Noteworthy for its call for a resurrection of the same two-front military alliance which was marshalled against Germany in the Great War. The following year 'Foreign Affairs Quarterly' published a review of this book, endorsing this policy. - Mike King. The purpose of the present work is to provide a remedy for the present perilous impasse before it is too late to avert disaster." - from dust jacket. 1937374289Boston: Houghton Mifflin 1937. Second American Edition. 297pp. frontispiece. 1 vols. 8vo. Light brown cloth with title printed in red on front cover and spine. Fine in publisher's lightly chipped dust jacket with minor wear. Second American Edition. 297pp. frontispiece. 1 vols. 8vo. A scarce second American edition of Hitler's autobiography and political manifesto in one of the best examples we've seen of the rare dust jacket that elicited an official protest from the German government.

Despite condemnation of its first American edition from Jewish American groups Houghton Mifflin risked the publication of a second edition lowering the retail price from $3.00 to $2.50 and issuing a newly designed dust jacket. The dust jacket is illustrated with the color scheme of the Weimar Republic and includes a provocative quote from journalist Dorothy Thompson. The design drew a swift formal protest from the German government who demanded that it be replaced by a dust jacket approved by the original German publisher Eher Verlag. Houghton Mifflin refused the request.

American journalist and radio broadcaster Dorothy Thompson was the first American journalist expelled from Nazi Germany in 1934 for her depcition of Hitler in her book I Saw Hitler! 1932 Farrar and Rinehart. Her expulsion order was hand delivered by a Gestapo agent and gave her 24 hours to leave the country. Her quote on the back of the dust jacket reads in part: "As a liberal democrat I deprecate every idea in this book. But it is not the function of liberals and democrats to live in a world of illusions."

In 1939 Reynal & Hitchcock published the unabridged edition but by then the rest of the world was already at war. Single sheet of stout card measuring approx. 4.5 x 7.5 inches (12.0 x 19.0 cms), obverse with gilt edges printed with the insignia of 'Admiral Inspector of the Fleet' in gilt and black and seasonal text in black; reverse blank, the whole housed in custom-made solander case. The seasonal text, SIGNED BY DONITZ IN BLUE INK , reads 'Grossadmiral Donitz dankt fur die guten Wunsche zum Weihachtsfest und zum neuen jahr und erwidert sie herzlich'. Grossadmiral Karl Donitz (1871-1980), German naval leader and Hitler's successor, commanded the Kriegsmarine during the latter half of WWII and is remembered particularly for his promotion of the U-boat offensive. He also served as Reichspraesident following Hitler's suicide in April 1945. Having authorised the German surrender he became a prisoner-of-war of the British and was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment for war crimes (primarily for ordering unrestricted submarine warfare). Following his release from Spandau in October 1956, Donitz's reputation underwent a degree of rehabilitation and he took considerable pains to answer correspondence and to provide autographs when required (including a facsimile for historians and collectors of the Articles of Surrender which he co-signed with Montgomery). HOWEVER, DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY DONITZ DURING THE WAR YEARS ARE SCARCE.

1938344H4441London: Friends of Europe. Fair. 1938. Reprint. Pamphlet. 21 pages. 21 x 14 cm. Opens with a highly informative five-page Foreword by the Duchess of Atholl M.P. the first female Scottish Member of Parliament. She provides details of the publishing and distribution history of Mein Kampf to-date and possible reasons why its content has remained relatively unknown for so long by non-German speakers. In particular she expresses her disdain for the 'severe expurgation' of the October 1933 English version entitled My Struggle. The following fourteen pages consist of quotes from a 1936 edition of Mein Kampf which she refers to as the Nazi Bible in which Hitler sets forth his views on foreign policy. These quotes are grouped under the following headings: German Arms and Methods; A Pan-German Policy; The Conquest of Territories - Old and New; Alliances Essential for the Overthrow of France; Views on Peace and Pacifism. Reprint of the 1936 first edition published by the Friends of Europe an organization which claimed to offer "reliable information on the racial ideas the religious struggle the new militarism new education and foreign policy in Nazi Germany." - last leaf.
