A crisp copy in original state of the terms of the orders of council preventing neutral shipping trading with Continental Europe during the continuing hostilities of the Napoleonic Wars. By 1807 the conflict between England and France had degenerated into a war of economic retribution as each side attempted to starve the other into submission. Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar in October 1805 had given Britain mastery of the seas but Napoleon still controlled much of continental Europe. Lacking a fleet that could directly threaten Britain Napoleon implemented the Continental System a pair of decrees November 21 1806 and December 17 1807 that prohibited British trade with the Continent and threatened seizure of any neutral vessels found trading with England. The British responded by issuing the present orders of council November 11 18 and 25 and December 18 1807 that imposed a counter-blockade on Napoleonic Europe requiring non-partisan vessels to call at a British port for inspection and to pay duties and seek licenses there for trade with the enemy. In the midst of that economic vice was the neutral United States. The British embargo severely impeded American commercial activity in the Atlantic and was ultimately a primary factor in the commencement of the Anglo-American War of 1812. It contains the Medieval laws of Wisby the laws of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V of 1551 the laws of Philip II of Spain of 1563 including articles on the equipage of ships the rights of sailors and merchants and insurance the laws of the Hanse and the regulations of the city of Amsterdam including regulations for voyages to Rotterdam Utrecht Antwerp Rouen London and Hamburg. It was first published in 1532 followed by numerous editions well into the 18th century. It is followed by a merchant's guide on the insurance of ships and merchandise at sea by Quintyn Weytsen here enlarged and corrected by the Dutch legal scholar Simon van Leeuwen. The third part contains the insurance regulations of various Dutch merchant cities the fourth part is a list of import taxes of various goods and the fifth part gives the regulations for ships pilots.Ad 2: Fourth edition of Van Glins's commentary on the maritime laws of Philip II of Spain of 1563. It was first published in 1665 and "remained the standard work on the Dutch maritime law for a long time" "Bleef langen tijd het standaardwerk over het Nederlandsche zeerecht" NNBW. It gives extensive commentary on all the articles from the laws of Philip II of Spain concerning the equipage of ships the rights of sailors and merchants and insurance as issued in ad 1.With an embossed library and deaccession stamp on title-page.
