Leather is chipped with some loss at both spine extremities; board edges and corners are rubbed. Former ownership inscription of W. J. Daniel Elizabethville Dauphin Co. PA" on front pastedown dated 1915. Front endpapers show soiling and a stain that bleeds through lightly onto the first plate. 14 pp. index illus. w/ 6 hand-colored plates No. 1 shows approx. 1" square of loss to blank portion of page. "Doctors had written about the cave before but with Charles W. Wright M.D. of the Kentucky School of Medicinein Louisville a new era of Mammoth Cave medical authors began.Wright was present in Mammoth Cave during the first descent of a deep pit known as the Maelstrom and he was one of the first explorers of Diamond Caverns. His book The Mammoth Cave of Kentucky was published in 1858 and again in 1859. In 1860 he revised and enlarged it. As A Guide Manual to the Mammoth Cave the 1860 edition became the standard reference book about the cave until it was replaced nine years later by Dr. Binkerd's book. Even after Binkerd's book was replaced by Dr. Forwood's book Wright's Guide Manual was still in demand. It was republished in 1870 and again in 1875." A tight and nice first edition of this first important history of the state rebound 1968 in library buckram. Second state with "1818" in title rather than "1814." Noted for its coverage of such events as the Black Hawk War the early Mormon history including the death of Joseph Smith and the murder of abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy in Alton this discreet ex-library copy with very few and mostly-removed markings hails from the Black Hawk War city of Galena in northwest Illinois where Ford himself briefly resided.
