Francois Marquis de Chasseloup-Laubat 1754-1833 was a French general who fought in the French Revolution and was chief of engineers in the army of Italy under Napoleon. He led the seiges of Maastricht Milan and Mantua. He reconstructed the defences of northern Italy during the peace of 1800-1805 during which time he constructed the great fortress of Alessandria on the Tanaro. He then served in the Polish and German campaigns where he directed the siege of Danzig and reconstructed many fortresses. Napoleon praised Chasseloup as one of his best generals.<br /> The detailed plates at the end of the work give plans for cannon and fortifications as well as designs for a portable bridge a well a sawmill and other instruments of war. <br /> Scarce; OCLC locates only 5 copies. A crisp lovely set bound by Best & Co. in full crushed forest green morocco. Top edge gilt gilt dentelles gilt devices to boards patterned endpapers and most volumes with silk ribbons some of these are frayed. Each volume is numbered 722 of 1000 limited sets which were issued for the US and the UK. Overall near fine with even darkening to the spines though the gilt remains notably bright. Occasional nicks and scuffs to the extremities but no notable defects. The set is often found broken up into its three parts; presumably by unknowing collectors or dealers who fail to realize that all three elements were issued together. As such a pleasing complete set and the only in a full leather binding that we could trace in recent commerce. Depending on the circumstances shipping/postage may be significantly extra for this large heavy set. Grolier Society hardcover

Some rubbing to the boards but a very good attractive set now housed in a maroon cloth slipcase. FIRST EDITION of this revealing portrait of Napoleon by his surgeon and close confidant O'Meara with engraved frontispiece portrait. O'Meara was surgeon on board the Bellerophon when it received Napoleon in 1815. Bonaparte was attracted by the doctor's ability to speak Italian and when his own surgeon declined to follow him into exile he asked that O'Meara accompany him to St. Helena as his medical attendant. The admiralty readily permitted O'Meara to join the emperor hoping that he would serve as a sort of spy but O'Meara alienated himself from the admiralty and became partisan on behalf of Napoleon and was eventually dismissed from his post. His account of Napoleon in exile was tremendously popular and quickly went through five editions and two editions of the French translation. Writ of Excommunication of the Authors Executors and Instigators of the Usurpation of Rome and of the States belonging to the Holy See issued in 1809 during the conflict between the Papacy and the French Empire following Napoleon Bonaparte's seizure of the Papal States. The document records the formal condemnation issued by the Pope after Napoleon's government annexed Rome and absorbed papal territories into the French imperial system. Beginning in 1808 French forces occupied Rome and incorporated regions of the Papal States including Urbino Ancona Macerata and Camerino into the Kingdom of Italy under Napoleon's authority. In May 1809 Napoleon formally decreed the annexation of Rome to the French Empire leaving the papacy stripped of its territorial sovereignty. The papal response was the issuance of an excommunication directed at those responsible for the usurpation of papal authority. Rare found in only 3 libraries worldwide and none in the North America as per OCLC Worldcat at the time of this writing.<br /> <br /> Pius VII. The text condemns those who "usurp encourage advise or perform" the seizure of papal territory placing the annexation of Rome within a moral and religious framework that challenged the legitimacy of Napoleonic rule over the Papal States. Although the decree clearly targeted the imperial policy responsible for the occupation Napoleon himself was not explicitly named within the text. The pamphlet circulated during a period of escalating confrontation between the French Empire and the Vatican as the papacy attempted to defend its remaining authority after the loss of its territories.<br /> <br /> The confrontation soon intensified following the issuance of the excommunication. Napoleon ordered the arrest of the Pope instructing General Étienne Radet to seize the pontiff. On the night of July 5-6 1809 French forces entered the Vatican and removed Pius VII from Rome beginning a period of captivity that lasted several years while Napoleon attempted to compel papal cooperation with imperial policy. French novelist and historian Octave Aubry was one of the five members of the Académie française elected on 1 February 1946 to replace the many vacancies left by the Nazi occupation of Europe. Aubry's fascination with history led to several historical novels. These included Louis XVII Bonaparte and Josephine The Coup d'état of Brumaire The Lost King Marie Waleska The Bed King and Gaspard Hauser. He also authored numerous scholarly books on the great historical figures of 19th century. These were Napoleon III Empress Eugenie A History of the Second Empire King of Rome The Private Life of Napoleon and French Revolution. 43719Sprig from the Willow tree which grew over the tombe of Napoleon Buonapart at St Helena." on one side 8vo. no place no date but circa Napoleon was exiled to St Helena in 1815. In mid-1817 Napoleon's health worsened. His physician Barry O'Meara diagnosed chronic hepatitis and warned Lowe that Napoleon could die from the poor climate and lack of exercise. Lowe thought O'Meara was exaggerating and dismissed him in July 1818. His health continued to worsen and in March 1821 he was confined to bed. In April he wrote two wills declaring that he had been assassinated by the "English oligarchy" that the Bourbons would fall and that his son would rule France. He died on 5th May 1821 at age 51. Napoleon was buried with military honours in the Valley of the Geraniums.Napoleon's heart and intestines were removed and sealed inside his coffin. Napoleon's penis was allegedly removed during the autopsy and sold and exhibited. In 1840 the British government gave Louis Philippe I permission to return Napoleon's remains to France. The weeping willow that shaded Napoleon's grave in the Sane Valley on St. Helena became an iconic symbol of his exile and death. Napoleon frequently rested under these trees and they became a major souvenir attraction for visitors who stripped them of branches Provenance: From a small collection of locks of Royal Hair which were all collected about between 1817 and 1820 so this much have been fairly soon after he was buried. unknown

Rare finely bound example of the Memoirs of Napoleon with a fine fore-edge painting of Napoleon on horseback leading his troops to battle. 12mo. bound in full red morocco gilt titles and tooling to the spine gilt vignettes to the front and rear panels gilt turn ins all edges gilt. In near fine condition with light rubbing. The earliest fore-edge paintings date possibly as far back as the 10th century; these earliest paintings were symbolic designs. Early English fore-edge paintings believed to date to the 14th century presented heraldic designs in gold and other colors. The first known example of a disappearing fore-edge painting where the painting is not visible when the book is closed dates from 1649. The earliest signed and dated fore-edge painting dates to 1653: a family coat of arms painted on a 1651 Bible. Around 1750 the subject matter of fore-edge paintings changed from simply decorative or heraldic designs to landscapes portraits and religious scenes usually painted in full color. Modern fore-edge painted scenes have a lot more variation as they can depict numerous subjects not found on earlier specimens. These include scenes that are erotic or they might involve scenes from novels like Jules Verne Sherlock Holmes or Dickens etc. In many cases the chosen scene will depict a subject related to the book but in other cases it did not. In one instance the same New Brunswick landscape was applied to both a Bible and to a collection of poetry and plays. The choice of scenes is made by either the artist bookseller or owner thus the variety is wide. The technique was popularized in the 18th century by John Brindley 1732-1756 publisher and bookbinder to the prince of Wales and Edwards of Halifax a distinguished family of bookbinders and booksellers. The majority of extant examples of fore-edge painting date to the late 19th and early 20th century on reproductions of books originally published in the early 19th century.
