5104CIVIL WAR IN LOUISIANA. ALS. 2pgs. April 5 1864. Baton Rouge Louisiana. An autograph letter signed “Matilda Victorâ€. Victor wrote to Major General Benjamin F. Butler 1818-1893 in Fort Monroe Virginia asking his help is securing her a pass to travel to New York for free. She also mentions Secretary of War Edwin Stanton 1814-1869. Victor was the Headmistress of St. Mary’s Academy a Catholic girls’ school in Baton Rouge. “General: Will you obtain for me from the War dept a pass for myself & maid to N. York on a Govnt Transport Major General Banks wrote to Mr. Stanton requesting a pass for me. I enclose his letter to a certain Col. a friend of mine then at Washington requesting him to present the letter in person. He had left Washington & I presume the letter has gone to the dead letter office. Gen. B. is now in the field & I know of no alternative but to ask this fresh act of kindness from you. I must go to W. with my papers. I have not the means to meet the expenses of a private steamer. Gen. B. asked for me a free pass stating his reasons for so doing. It is unfortunate that his letter has been lost of course Sec. Stanton would not notice any application which I should personally make. I am ashamed General to ask so much from you. For this & the kindness which you have already shown me I can but pray that God may repay for me; if not to yourself then to your own child if ever she is so unfortunate as to need kindness as much as I have in the past two years. Yours with respect & gratitude Matilda Victorâ€. A docket on the back in another hand directs Victor to a Chief Doctor in New Orleans who could give her transportation. The letter is in very good condition with a large but light stain through all pages. unknown books

181224163
WAR OF 1812.Document Signed. Litchfield County Conn. Ca. 1813-1815. docketed "Support of the War 1812" 1p.

On June 1 1812 the War of 1812 became the first war declared by the United States. New Englanders derisively called it "Mr. Madison's war" and bemoaned its economic impact especially in coastal areas where shipping and fishing had been largely shut down by the British Navy. The conflict was so unpopular in the region that a number of politicians who had supported it were voted out of office in the next election.
Nonetheless much of the funding and many of the troops came from the New England and some of the conflict's signal naval battles were fought just off the New England coast.

This document signed by eight New Englanders is evidence of that support. The traceable names such as Asa Prime Benjamin Stone John J. Orton and Elijah Couch originate in Litchfield County Connecticut hailing from towns such as New Milford Reading and Kent. Their support is both patriotic and pragmatic: the British depredations suffered by coastal New England residents might have seemed distant to these inland farmers in the Northwest Corner of Connecticut largely out of British reach.

Full transcript

"Whereas great pains have been taken to impress the public mind with the idea that the War in which we are engaged with Great Britain is extensively unpopular and that it will not be supported by the People of New-England the undersigned think proper to declare that while they lament the necessity of a War they are fixed in the determination to support it till the attainment of an honorable peace."

Signed by: Hyman Buckingham / Asa Prime Junior / Benjamin Brown / Peter Forwith / Morgan Holmes / Benjamin Stone / John J Orton / Elijah Couch

Docketed Support of the War of 1812

Condition

Oblong 8vo creased faintly toned generally very good.
books

18471730Puebla 1847. Very good. Broadside 12.75 x 8.5 inches. Minor soiling and wear. A rare broadside that prints the thanks and admonitions of the Governor of Puebla Domingo Ibarra following an attempted insurrection there in late February and March 1847 during the Mexican-American War. The uprising was a part of the so-called Polkos Rebellion that followed popular outrage at a January law that allowed the federal government to seize church property in order to pay for the war effort. In Puebla the revolt involved elements of the city's military garrison but was successfully put down by the rest of the guard. In this address Ibarra seeks to inspire unity amongst the citizenry and to warn them of the imminent danger of the American army having just landed at Veracruz. The broadside begins:

The landing of Scott at Veracruz was probably the primary encouragement for negotiations between rebel factions and the federal government. Ibarra concludes:

A stirring address and rare.
