The introduction states that "Until now the only version of Mein Kampf in English has been a condensation of the complete book published in 1933 containing less than half of the total text." This was the first complete English translation of Mein Kampf. Passages that had been omitted from other abridged editions have been marked throughout by the publishers with printed black lines. Langer Walter Millis Roul de Roussy de Sales and George N. Shuster. Hitler didn't want this book published outside of Germany. Mein Kampf is a 1925 autobiographical and political manifesto by Adolf Hitler the leader of the Nazi Party. The book outlines many of Hitler's political beliefs his political ideology and his future plans for Germany and the world. Volume 1 of Mein Kampf was published in 1925 and Volume 2 in 1926. Emil Maurice SS member No. 2 was prominent in early transcription then most of the editing was done by Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess. Hitler began Mein Kampf while imprisoned at Landsberg Prison following his failed coup in Munich in November 1923 and trial in February 1924 for high treason in which he received a sentence of five years in fortress confinement Festungshaft. Although he received many visitors initially he soon devoted himself entirely to the book. As he continued he realized that it would have to be a two-volume work. The governor of the prison noted at the time that "Hitler hopes the book will run into many editions thus enabling him to fulfill his financial obligations and to defray the expenses incurred at the time of his trial. Hitler spent over a year incarcerated and had the first volume published the summer after his release. After slow initial sales the book became a bestseller in Germany following Hitler's rise to power in 1933. After Hitler's death copyright of Mein Kampf along with other Nazi assets was given to the state government of Bavaria which refused to allow any copying or printing of the book in Germany. In 2016 following the expiry of the copyright held by the Bavarian government Mein Kampf was republished in Germany for the first time since 1945. In Mein Kampf Hitler used the main thesis of "the Jewish peril" which posits a Jewish conspiracy to gain world leadership. The narrative describes the process by which he became increasingly antisemitic and militaristic especially during his years in Vienna. He speaks of not having met a Jew until he arrived in Vienna and that at first his attitude was liberal and tolerant. When he first encountered the antisemitic press he says he dismissed it as unworthy of serious consideration. Later he accepted the same antisemitic views which became crucial to his program of national reconstruction of Germany. Mein Kampf has also been studied as a work on political theory. The Országos Magyar Zsidó Segíto Akció (National Hungarian Jewish Aid Association; OMZSA) was a general assistance organization for the large Budapest community. The OMZSA was involved with cultural, legal, and economic battles on behalf of the (religious) Jewish Budapest community. For example, a series of drawings by the artist Imre Amos (1907-1945) entitled Zsidó ünnepek (Jewish Holidays) , representing the Jewish holidays in the shadow of annihilation, became emblematic for Hungarian Jewry. (The series appeared in 150 copies published in 1940 by the Országos Magyar Zsidó Segito Akció [National Hungarian Jewish Aid Action]. ) (YIVO encyclopedia) . According to OCLC, four issues of the yearbook are known to exist (the earliest issue is titled OMZSA Naptár OMZSA Calendar) . This issue contains a calendar of the days and holidays for the year (In Hungarian and Yiddish) , and extensive literary (poems, letters, short stories) and journalistic pieces by dozens of writers and editors from the Budapest community. For many of these authors, this would be their last published work. [T]he Germans occupied the country on 19 March 1944, Gestapo chief Adolf Eichmann set up his SS command in Budapest, and the Budapest Jewish Council was established. What had been an extended process of stigmatization, ghettoization, deportation, and murder elsewhere was greatly concentrated and executed with great efficiency and speed in Hungary. The deportation and gassing of almost 440, 000 provincial Jews at Auschwitz-Birkenau began in mid-May and was swiftly accomplished by July as a result of full cooperation of the Hungarian authorities. Only intense diplomatic pressure threatening harsh postwar retribution caused Regent Horthy to call a halt to the deportations on 6 July, giving Budapest Jewry a temporary reprieve. In Budapest, a series of measures increasingly placed limitations on Jews who remained in the capital. Restrictions were placed on using the public transport; later telephones, bicycles, and cars were confiscated, and an evening curfew was imposed. From 3 April, all persons defined as Jews were obligated to wear a yellow star on their outer clothing The reverses suffered by the Germans emboldened Horthy to announce in mid-October his intention to withdraw Hungary from the war. With German backing, Ferenc Szálasi and his Arrow Cross Party seized power on 15 October. Budapests Jews were now threatened by a far more vicious regime whose radical antisemitic ideology was wholly in tune with Hitlers apocalyptic vision. Forced death marches began on 20 October and along with German deportations, affected some 75, 000 Budapest Jews. The city rapidly descended into chaos as roving Arrow Cross bands combed the streets rounding up Jews. This autobiographical manifesto by Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler describes the process by which Hitler became anti-Semitic and outlines his political ideology and future plans for Germany. Hitler began writing Mein Kampf while imprisoned following his failed Putsch in Munich in November 1923. Eventually Hitler realized it would have to be a two-volume work; the first volume was published in 1925 and the second in 1926. After slow initial sales the book became a bestseller in Germany following Hitler's rise to power in 1933. E. T. S. Dugdale began writing an English abridgment of the two volume German edition of Mein Kampf in 1931 but finding a publisher proved difficult. Houghton Mifflin secured the rights to the Dugdale abridgment on July 29 1933. The first print run of only 7603 copies priced at $3.00 met with moderate commercial success but elicited condemnation from Jewish American groups across the United States. Houghton Mifflin decided to risk a second edition only 3497 copies with a retail price of $2.50 and a new dust jacket design which resulted in a diplomatic protest from the German government demanding that it be replaced with an approved design from the German publisher Eher Verlag but Houghton Mifflin refused. The dustjacket for the second edition had panels of black red and yellow and a quotation from Dorothy Thompson. The Nazi government objected to the black-red-yellow color scheme which was emblematic of the liberal German revolutions of 1848–49 and the Weimar Republic while the Nazis had returned to the black white red emblems of the German Empire. Thompson's quotation was also objected to as she had been expelled from the Reich in 1934 after writing unflattering accounts of Hitler. James J. Barnes and Patience P. When her husband died in 1960 she married Joseph Alsop the journalist the following year. In the 1970s she embarked on her own literary career producing "To Marietta From Paris: 1945-1960" 1974 followed by "Lady Sackville: A Biography" 1978 "Yankees at the Court: The First Americans in Paris" 1982 and "The Congress Dances: Vienna 1814-1815" 1984. Her Georgetown homes both with and without Alsop hosted dignitaries publishers and a variety of interesting people during the 1960s and 1970s including such luminaries as John F. First French edition of Mein Kampf illegally published by right wing eccentric and Nazi sympathizer Fernand Sorlot who published the work without having first secured publishing rights. When Hitler discovered that an unauthorized version of Mein Kampf had been published in France his lawyers sued forcing Sorlot to withdraw the book from the market. Hitler's lawsuit against Sorlot was driven more out of an attempt to conceal his plans for war in Europe than copyright infringement the 1925 and 1926 German editions of Mein Kampf contained numerous references to France as "the irreconcilable mortal enemy" and "the mortal enemy of our nation". Hitler and his advisors feared that publication of the work in France would alert the French people to their designs on the country and Europe at large. This edition was preceded by 25 copies hors de commerce numbered I - XXV followed by this trade edition unnumbered but likely printed in a small run with this copy marked Exemplaire No. 918 in pencil on the limitation page. This is a VG copy overall with crimping to spine tips with minor creasing to upper corners of text block throughout; small stain to title page with light soiling to page ends but a sound copy overall of a scarce book</p> Nouvelles Editions Latines hardcover
