Moncrieff . . .". The final page contains information which indicates that this was an exhibit in an action brought by Grant Richards against the distinguished bookseller Bertram Dobell and this document is accompanied by a manuscript 2pp. fol. folded prob. secretarial hand "draft Affidavit of Defendant Dobell". The case is Grant Richards plaintiff and Bertram Dobell and Alexander Moring defendants. Dobell initially gives details of his business two premises "Publisher Bookseller and Dealer in Autographs" length of career etc. He says he bought some letters in good faith from his co-defendent Alexander Moring who himself had bought the letters along with the rest of Grant Richards' business. He did not think that the letters had content which would provoke legal action and he has sent 3000 catalogues out in GB and the USA attracting "considerable expense" and perhaps the expense and trouble of getting sold letters back from customers if the Court so decided. His reputation is also an issue. Note: Grant Richards originated the World Classics series but it appears that Moring bought the copyright before Frowde of the OUP. The letters discussed above are apparently now in Princeton University Library. 7 October 1905. hardcover

"Little is known about the life of the Parisian publisher of Le Garde-meuble Désiré Guilmard c. 1810-c.1885 except that he founded the publishing firm of D. Guilmard in 1839. Because his name appears as the "delineator" of the majority of the furniture plates in Le Garde-meuble many historians presumed he was a furniture designer. However he is not known to have had a furniture shop nor are there any signed examples of his furniture extant. We do know that Guilmard was closely connected to the Parisian design community and through his numerous publications see below became an influential purveyor of taste. He was also an exceptionally able businessman who promoted French furniture and design during a fifty-year period of rapidly changing taste" Smithsonian. D.Guilmard hardcover
171421230London 1714. Broadsheet. 1p. plus printed docket title on verso. Disbound. Small folio. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Mild foxing. An early British petitionary leaflet calling for greater enforcement of customs laws for imported goods. The author charges that most consignments of foreign goods are now being made to "Naturalized Foreigners and Unfreemen" who are not under the same obligations as Freemen who state in their oath "not to Colour of Cover the Goods of Aliens." If "no Remedey be given" it is argued "all Persons will be discouraged from taking their Freedoms and few will be left of Substance to perform the necessary Service in the Government of London." The document is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature which first began proliferating during the major changes in British government in the mid-1710s. ESTC records four copies at the British Library Oxford the National Library of Wales and the California State Library.

Hanson 1980. unknown
