191074949Philadelphia: A.F.C. Bateman Company ca. 1910. Original furniture salesperson catalog with 52 original photographs of offered products as well as many half-tones to fill it out. Period string-tied black cloth album 11 x 7 inches with printed paper cover label. Edge chipping to some pages and label on front with a piece missing. A few leaves at the fron have come loose but are still snug. Overall a very interesting album and it appears that no photographs have fallen out.Even though the A.F.C. Bateman Company is hard to track down one gets the idea that they were quite influential in their day as many current furniture companies still offer such things as a "Bateman Chair" etc. This particular catalog is focused entirely upon chairs. The label on front reads "Antiques and Reproductions" and judging from the photographs these are all reproductions of antique chairs. Many of the photographs have manuscript numbers or names. Many of the half-tones are of real antique American chairs and presumably the company would point them out and offer to have them made as well. A.F.C. Bateman Company hardcover

Business grew at such a rapid rate that they soon had to obtain possession of the other half of the store which they succeeded in doing. When they enlarged their store a large stock of new goods was added to the already magnificent stock. They now have about $35000 stock on hand of the finest goods in the clothing and dry goods line in the state" San Bernardino Courier January 1 1892. Sadly we cannot determine who the printer was. Published in the Washington Historical Quarterly these charts trace the growth and economic impact of the Russian fur trade from the 18th Century into the 19th Century. At the time Golder was unable to find one single source of the information so he created his own charts and they chronicle the growth and impact of the fur trade in Alaska breaking down not only all the vessels navigators and owners but also the types of cargo including beaver fox sea otter otter tails sea bears sea lions whale mustaches walrus tusks blue arctic fox and their values. The two additional typescript tables separate out the furs from the Chelichof and Golikofs Co. i.e. Shelikhov-Golikov Co. from 1786-1797 notorious for their massacres of indigenous Alutiiqs in 1784 on Kodiak Island known as the Awa’uq Massacre allowing the Russian Co. control over the island. Directly afterwards Golder spent the next decade actively working in Russian Archives during the Russian Revolution and eventually produced his Guide to Materials for American History in Russian Archives and built the massive Slavic language collection at the Hoover War History Collection. 19257016Milwaukee: the company 1925. Trade catalogue bound with three brass fasteners 28 x 22.5 cm. forty-two original color-printed cellophane or polyethylene food wrappers mostly for meat bacon or sausage or candy products. Brand names and designs vary greatly. Some of the samples bare the Milprint Protecto-Pack or Millprint Econo-Wrap slug. "Milprint Inc. was founded by the brothers Max T. "Popsy" Heller and William "Billy" Heller as the Milwaukee Printing Company in 1899. Beginning in 1908 they succeeded in developing printing techniques for flexible media used in commercial packaging at first glassine paper and then cellophane foil and polyethylene. The Heller brothers were able to get in at the beginnings of the mass marketing of consumer goods when individually sealed wrappings implied safety and purity. Their paper wrappings practically made the individual nickel candy bar possible and the firm dominated the candy wrapper market at an early date. Its in-house artists and designers advised clients on the most effective way to package their products. The Heller brothers also developed "Trans-Vision" a means of depicting complex objects in peel-away layers on transparent film whose most common use was probably depicting the anatomy of the human body in textbooks. William Heller sold Milprint to Philip Morris Incorporated in 1957" Hagley Museum Finding aid for the Leonard Walton collection of Milprint materials. Some leaves at the rear show signs that some samples were removed and some adhesive corner marks to leaves otherwise in remarkable condition for a collection of cellophane meat and candy wrappers with all samples bright and clean.
