An elaborate announcement of a mass meeting held at Los Angeles's Olympic Stadium April 6 1940 hosted by the Hollywood Peace Council American Youth Congress and the Congress of Industrial Organizations and a coalition of unions. The newspaper reproduces cartoons and news reports from 1917 harkening back to the previous world war. April 6 marked the anniversary of the United States's entry into that conflict. Explanatory slips of paper in simplified Chinese characters measuring 6.7 x 18.7cm are provided for 18 photographs lacking two slips for numbers 15 and 19. Pin-holes at corners of photographs corners little creased one corner chipped. An interesting collection of photographs in good condition. This collection of 20 black and white photographs shows a Chinese and international student demonstration against American imperialist aggression in Vietnam that took place in front of the American Embassy in Moscow in 1965. Photos 1-13 show an initially peaceful demonstration by Chinese and international students that turned ugly after Soviet troops cavalry vehicle-mounted guns and water sprayers were sent in with Russian generals personally taking charge. The chaos can be clearly felt in some of the blurred images where students were being beaten up and arrested. Photograph 14 shows an injured student Huang Zhaogeng being taken off a plane in Beijing on a stretcher. The photographs numbered 15 - 20 show demonstrations in Beijing in support of injured Chinese student demonstrators two leaders making speeches and medical care and support from friends. Olympia which served as Admiral Dewey’s flagship during the Spanish-American War and had served as the flagship from 1895 three years prior as flagship of the Asiatic Squadron. This volume opens with an illustrated account of the USS Olympia’s cruises and experiences visiting China Japan Siberia and The Philippines. Not least an early work illustrated by John Charles Goodchild 1898-1980 the South Australia artist and art educator. 'In 1913 the family emigrated to South Australia where young John worked as a signwriter before enlisting in the First AIF in 1917 and served as a stretcher bearer with the 9th Field Ambulance in France where he was wounded in 1918. While recuperating in hospital he made a series of sketches for the Army field paper "Digger". After the war he was commissioned by the Australian Government to produce a series of thirty six pen drawings of war graves for the book "Where Australians Rest" published in Melbourne 1920' Wikipedia. <p>Dornbusch 155; not in Fielding and O'Neill. Album has dark colored soft padded leather covers with "Autographs" signed in gilt on the front cover. Leather dentelles inside. Decorative end sheets. The right front end sheet was mostly removed. Repaired. New dark blue mulberry paper spine added. Front and rear hinges repaired with tissue. The owner worked as a Nurse in the hospital ward at 40 Stationary Hospital Harfluer France and at Ward 8 St. John Military Hosp. Woking Surrey. Her inscription is written on the front paste down - "Miss Ethel E. J. Clarke "The Grove" 41 Moore St. Worcester." 56 pages of this album were used for original art inscriptions autographs and verse. 27 of the pages have illustrated with original art. One page has a cut out racist cartoon character of black children. Another page has a photograph of a soldier in uniform. The majority of the inscriptions and art work are dated 1918 and 1919. A handful of 1924 inscriptions located towards the back. No other dates recorded. Several inscriptions from soldiers include their home place and regimental unit inside. Aircraft identified in the images include the massive Handley Page Type O biplane bomber Spad biplane downed German Zeppelin a Nieuport 17 C.1 French sesquiplane fighter; Voisin biplane a French dirigible and others. Also included are images of German aviators’ remains near their downed plane German casualties on the battlefield one pile of skeletal remains along with German Turret Gun German POW’s on the march and French tank. Contemporary Spruce plywood post-binder covers same as wood used for spars and biplane bodies in World War I rounded corners piano hinge front joint gilt decorative lettering & logo on front cover minor scuffing shelfwear still VG exemplar. This outstanding souvenir album depicts the height of the vital Naval Aviation Training School which provided essential technical expertise and training to entire generations of Naval Aviators and Naval aviation mechanics and carpenters through World War I and beyond. Founded originally in 1904 when a board appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt selected two farms of north of Lake Bluff IL as a training station which originally covered 172 acres. By Armistice Day at the end of World War I the facility had expanded to 1200 acres and over 45000 men underwent training. Of particular interest in this album are the 36 panoramic photographs documenting Naval Aviator and Naval Aviation mechanic classes for the 15th Regiment and 1st Battalion 15th Regiment from 1919-1920 as well as class rooms machine shops for aviation mechanics and Naval instructors. Others encompass the cutaway model Aviation engines with instructional charts on the surrounding wals the carpenter’s shop with aviation machinery jigs on work benches and airline bodies under construction. One photo depicts the Motor Laboratory Steam Laboratory and Equipment from the USS Eagle 25 at the Aviation Mechanics’ School a US Navy patrol boat which had sunk in a storm in June 1920 and then been raised and sold off as a hulk by Dec. 1921. Other panoramic photos capture the Riggers’ School classroom at Great lakes with full scale biplanes and seaplanes scale model dirigible the Coppersmith School classroom the Fittings classroom with airplane propellers hanging from the walls dip baths for machined parts and nickel plate coating and several of the Naval Aviation School football baseball and other sporting teams including the largest panorama of the Inter-Training Station Baseball championship team from Great Lakes. Wallenstein 1861-1958 was a longtime Chicago photographer through the first four decades of the 20th Century who operated his studio out of his 3928 N. Kenneth home and specialized in panoramic photographs. Western Photo Studio in Waukegan IL appears to have been short-lived as the Waukegan IL directories from 1918-1921 do not list the business but possibly connected with the Western Union Telegraph offices as the address was interchangeable. Volpe 1885-1950 began working in New York originally as a bookbinder before enlisting as an aviation mechanic with the US Navy in 1910 assigned originally to the newly formed ground school in Pensacola and later became Chief Warrant Officer Pilot Airman and Instructor who oversaw the Naval Aviation Training School from 1918-1921. First edition of this exceedingly scarce flight handbook for the famed North Americaqn F-86A Sabrejet swept wing fighter jet. This jet fought continual high-speed dogfights over Korea with similar swept-wing Soviet MiG-15 jet fighters and was considered the best fighter aicraft in the war. It experienced an extended production run of over 7800 aircraft through 1956 and was used in Air Forces around the world until 1994. This handbook details the capabilities for the aircraft armed with .50-caliber machine guns carrying bombs rockets or chemical tanks powered by the J47 turbojet engine operating limitations flight characteristics systems operation crew duties and all-weather operations. Many of the American pilots flying the Sabrejets during the Korean War were experienced World War II veterans. However as the war progressed increasing numbers of pilots were being trained at Nellis Air Force Base and the casualty rate for the fighters were quite high.
