Paris s. d. ca 1840 14.50 x 18.50 cm un panorama sous reliure binding: 14.5 x 18.5 cm / panorama: 206 m 80 inches A very rare first edition of 15 lithographed views in bistre tint mounted in an accordion pleat forming a panorama of 6.75 ft and showing the Parisian procession of the return of Napoleon's mortal remains his ""ashes"" used here as a metaphor since he was not cremated. The parade started from the Arc de Triomphe to his resting place in Invalides. In the lower margin the caption presents the different groups forming the procession: Ajaccio delegation Paris Municipal Council Prince of Joinville Commission of Saint-Helena.in the centre of the panorama stands the spectacular funeral car. Without mention of the publisher this impressive document was undoubtedly printed by Aubert famous publisher of Parisian panoramas published during the same era and also illustrated by Adrien Provost. Publisher's half cloth black Bradel binding goffered silk boards framed with double gilt fillets the first with the gilt title convoi de l'Empereur stamped in the centre. In the distance is seen in the mist and the sunlight against the grey and russet background of the trees in the Champs-élysées beyond the great white phantom-like statues a kind of golden mountain slowly moving. All that can be distinguished of it as yet is a sort of luminous glistening which makes now stars now lightening sparkle over the whole surface of the car. A mighty roar follows this apparition. It would seem as though this car draws after it the acclamation of the whole city as a torch draws after it its smoke. Victor Hugo Choses Vues 15 décembre 1840. Funérailles de l'Empereur. Mercer's ‘Journal’ is an important source for historians of the Waterloo campaign as well as a detailed description of the landscape and people of Belgium and France in the early 19th century. It is one of the few accounts of the period written by an artillery officer. Mercer’s journals were kept throughout the campaign of 1815 but were not published until 1870 after his death. The work was compiled and written in its finished form some 30 years earlier from the original notes Mercer wrote contemporaneously with additions and verifications from correspondence and other sources. It covers the period from April 1815 to January 1816. Although he eventually rose to the rank of general his fame is as commander of the British G Troop Royal Horse Artillery in the thick of the fighting at the Battle of Waterloo. It is also notable for its lengthy descriptions of the countryside and its people.<br> In spite of his position with the British Army the work is usually found in 20th Century editions in French. Its historical value in the English-speaking nations was largely overlooked till its rediscovery with a Praeger edition in 1970. William Blackwood and Sons hardcover

After being commissioned as a sous-lieutenant in 1806 at the age of 17 Chambure served in Prussia and Poland where he was wounded. In 1809 he fought in Spain where he was wounded at the Siege of Saragossa. Later that year he was promoted to lieutenant; the next year hebecame an aide-de-camp to his brother-in-law General Reynaud and he served at the Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo. His next major action came in May of 1811 when he fought at the Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro where his right shoulder was shattered. In 1812 he returned to the army and in February of 1813 he was promoted to captain and joined General Rapp's staff. Rapp was in charge of defending Danzig and Chambure served in the defense once the Coalition powers laid siege to it. He promptly made a name for himself by leading a company of volunteers known as the Infernal Company or the Lost Children in brilliant actions behind enemy lines but in December 1813 they were forced to surrender Danzig and Chambure was taken prisoner. After returning to France in 1814 after Napoleon's abdication Chambure became an aide-de-camp to General Reynaud again. When Napoleon left exile and resumed power for the Hundred Days Chambure rallied to him. In 1820 he received a pension as captain but in 1830 he resumed his military career working for Marshal Soult. The 46 fine illustrations in this volume were engraved by Fauchery Alfred et Tony Johannot and others after designs by Devéria Steuben Scheffer Lami and others: ""Our first idea was to erect a monument which could attest to foreign nations the superiority of our school of engraving and ensure for each of our artists the degree of renown deserved for his talent"" Chambure's foreword translated. Many other records are kept such as lists of family members dates of death arrests and convictions etc. The first book measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 inches. The page cover is worn. Some pages are loose and some pages have been torn out. With 199 pages it is approximately 90% complete. The second book is 7 1/2 inches by 5 inches and has 40 pages. This too is about 90% complete. Entries in both appear to be in two different handwriting styles. Napoleon Lambert was born in Marieville Quebec in 1862. He moved with his family to Taunton MA when he was 10. He moved back to Canada in 1875 but returned to live in Central Falls RI in 1883. He served as Chief until August 1907. He died in Dec 1919 at the age of 57. Not accepted. Time 1:30 PM Oct 22 1903. The second part of the volume is a long poem/prose piece that may or may not have been written by him. It is in English and French which reflects his bilingual background but the 'hand' is quite different. The second volume is an address book that has been used as a journal. A third of it 46 pages is an alphabetical listing of individuals and their offences many repeated: "Joe Burns: o sentenced by Judge Wilber to serve 18 months in Prov County Jail for the larceny of one lot brass worth $100.00 from the Electroletic Copper Co". Aug 12 1904 o "Larceny 30 days Oct 31 1906 Richard O'Neil; o arrested for drunkenness released" Nov 12 1896 o "Committed to the State Farm for 6 months Charge: Vagrant" Nov 27 1897 "Committed to Jail for 90 days on a charge of larceny of a dog" Dec 8 1898; "Terry Nika o arrested on a charge of assault with a stone upon Stanislaw Prasccrinski on Jan 18-05 Waived examination and was bound over to State Farm. Mar 05 Placed on probation and paid the costs" Jan 26 1905 "o Fined $2 & costs for an assault upon George Belisle on April 15-05 Paid" April 19 1905. The remaining section has had a number of pages torn out. On the 25 or so pages again is a prose piece mostly in French and again in another 'hand'. The volume contains a fair amount of genealogical information about his extended family. For a social historian especially on focusing on life in the Providence-Pawtucket part of Rhode Island this is an excellent reference to crime and punishment at the turn of the last century. Lambert joined the police force right at its inception rose to be Chief and served for a total of 12 years. His journal offers a unique look into an aspect of community life that is often not very visible.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF UNITED STATES PROVIDENCE COUNTY NAPOLEON LAMBERT CENTRAL FALLS RI PROVIDENCE RI RHODE ISLAND LATE 19TH CENTURY 1890s PROGRESSIVE ERA POLICEMEN POLICING IN THE LATE 1800'S COMMON CRIMES IN A SMALL COMMUNITY URBAN HISTORY CENTRAL FALLS POLICE DEPARTMENT CANADIAN AMERICANS FRENCH CANADIANS IN THE U.S. CENTRAL FALLS CHIEF OF POLICE URBAN POLICE CRIME IN 19TH CENTURY NEW ENGLAND CRIME AND PUNISHMENT IN RHODE ISLAND LAW ENFORCEMENT IN LATE 19TH CENTURY 19TH CENTURY CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN NEW ENGLAND RHODE ISLAND GENEALOGY AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown
1815192029London: Printed for J. and E. Wallis; J. Wallis Sidmouth 17 August 1815. Published two months before Napoleon landed on the island Second edition published nine days after the first. Its publication was likely spurred by Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo on 18 June; he arrived in Jamestown on 15 October 1815. We have traced only three institutional copies: the first edition at the State Library Darmstadt and Yale University the second edition at the University of Oxford. At the head of this broadside is an engraving of St Helena viewed from the north-west captioned with 12 locations of interest such as fortifications and the government house. The text details pertinent information about the island such as its longitude and latitude defensive formations climate and weather population and endemic diseases. It is painted in a picturesque manner: "St. Helena is gifted with considerable attractions and advantages both local and natural. The climate seems to be peculiarly adapted to the constitution of Europeans of whom many have resided here for a long series of years without suffering any malady". Napoleon remained on the island until his death on 5 May 1821. The engraving is slightly different to other examples dated 8 August 1815 with ships in different positions. Broadside 502 x 364 mm black letterpress on one side only. Hand-coloured engraved illustration at head. Edges a little dust soiled nicked and creased a few tidemarks on verso: a very good copy. unknown
