1799WRCAM48177Philadelphia 1799. Broadside 13 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches printed in three columns. Docketed in ink on verso. Three horizontal folds. Some light edge wear small separations at edges of folds not affecting text. Very good. Rare congressional act extending the suspension of trade with France during the so- called "Quasi-War" of the late 1790s and adding a provision allowing the U.S. Navy to inspect and seize American ships that are violating the embargo. This act was approved February 9 1799 and extends the provisions of the law first approved on June 13 1798. It is signed in type at the end by President Adams Vice President Jefferson and Speaker of the House Jonathan Dayton. The Quasi-War was an undeclared conflict between the United States and France during the Adams administration in the late 1790s manifested mostly in naval engagements between the two nations. The war was the outgrowth of deteriorating Franco-American relations which had been weakened earlier in the decade by the Genêt Affair and the XYZ Affair and it wreaked havoc on commerce between the two nations. One of the main weapons wielded by Adams was to ban American commerce from France and French dependencies accomplished by the congressional act of 1798 and extended by the present law. The law forbids American ships from trading with France or with French dependencies including in the West Indies and goes on to bar French commerce and French ships from American ports. Significantly this act goes beyond the provisions of the 1798 law by permitting United States Navy vessels to inspect and potentially seize American vessels that have traded with France or with French dependencies.

This broadside format is unusual for the printing of a law and indicates that it was meant to be displayed in ports and customs officers for the attention of ships' masters who may have been unaware of the embargo law or willfully violating it. 1863WRCAM54505Richmond 1863. Printed form approximately 24 x 36 inches completed in manuscript. Folded. Light wear and a few small separations along folds. Slightly wrinkled at right edge. Moderate tanning scattered foxing. Still very good. A rare example of a Civil War muster roll for a Confederate unit. This roll is for for Company E of the 2nd Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters commanded by Maj. J.J. Cox as they mustered on Feb. 28 1863 near Chattanooga shortly after the battle of Fort Donelson. Although it was a Georgia Battalion the vast majority of men in Company E were from Montgomery Alabama. As a part of Gen. J.K. Jackson's Brigade in the Army of Tennessee the unit fought at Murfreesboro Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge and later as a part of Gen. Gist's Brigade participated in the battle for Atlanta and Hood's Tennessee operations. The roll lists all officers and enlisted men records two deaths in the company a number of absentees through sickness and desertion and even notes two instances of substitution. Civil War soldier substitutions were a controversial tactic in which men of means bought their way out of service. A fine copy of a scarce Confederate military document. unknown books

5101WORLD WAR II IN JAPAN. ALS. 2pgs. October 1 1945. Hirosaki Japan. An autograph letter signed “Dale†Christensen written home by an Allied serviceman stationed in Japan shortly after the official end of World War II. “Well I haven’t had a chance to write for some time. We made it up here O.K. but the ship sure was loaded. We landed at Aomori and this place is inland about 30 miles. We have had no trouble at all. We spent the first night at an airport and then moved to another Army camp the next day then the third bn came up and took over here. I was in on the big thing at this camp I came up with the first gen jeeps and saw the Jap General sign the camp over to us then to top it all off I was picked to take the Jap General to his home. He talked to me all the way but I didn’t know a thing he said. When he got out he saluted me. He seemed happy about the whole thing. The climate here is good and cool. We have a big mt right afore us and it looks just like Mt Fugiama sic. They say it sure gets cold here in the winter. The rice is just headed out and it is very pretty here but I hope I can soon come home…We are cleaning this camp up now it sure needed it. I don’t see how the Japs lived in it. Bugs and dirt all over. We sure are making a change in the looks of it. They say they might give each one of us a Jap Rifle and bayonet to take home I don’t think there is any thing to it. I sure would like to have one. They sure can grow the fruit and garden stuff here but they sure are way behind in the way to live. I think even behind the Philippines…The papulation sic of this place in 97000 and Aomori – 57000. Aomori was bombed and it sure was smashed and burned. Well we have a few Japs working in this camp and I think as a whole they will like better from now on that ever before. There clothes are all patches but they look healthy and happy. Well I will write more later. I hope we soon get a mail call. Tell Ann and the rest Hello. Everything is fine here. Write soon. Dale.†The letter is in fine condition. hardcover books

New/Sealed; lower corner of box is dented & creasing. pictorial box w/ one hardcover & one softcover book. 1 compact disc. One of Joseph Cornell's favorite pastimes was to meander through the used bookstalls of lower Manhattan sorting through old books magazines postcards photos and other ephemera in search of items to spark his creative impulses. Sometime in the early 1930s he came upon the Journal d'Agriculture Practique Volume 21 1911 a voluminous handbook of advice for farmers. Though he was very much an urban creature he adored French culture of that period and the book was filled with charming black and white engraving and photographs of pigs horses vegetables and farm machinery. Over time Cornell altered and reinvented many of the pages in the Journal. He inserted collages photomontages and occasional drawings; he crossed out words in the text and made French puns with others. Hand-colored engravings cutouts and lift-ups intricately transport the reader from page to page. The dazzling elegance of Cornell's work on the Journal has rarely been viewed. It was discovered in his basement studio soon after his death in 1972 and is now in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Due to its fragility the work is not well known even among Cornell scholars. Now in a unique venture sixty of the most extraordinary pages have been re-created in virtual facsimile with cutouts glue-ons and other unique handmade details. Included in a specially designed box are a DVD of the entire work including pop-up commentaries and a volume of illustrated essays on the Journal and Cornell's artistic practice. 103 illustrations--Amazon.
