With a lacquered engraved portrait of Louis Napoleon mounted on the centre of the lid below his coat-of-arms an eagle facing to the viewers right with the motto Vox populi vox Dei and the caption Lélu du peuple and above the total number of votes 7481231 cast for him on 21 December 1851; the portrait is surrounded by the names of all the French Departments Ain Aisne Yonne the colonies and the army each with the exact number of votes for and against him. A lacquered wooden box probably designed to contain a commemorative medal: most likely the one made by Jean Pierre Montagny 1789-1862 Réélection de Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte 21 Décembre 1851 mentioning the same number of votes and the motto La voix du peuple est la voix de Dieu Musée Carnevalet Hist. de Paris ND9217 36 mm diameter.There are also stipple- engraved roundels to be stored in the box: 32 engraved portraits maps engraved texts and parts of print series plus 69 duplicates each cut to a circular diameter mostly ca. 75-80 mm; one 60 mm; Paris 1800-1840. He was a general in the Crimea was in charge of the 1855 exhibition and at court led the Liberal opposition to the Empress Eugénie. In 1859 he married a daughter of Victor Emmanuel II and led the French forces into Tuscany where the French had planned to make him ruler. However with his liberal sympathies he refused to exert pressure on the inhabitants who preferred to join the Italian kingdom. unknown

A well preserved image that shows very handsomely. There is a bit of wear at the edges of the mounting board. AN ORIGINAL CARTE DE VISITE PHOTOGRAPH OF CHARLES-LOUIS BONAPARTE EMPEROR NAPOLEON III. This is a photograph of him taken while living in exile in England about six months prior to his death. It is likely that it was taken during the same sitting as the "last photograph" as he is wearing the same clothing with accouterments as in that well known photograph.<br> The nephew and heir of Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleon III was the Emperor of the French from 1852 to 1870 and as Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte the President of France from 1848 to 1852. He was the only president of the French Second Republic and the founder of the Second French Empire. He was the first head of state of France to hold the title of President. He would die an exile in England where he was considered a guest of Queen Victoria and became a fixture of English high-society. hardcover

In one original red grained morocco portfolio with gilt title on the front board. = This geostrategical publication consists of 17 very large detailed maps described in the Table and an 18th map which is related but apparently published slightly later. The maps cover a period during which Napolean was expanding his empire aggressively except for the year 1808 when all was quiet on all fronts. Although sometimes dated as published in 1844 first mention of these maps as printed and published is in 1841. The 17 maps are titled as follows: 1. Carte de l'Empire Français en 1805; 2. Regnier Claude Ambroise 1746-1814" attractive woodcut heading of Justice and the Law with 6 other short decrees concerning secondary schools and lyceés 16 pp. 8vo. numbered 545-560 of the "3rd Series" Paris Imprimerie de la République 17-23 ventôse year XI 8-14 March folded from the printed sheet 3 neat stab holes near inner margins without loss top edge opened others uncut in fresh condition Decree 2398 carefully defines French nationality "la qualité de Français" and equates it with the possession of civil rights. It also deals with the powers of French courts over foreigners and loss of civil rights for example by enlisting abroad without permission. Further it introduces the concept of "civil death" which allows heirs to take possession "in the same way as if one had died naturally and intestate" dissolves any marriage and allows one to be a party to a case only under a "curateur" appointed by the court. Condemnation for contempt of court "contumace" brings civil death if not purged within five years. Decree 2404 is for raising 20 companies of 100 carpenters and caulkers to serve at Brest Toulon Rochefort and Lorient for the normal term of their military service. It deals with pay uniform promotion boarding and discipline and bread rations expressed both in metric and in ounces. There follows an interesting table listing the numbers to be found by each department including those in Belgium Switzerland and Northern Italy added by conquest since the revolution. unknown

Kept in the original publishers paperboard box covered with green paper with an etched and engraved sample print for a fourth puzzle with a caption headed Équité de l'empereur mounted on the top coloured by a contemporary hand and framed with strips of gilt paper embossed with a decorative pattern. Each puzzle with the original pink paper wrap-around slip preserved. Three from a set of four jigsaw puzzles each 19.5 x 24.5 cm each comprising an engraved print mounted on thin wood coloured by a contemporary hand and cut to form a jigsaw puzzle with an engraved caption and short description below the image. With: 2 La Nuit de Lodi. 3 Clémence de l'empéreur. A nice and colourful set of jigsaw puzzles depicting scenes from the life of Napoleon Bonaparte 1769-1821 2 of the puzzles and the sample plate with address «Ulysse Paris» engraved in the image. Each puzzle has 20 pieces. The first depicts Napoleon Bonaparte calmly sleeping in a chair after having given orders to his generals on the eve of the battle of Austerlitz 1 Dec. 1805. The second shows a still fresh Napoleon addressing an exhausted soldier a scene from the terrible battle at Lodi Italy 10 May 1796 between French forces under Napoleon Bonaparte and the Austrian rear guard led by Johann Beaulieu. The third shows Napoleon as merciful Emperor receiving the thankful wife and children of a Prussian lord accused of conspiracy but whom he nonetheless pardoned.The puzzle matching the scene mounted on the top of the box is not included; a few pieces cracked at thin spots; box slightly defective with traces of use and browned. 18051047<p>Original manuscript c.1805. Original ink manuscript letter. 30 x 22.2cm. The paper watermarked with a French imperial eagle and the name of the papermaker "Poviata". Small ink stamp "Bibliotheca Lindesiana" to the lower-right corner indicating that the letter was once part of the great library formed by the Lindsay family Earls of Crawford and Balcarres. Condition is very good with a couple of minor chips to the blank lower margin two light diagonal creases to the top-right corner and an old linen mount to the left-hand margin where the letter was once inserted into an album. An unusual and evocative letter in which the young Dominique Joseph Robaglia aged just sixteen and a half from Napoleon's own birthplace of Ajaccio Corsica asks the emperor to admit him to the school of Artillery presumably at the École Militaire in Paris where Napoleon had himself trained to become an artillery officer as a young man.</p><p>Addressed "Sire" the letter states: "Robaglia Dominique Joseph aged sixteen and half years native of Ajaccio has the honour of exhibiting to you very respectfully that having known courses in humanities arithmetic and algebra has just finished his geometry class. Having always had a penchant for the military and desiring to exercise the little talent he may have in the service of your Majesty beg him to be willing to admit him to the number of students of the Artillery. He will be faithful and so will make worthy of the tales of his Majesty. I have the honour to be Sire with the very profound sentiments of respect to your Majesty the very humble obedient and faithful subject D. J. Robaglia".</p><p>As indicated by an old ownership stamp the letter at one time formed part of the Lindsay Library once considered amongst the greatest libraries in Britain containing an important collection of letters and documents relating to the royal families and crowned heads of Europe prior to its dispersal in the early twentieth century.</p><p>A charming piece of Napoleana.</p> [Original manuscript]
