1887007655Poughkeepsie NY 1887. Book. Very Good. Soft cover. Signed by Authors. 5" x 7 3/4". Flexible leather album front cover stamped in gilt with title "Autographs" surrounded by gilt flourishes spine decorated in gilt all edges gilt. 98 pp 19 of them blank leaving 79 with manuscript and 78 signatures 4 with writing in Japanese as well as English 3 with full page calligraphic drawings of birds with 38 photographs in the form of stamps including one oversize stamp measuring 1 3/4" x 2 1/4" of Mrs. C.C. Gaines wife of the President of Eastman College the other stamps all measure 7/8" x 1". The rest of the stamps are males either students or faculty. The photographic stamps were done by C. H. Gallup of Poughkeepsie NY. The album belonged to student Clif. J. Prosser. Very Good the leather rubbed at edges rear leather cover about half loosened from the board light soiling. A wonderful early Eastman Business College autograph album perhaps from the beginning of the use of photographic stamps. Paperback

One albumen photo sized 6 x 8 in. mounted on 10 x 12 in. beige studio board manuscript pencil & ink annotations on verso minor age toning to fore-edges very minor edgewear still an excellent crisp image. An exceptional image depicting logging camp family excursion setting on a horse-drawn wooden sledge to cross a think wood-plank bridge featuring a consistent raised center ridge to keep the sledge centered. Logging was encouraged at the time by the demand for timber from the Snoqualmie Hop Ranch or Snoqualmie Logging Co. Mills in order to feed the massive all underground Snoqualmie Falls power plant. Unfortunately the project displaced a sacred site for the Snoqualmie Tribe or Sduk-al-bixw. [n.p.], unknown
1884008298Philadelphia: John C. Clark & Sons 1884. Fine. 2 documents printed by John C. Clark & Sons Philadelphia both printed in red and black and folded. On 2 May 1884 John K. Cuming of Philadelphia merchant mortgaged a three-story brick house at 1736 Grove St. Philadelphia for $900 to be paid within three years. Signed by John K. Cuming witnesses Harry B. Yerger and Frank A. Brunner notary public Harry B. Yerger with his stamp and Philadelphia County Recorders of Deeds John O'Connell and John Virdin. The note of satisfaction on 16 Oct. 1901 was signed by Kate E. Scott. John K. Cuming 1830-1915 was a prominent Philadelphian who served on the Select Council the Citizens' Municipal Association and the Board of City Trusts and was president of the Tenth National Bank for many years. Near Fine. 5 handwritten letters to William Ward 1873-1879 regarding the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad which existed from 1872 to 1885; it was succeeded by the Philadelphia Midland Railroad. William Ward was one of the organizers of the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad and in 1874 was the president and treasurer pro tem. Letters #1 and #2 Sept. 5 and Dec. 5 1873 are from Jos. H. McKeehan an attorney in Philadelphia who is writing about deliquent subscribers to the railroad. Letter #3 Dec. 18 1873 is from the Village Record a newspaper in West Chester Pa. with a copy of the advertisement that ran in the paper listing the dates that instalments from railroad subscribers were due in 1872. Letter #4 Nov. 26 1875 is from John Smith of Ridley Park about a plan to petition to vacate a street and public ground adjoining Mr. Bartol's purchase. Letter #5 Sept. 8 1879 from the superintendant of the Government Paper Mill in Dalton Mass. complaining about the appointment of counters and watchmen at the mill presumably to Ward as a congressman. William Ward 1837-1895 studied law and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1859. He opened a practice in Chester; was involved in real estate and banking; served as a member of the Chester city council and as city solicitor; and was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Delaware County in the 45th 46th and 47th Congresses 1877-1883. Announcement of a meeting of the Manufacturers of Delaware County to be held on Nov. 20 1875 "to obtain relief from the burdensome and unequal taxation suffered" by those manufacturers. By order of Samuel Riddle president of the group. Pencil notations on the back headed "Riddle mill burned." #2-3: 26 x 21 cm. Printed notice dated Nov. 29 1875 from a committee of Manufacturers of Delaware County urging individual manufacturers to explain to their county assessor "the great depreciation in the value of machinery since the last triennial assessment." The committee are Amos Gartside James Stephens and Abram Blakeley. Includes a list of assessors of Delaware County for 1876. There are 2 copies of this one with an ink note reading: "Jno. R. Rhodes." #4: 21 x 13 cm. Printed letter dated May 6 1876 from William Ward "Acting for Committee of Delaware County Manufacturers." Ward who represented Pennsylvania in Congress from 1877 to 1883 requests the recipient to have the "enclosed memorial" signed by all employees "both male and female" to be used during the debate on the Morrison Free Trade Bill. #5: 21 x 25 cm. Printed letter dated Jan. 29 1877 from Amos Gartside and James Stephens on behalf of the Committee of Delaware County Manufacturers. To manufacturers urging them to talk to the county assessors in their districts about the burden put on Delaware County manufacturers by the "unfair and unequal valuation and taxation of machinery." Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: all are lightly creased; closed 2-cm. tear from edgeof #1; several closed tears of less than 1 cm. from edges; minor loss near upper edge of #1; slight discoloration on #5. Folio 15 x 10 inches half leather buff boards 375 2 pp. Fair to good copy solidly bound but boards rubbed and worn leather dry and with loss contents have light library marks bookplates on pastedown barcode on rear flyleaf blindstamp on title page pages show tanning and foxing but usable copy. The Sixth U.S. Census of 1840 was notable as the first to gather social statistics in addition to basic population counts including data on literacy education occupations and mental health. It marked the government’s earliest effort to measure the nation’s social and economic conditions not just its numbers. However the census became infamous for its errors in reporting insanity rates which falsely indicated that free Black people in the North suffered mental illness at much higher rates than enslaved people in the South. Pro-slavery advocates used these figures to argue that enslavement was beneficial while abolitionists denounced the results as fraudulent and demanded correction. The controversy made the 1840 census both a statistical milestone and a cautionary example of how inaccurate data could be weaponized in political debates. Printed by Thomas Allen hardcover

A document produced by the Society for Mitigating and Gradually Abolishing the State of Slavery throughout the British Dominions better known as the Anti-Slavery Society. The group was founded in London in 1823 by a group of politicians philanthropists and businessmen including William Wilberforce Joseph Sturge and Zachary Macaulay. The document discusses the horrors of enslavement—even unfavorably comparing the British colonies’ conditions with those in the US—and decries the fact that after the 1807 Slave Trade Act essentially nothing more had been done to put “an end to a condition of society which so grievously outrages every feeling of humanityâ€. Light vertical and horizontal center folds three short tears at the horizontal fold near fine with a contemporary drawing of a few survey lines and diagrams very lightly sketched in ink and pencil on the final blank page. The Society states its case against slavery in the Colonies of Great Britain where "there are at this moment upwards of 800000 human beings in a state of degrading personal slavery." It provides a brief but detailed description of "the immoral inhuman and unjust" nature of the slave trade and of the absolute power of slave owners.
