He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1837. In 1861 he was promoted to the rank of colonel and appointed chief of staff to Lieutenant General Winfield Scott. Townsend became assistant adjutant general of the army and served in that position until the end of the war. He was brevetted brigadier general in September 1864 and major general in March 1865 for ""meritorious faithful and distinguished services in the adjutant generals department during the rebellion.""During the war Townsend was the principal executive officer of the War Department and was more intimate with Abraham Lincoln and Secretary Stanton than any other military official. He originated the plan of a U.S. military prison and established the prison at Fort Leavenworth Kansas. Townsend was appointed Adjutant General of the U.S. Army in 1869 and served in that capacity until he retired in 1880. unknown books

A piece of linen 19 1/2 by 24 1/2 inches printed with 28 portraits of heads-of-state and political and military leaders mostly from England and Commonwealth countries but also including those from allied countries: France Belgium Serbia Russia and Japan. A central motif representing Britain's pact with Belgium wherein Britain promised to aid Belgium if her neutrality was breached is superimposed over flags of the allied nations. "A scrap of paper" the German Chancellor von Bethman-Hollweg's derisive remark about the pact is printed next to the document with an arrow pointing toward it. But arching above and below the document are the phrases "Liberty & Peace" and "Our Word Our Bond." Portraits of Lord Kitchener General Joffre Grand Duke Nicholas and General French the top British French and Russian military leaders are printed above the pact. The remaining portraits form a border around the cloth; moving clockwise from the right corner they are: King of Servia sic Czar of Russia General Botha Gen. Smith Dorrien Gen. D. Henderson Gen. The poster "is an indirect invocation of the political order in the United States and for those who remember a reminder that both Lyndon Johnson in 1964 and Richard Nixon in 1968 won the presidency with promises of peace - which were then contradicted by their actions." OWI Poster No.37 featured the image of a cheerful G.I. drinking coffee from a tin container with the intention of encouraging adherence to rationing on the homefront as well as appealing to families with boys overseas. The man in the photo is Thomas J. Murray d.October 16 2002 who from 1943-1945 served as the face of rationing for the OWI; his portrayal of "GI Joe in the foxhole" contributed greatly towards the homefront rationing effort and gaining support for the war. This exceptional-content letter is a petition for clemency sent to the Governor of Georgia on behalf of a soldier who had been sentenced to death for murdering his senior office. In part: "the deceased and the petitioner were comrades in the army and both got drunk.He is a boy just verging to manhood.who has given five years service in the honorable cause of defending our country. The deeds of this patriot could atone for the errors of youth. The sentence of.death for murder affords ample room for Executive interference.both were drunk in the morning and were strolling without the garrison - without a solitary witness to attest his innocence. He has a record of good conduct." The petitioner James Nixon was illiterate and signed his signature with an "X" after his name. This petition also contains the signatures of thirteen soldiers and officers of the U.S. Artillery as well as the Officers of the Court. A later issue of this edition published shortly after the beginning of the War of Jenkins' Ear. Sir Robert Walpole's lengthy diplomatic efforts eventually came to naught and he bowed to popular sentiment in October of 1839 and commenced the War of Jenkins' Ear. "Includes several references to naval actions & commerce in the West Indies" - EUROPEAN AMERICANA. The map extends from Bois du Bologne in the southwest to Noilly Levalloise-Perret and Clichy in the northwest and from Bois de Vincenne in the southeast to Pantin in the northeast. Incredible detail. An inset of the Bois de Vincennes the largest public park in the city established by Napolean III is in the lower right corner. Wear along original folds. Good condition. 1916WRCAM54699El Paso Tx.: Medley & Shulman 1916. Panoramic photograph 10 x 51 1/2 inches. Minor edge wear a few tiny closed edge tears. Overall very good. Tightly rolled. A well-composed panoramic image of Camp Stewart taken during the Texas-Mexico border war. Camp Stewart was established near El Paso Texas in 1916 specifically to defend the Texas border against ensuing attacks from the Mexican Revolutionary general Pancho Villa. This activity was part of the Mexican Border Campaign or Pershing's Punitive Expedition an effort by President Woodrow Wilson to pursue and capture or kill Pancho Villa and to halt Villa's paramilitary actions on American soil. Major General John Pershing was tasked by Wilson to find Villa and disrupt his forces. Over the course of nine months Pershing's men pursued Villa skirmishing with the Mexican revolutionaries but they never succeeded in capturing Villa himself. The image shows a vast array of tents and temporary buildings along with men on both horseback and foot arrayed in the desert not far from a mountainous backdrop. The photographers Medley & Shulman were locals and produced the photograph in El Paso. Medley & Shulman unknown books

Our Battery Commander however was good enough to take the view that somewhat expanded they might constitute a kind of interim battery record of those interesting months." The larger of two formats in which this poster was issued. It features a fair-haired US 2nd Lt. with his head bandaged and with some stains to his uniform cast against a backdrop of a desolate battlefield with armaments a shattered tree and barbed wire receding into the distance. Sloan b. 1915 began his career in commercial art in 1940 including commissions for covers and illustrations for such publications as Time Coronet and Collier's. After he was drafted the same year this poster was issued he did illustrative work for military manuals as well as larger commissions such as the 1944 watercolor "Station Hospital." One of his most widely exhibited works is the 1944 "Negro Soldier" now at the Fogg Museum at Harvard. GPO unknown books

Printed on board the USS George Washington a German ocean liner seized by the US and converted to a troop transport during WWI The Hatchet a reference to the legend about George Washington and the cherry tree was started in February 1918 to as a diversion for the troops and sailors on board who were making the dangerous Trans-Atlantic crossing. A bend of shipboard gossip and news received via the ship's radio the single-sheet paper was written by officers with literary experience and printed by on a small hand-press by men who had worked in the printing and publishing business. With a print run of 7000 the paper whose motto was "We Cannot Tell a Lie" boasted that it had "The Largest Circulation on the Atlantic Ocean." <br/><br/>Our collection was presented by the ship's chaplain who also doubled as the newspaper's managing editor to banjo player Joe Lorraine. Lorraine was one of the professional semi-professional and amateur players of the American Stage and Lyceum in WWI that followed the American Army through the war and entertained the troops often in areas close to the frontline. Lorraine entertained more than 2000000 soldiers in 650 appearances over 5 months before being invalided for mustard gas exposure and sent home to recuperate. He returned in 1919 with his famous autographed bull neck banjo which had been signed by more than 700 soldiers from most of the major battles of the war. A pen and ink inscription at the head and tail of Vol. 6 No. 1 reads: "Presented to me by the Chaplain of the George Washington Property of Joe Lorraine. These papers were presented on the transport steamer George Washington during the war with Germany. President Woodrow Wilson sailed to and returned from France on this boat.". unknown books

1840105031<p>Small family archive of letters 10 pieces in all some folio size other basic letter sheet size over 20 pages of text some docketed on reverse. Most pages are aged and browned some chips and tears a few holes at center folds a little staining but otherwise about very good. This family archive begins with a letter dated June 14 1840 and provides a glimpse of life in still early America during the pioneer period. In the first letter which is. from near Danville Missouri daughter Emily Lee and Adam Lee to father Ely Butcher in Randolph Virginia asking for money. Emily complains about poor health but tells him to consider moving out there where good land could be had. Another letter dated September 24 1840 is from Rock Island County Illinois from John H. Butcher to his father Ely in Randolph Virginia. John Butcher a farmer tells his father he is in "tolerable good health" but talks about some hard times where he lives. He comments on the rivers being very low and it appears his shipping costs were double what they should be. He stays he finds times very hard in this country harder than expected and adds he couldn’t get $1000 for his home at that time. He even makes a comment about a split in government but that the Whigs may feel they won writing not totally clear on this comment. On January 2 1842 from Danville Missouri we see another letter from Emily Lee to her father Ely Butcher in Randolph Virginia. This letter has a sad tone as Emily complains she hasn’t gotten a letter from her father in almost two years despite writing to him a few times. She says she feels neglected by her father and brothers and times are very hard. She mentions store credit is not available and they lost a horse. According to Emily her in-laws are no help and she has eight children to take care of. She tells her father she will see him in the spring and she expects him to do something about her situation. Seems like Ely’s kids are often in need and asking dad for help. On August 20 1844 John Butcher In Rock Island Illinois to Ely Butcher in Beverly Randolph County Virginia appears to be visited by his sister and his brother-in-law and sister Adam Lee and Emily lee. The farm is doing well and he indicates that oat and corn prices are "tolerable" and he expects to produce 800 bushes of corn and wheat. It appears his sister wants a divorce and it also appears John asks his father to intercede with his uncle Peyton about the land he uses. He seems to be tired of being a renter. He asks his father to negotiate a deal and help him pay for it. He apologizes for the tone of the letter but sounds a little desperate. There are also what appears to be some detailed receipts for the goods of Ely Butcher the dates appear to be 1842 and 1843. In fourth receipt the date is unclear but could be as late as 1866. A final document is a marriage certificate for Hannah Hart Butcher and the date is November 22 1911.</p> books
