A benefit for Mr. James Wallack an actor and later manager with a Napoleon related play 'The Little Corporal; or the School of Bonaparte' relating to his time at the military school at Brienne and the celebrated snow ball fight led by Napoleon in the winter of 1783-4 with a 'terrific bombardment with snow balls!' Also appearing were Cooke's Equestrian establishment and his 'celebrated stud of ponies' promising a 'grand attack of Lilliputian cavalry'. Some separation along gutter from top edge; minor loss at lower inner corner. Light toning and soiling. An interesting publication from the Niños Espósitos press in Buenos Aires announcing the invasion of Spain by Napoleon in 1808. The text comprises a letter from Spanish authorities in Galicia to the Viceroy of Rio de la Plata Santiago de Liniers informing him of state of war exists between France and Spain and introducing him to Joaquin Somoza de Monsoriu the captain of the frigate charged with bearing the news of the situation in Spain to South America. The missive goes on to say the Somoza has been charged with returning to Spain with royal funds from the Viceroyalty to aid in the war effort and continues to solicit financial aid and military volunteers from the residents of the Rio de la Plata. In a 20th-century ring binder with the title "Postzegelmapje van Nederland" lettered in gold on the spine and the front underneath a gold embossed coat-of-arms of the Netherlands. The postcards are loosely inserted in 21 translucent plastic covers. With 81 hand-coloured or black-and-white photographic picture postcards including 9 duplicates. Three remarkable sets of early 20th-century French picture postcards which form a large image of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte 1769-1821 when laid side-by-side. This type of photographic collage is known as "instalment puzzle postcards". The three sets consist of 12 10 and 12 postcards respectively and are partly coloured by hand. They show Napoleon Bonaparte in a classic pose with bicorne hat and one hand in his waistcoat surrounded by various scenes from his domestic and military life. Also included are nearly 40 postcards composed of scenes with actors and montaged reproductions of historical engravings relating to Napoleon.Two of the puzzle postcard sets are published in the series "Croissant" referring to the address "Rue du Croissant" in Paris where the publisher Charles Fontane was located at the beginning of the 20th century. Fontane is also known as director of the French magazine "Le Cartophile" and president of the "Cartophile-Club".Two sets with "carte postale" printed on the verso the third set with "made in France" printed on the verso. A fourth set of Napoleon puzzle postcards is incomplete missing one postcard. All postcards are unused with only signs of minor wear. Overall in very good condition. unknown

An honest and completely contemporary example. FIRST EDITION. TALLEYRAND THE SUBJECT OF SO MANY WRITTEN RECORDS AND EVEN OF FILMS OVER THE YEARS. Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord 1st Prince of Benevento then Prince of Talleyrand was a French secularized clergyman statesman and leading diplomat. After studying theology he became Agent-General of the Clergy in 1780. In 1789 just before the French Revolution he became Bishop of Autun. He worked at the highest levels of successive French governments most commonly as foreign minister or in some other diplomatic capacity. He served as the French Diplomat in the Congress of Vienna. His career spanned the regimes of Louis XVI the years of the French Revolution Napoleon Louis XVIII Charles X and Louis Philippe I. Those Talleyrand served often distrusted him but found him extremely useful.<br> Talleyrand was Napoleon's chief diplomat during the years when French military victories brought one European state after another under French hegemony. Most of the time he worked for peace so as to consolidate France's gains. He succeeded in obtaining peace with Austria through the 1801 Treaty of Lunéville and with Britain in the 1802 Treaty of Amiens. He could not prevent the renewal of war in 1803 but by 1805 he opposed his emperor's renewed wars against Austria Prussia and Russia. He resigned as foreign minister in August 1807 but retained the trust of Napoleon. He conspired to undermine the emperor's plans through secret dealings with Tsar Alexander I of Russia and the Austrian minister Klemens von Metternich. Talleyrand sought a negotiated secure peace so as to perpetuate the gains of the French Revolution. Napoleon rejected peace; when he fell in 1814 Talleyrand supported the Bourbon Restoration decided by the Allies. He played a major role at the Congress of Vienna in 1814–1815 where he negotiated a favorable settlement for France and played a role in unwinding the Napoleonic Wars. Printed for J. 11944On paper watermarked 'J WHATMAN 1816'. A fine plan so neatly and delicately drawn that it could easily pass for an engraving. The title concludes: '. its Defence under the Command of SIR SIDNEY SMITH. Kt. &ca. &ca. &ca. - on the 2nd: day of May 1799.' In landscape on one side of a piece of laid paper 29 x 42cm with the plan itself within a 19.5 x 32.5cm border. The drawing and the precise and detailed lettering are in ink the whole coloured in grey brown pink and blue watercolour. On aged and lightly-creased paper with a couple of small unobtrusive holes. On a scale of one and a half inches to half a mile. Nine ships are named from the 'Torride' to the 'Mary Ann' with the depth in fathoms and dotted lines of fire. The position of the English around the besieged town is given with an 'Aqueduct' and the 'Enemy's Trenches and Batteries'. A crude stylised representation of the 'Enemy's Camp' appears in the top left-hand corner. A nice memento to the battle and soldier Smith which Napoleon considered made him miss his 'destiny'. Tod-Mercer and dated 1896. 8vo in a beautiful Zaehnsdorf signed binding dated 1896 thus no doubt custom made for the presentation to George E. Mercer. The binding is of full crushed scarlet morocco richly adorned in fine late-Victorian style. The boards feature a wide frame of gilt vines flowers and thistles which is further ruled in gilt then further surrounded by minutely detailed gilt rolling the upper boards also lettered “Mercer’s Waterloo†in fine gilt stamping the smooth rounded spines with gilt lettering with a gilt oval surrounded by more gilt vines and flowers which then grow both up and below to fully frame the spine panel board edges gilt ruled wide turn-ins gilt tooled in the same motif as the covers silk endpapers with powder blue moire pattern and further gilt tooling complete this beautiful presentation a.e.g. xii 369; viii 347 pp. An extraordinary set the condition remains outstanding. The text-block is essentially pristine the fine bindings show only the most minimal evidence of age. Truly and outstanding and unique copy. A SCARCE AND IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION SCARCE IN ANY STATE AND THIS AN EXTRAORDINARY COPY. Mercer's ‘Journal’ is an important source for historians of the Waterloo campaign as well as a detailed description of the landscape and people of Belgium and France in the early 19th century. It is one of the few accounts of the period written by an artillery officer. Mercer’s journals were kept throughout the campaign of 1815 but were not published until 1870 after his death. The work was compiled and written in its finished form some 30 years earlier from the original notes Mercer wrote contemporaneously with additions and verifications from correspondence and other sources. It covers the period from April 1815 to January 1816. Although he eventually rose to the rank of general his fame is as commander of the British G Troop Royal Horse Artillery in the thick of the fighting at the Battle of Waterloo. It is also notable for its lengthy descriptions of the countryside and its people.<br> In spite of his position with the British Army the work is usually found in 20th Century editions in French. Studio portrait of Grace Greenwood 1823–1904 the pen name of Sara Jane Clarke Lippincott: journalist poet lecturer and one of the most widely read women writers of the nineteenth century. Greenwood was a committed abolitionist contributing to antislavery newspapers including the National Anti-Slavery Standard and using her national platform to denounce slavery and support the Union cause. During the Civil War she reported from Washington D.C. advocating emancipation and commenting directly on federal policy. Her writings and lectures frequently addressed women’s legal and political inequality and she became an outspoken supporter of woman suffrage. Greenwood also traveled in Europe as a foreign correspondent publishing travel narratives and political commentary. A popular public lecturer she addressed audiences across the United States on reform literature and women’s advancement becoming one of the era’s most visible female voices.<br /> <br /> Offered here is a portrait of Greenwood taken by Broadway photographer Napoleon Sarony. The photograph shows Greenwood later in her career posed thoughtfully with her head resting upon her hand a book held in the other—a studio convention of the period used to convey authority. Sarony’s 680 Broadway studio was known for photographing leading literary and theatrical figures; this example situates Greenwood among the cultural elite of post–Civil War New York.
