attempt to solicit tips and gifts from loyal patrons. This extra income was an important supplement for apprentices who often worked unpaid positions just to gain experience. <br> <br> The present example prints a long poem divided into the four seasons with a "Finale" added after the winter stanza. The author of the poem begins "I sing of the old year past" and follows with a long poem beginning in the spring as its "Mild southern gales breathe on the earth" and "notes of joy fill earth and sky." The summer "offers her fruits and flowers." In the autumn "Bleak tempests gather in the north." And winter arrives "bleak and dreary" though there is mention of "The Christmas Carol - St. Nicholas too." <br> <br> Lastly in the "Finale" the author includes an entire stanza on the current Civil War which begins: "'Grim visaged war' yet rules our land And calls from quiet homes full many a band Of heroes. - And Industry with might and skill To maim and splinter wound and kill Makes wondrous cannon projectiles vast; From 'Swamps' a fiery 'Angel' cast To shell with Grecian fires the spot Where rank Secession was begot." <br> <br> The address concludes with a call to "Support the printer and the Carrier too" as "The Carrier dofts his beaver and wishes all A Happy New Year - on his annual call." <br> <br> No copies of this address appear in OCLC. unknown books
1862101900Three leaves two 8 x10 sheets and one 5x10 text on all sides and comes with typed transcripts. Normal aging and browning and a few tears at folds. The letters were written by George Roden who was born in 1841 from Newark New Jersey who was the son of English immigrants and served in the 2nd New Jersey Infantry regiment. He was a corporal at the time these letters were written. The letters talk about the desolation of the Virginia countryside. "Not a fence or a decent house is to be seen for miles… the black remains of Camp fires with the filth of the many camps of both armies are seen on most every farm. Included in the article is the text of Abraham Lincoln's Message on the act's constitutionality. The Confiscation Act gave legal authority to courts to implement the legal seizure of land and property from citizens who aided the Confederacy. Also in the act was a clause allowing emancipation of slaves in the Confederacy that lived in areas of Union occupation. Most of the rest of the text on both pages are small articles on Civil War battles and political news in the Confederacy. With two-page "Duty Roster" in envelope on verso. Framed. Wear to frame minor water damage to left margin of photo slight creases along upper margin small scrape to center-right of photo. "Duty Roster" worn and chipped along several edges and with a few small holes from previous hanging. Overall very good. A panoramic photo of the 13th Provisional Company U.S. Army Air Service a specialized training unit for aircraft mechanics. The photo features 112 soldiers in three rows note the propeller insignia visible on several of the soldiers' sleeves designating them as aviation mechanics. Four officers in campaign hats sit in the middle of the front row. The accompanying typed "Duty Roster" divides soldiers by "Sergeants" "Cooks" and "Privates" with tent and cot numbers added in manuscript. The officers are not included on the roster. <br> <br> The Air Service started as the Air Service of the American Expeditionary Force in 1917 and then on May 24 1918 merged with the Aviation Section Signal Corps of the U.S. Army to become the U.S. Army Air Service. The Air Service's early organization fluctuated substantially during World War I with numerous units like this one formed temporarily and then disbanded renamed or merged with other units. There is no record of this unit in the ORDER OF BATTLE OF THE UNITED STATES LAND FORCES IN THE WORLD WAR. although extrapolating from personnel records and oral histories this unit was likely stationed at Hazelhurst Field or Mitchel Field both located on the Hempstead Plains of Long Island two of the largest air bases in the country at the time. This unit was likely formed toward the end of the war and while they could not have known it at the time most of these soldiers were never deployed overseas or even served active duty stateside. In an oral history conducted by the Chesaning Michigan Public Library in 1976 former Sgt. Arthur Walser 1898-1980 relates how he was working at Curtiss Aircraft and had hoped to join the Army but had trouble obtaining a release from his employer and for good reason: aircraft manufacturing had exploded with America's entry into World War I and Curtiss was a major military contractor. Walser was finally released but enlistments had closed although "they opened enlistments if you could pass a certain exam in Detroit motor mechanics and there was four of us went down and we passed then we came home and sat here and waited until they called us and we were supposed to be trained in what we went in. We were sent directly to Long Island." Art and Ferne Walser Oral History Interview. This was October 30 1918. Walser was transferred to the 107th Aero Squadron which was in France at the time but he never departed; the Armistice was signed on November 11. He was discharged on December 10. Walser notes that his fellow sergeant and hometown friend Wayne Perrott 1899- 1939 had been transferred to the 45th in England but he never departed either. <br> <br> An uncommon photo at the dawn of American air power. 194547585Breendonk: Amicale des Postiers Prisonniers Politiques Rescapés 1945. Original broadside pictorial diploma 24.5x32cm. printed lithograph on cream stock in red gilt and black accomplished in manuscript and rubberstamp. Minor foxing else a fresh Fine example. Exceedingly uncommon diploma awarded to a survivor of the Nazi prison camp at Fort Breendonk outside Antwerp. The camp generally held political prisoners members of the Resistance and Jews who were almost all subsequently dispersed to the larger concentration camp across Eastern Europe. More than 3000 prisoners passed through Breendonk of whom approximately ten percent died or were executed within its walls while half perished following deportation to other camps. The present certificate awarded to a member of the French resistance a mechanic outside Saumur in the Maine-et-Loire department of Western France his arrest part of a massive purge following the assassination of a Dr. Ritter representative of Gauleiter Sauckel in France see Colonel Remy "La Résistance en Anjou Touraine et Orléanais" 1975 Vol. 1 p. 103. The entire town of Saumur was later awarded the Croix de Guerre for its role in the resistance. <br/><br/>Certificate margins adorned with poignant vignettes of camp life men in striped uniforms awaiting execution working in the mines or caught in barbed wire fence. In the case of Huberdeau his first name here spelled "Villiam" he was awarded this diploma for "sa déportation dans le bagnes nazis" "his deportation to the nazi camps". Though no mention is explicitly made to Breendonk it appears that the award was given to survivors of that camp specifically. Williamson. They were attempting to find routes from the Sacramento Valley to the Columbia River.
