In fine condition. During the 1920s German-Swiss author Emil Ludwig became achieved international fame for his popular biographies of historical "greats" which combined historical fact and fiction with psychological analysis. As Ludwig's biographies were popular outside of Germany and were widely translated he was one of the fortunate émigrés who had an income while living in the United States. Masquerier on front cover. In fair condition on aged paper in aged and worn wraps with occasional pencil markings in margins. An important catalogue issued in part to make a point during the Great War. The most valuable item by far covering nearly half a page is 223 a copy of Wheeler and Broadley's 'Napoleon and the Invasion of England' 'extra-illustrated and extended to 4 volumes' at £130. The final four sections are 'The map of Europe in the time of Napoleon' pp.35-37; 'Engravings' pp.37-42; 'Napoleonic Caricatures' pp.42-44 and 'Autograph Letters and Manuscripts' pp.44-46. No. 749 priced at £50 is Gen. Gaspard Gourgaud's 'Manuscripts respecting Napoleon I. in his autograph'; its twenty-line description begins with 'The Original Manuscript of a Portion of Napoleon's Own Memoirs dictated to Gen. Gourgaud at St. Helena 11pp. folio.' Also present is a letter by Napoleon's mother priced at £14 and transcribed in full. The parade started from the Arc de Triomphe to his resting place in Invalides. In the lower margin the caption presents the different groups forming the procession: Ajaccio delegation Paris Municipal Council Prince of Joinville Commission of Saint-Helena.in the centre of the panorama stands the spectacular funeral car. Without mention of the publisher this impressive document was undoubtedly printed by Aubert famous publisher of Parisian panoramas published during the same era and also illustrated by Adrien Provost. Publisher's half cloth black Bradel binding goffered silk boards framed with double gilt fillets the first with the gilt title convoi de l'Empereur stamped in the centre. In the distance is seen in the mist and the sunlight against the grey and russet background of the trees in the Champs-élysées beyond the great white phantom-like statues a kind of golden mountain slowly moving. All that can be distinguished of it as yet is a sort of luminous glistening which makes now stars now lightening sparkle over the whole surface of the car. A mighty roar follows this apparition. 43719Sprig from the Willow tree which grew over the tombe of Napoleon Buonapart at St Helena." on one side 8vo. no place no date but circa Napoleon was exiled to St Helena in 1815. In mid-1817 Napoleon's health worsened. His physician Barry O'Meara diagnosed chronic hepatitis and warned Lowe that Napoleon could die from the poor climate and lack of exercise. Lowe thought O'Meara was exaggerating and dismissed him in July 1818. His health continued to worsen and in March 1821 he was confined to bed. In April he wrote two wills declaring that he had been assassinated by the "English oligarchy" that the Bourbons would fall and that his son would rule France. He died on 5th May 1821 at age 51. Napoleon was buried with military honours in the Valley of the Geraniums.Napoleon's heart and intestines were removed and sealed inside his coffin. Napoleon's penis was allegedly removed during the autopsy and sold and exhibited. In 1840 the British government gave Louis Philippe I permission to return Napoleon's remains to France. The weeping willow that shaded Napoleon's grave in the Sane Valley on St. Helena became an iconic symbol of his exile and death. Napoleon frequently rested under these trees and they became a major souvenir attraction for visitors who stripped them of branches Provenance: From a small collection of locks of Royal Hair which were all collected about between 1817 and 1820 so this much have been fairly soon after he was buried. unknown

A trifle browned single small hole touching text without loss of sense. An original example published in Montpelier of the twentieth bulletin of the Grand Armée in Russia. These bulletins were issued by Napoleon in order to communicate progress of his most significant military campaign to date to the French public. Immensely significant propaganda tools these bulletins explained the prevailing conditions; in this case reporting on the French capture of Moscow in the preceding days. Although not the political capital of Russia the city's fall represented a severe blow to defending army. As the bulletin notes 'Moscou est l'entreport de l'Asie et de l'Europe; ses magasins etaient immenses; toutes les maisons etaient approvisionnees de tout pour huit mois'. Somewhat ominously given the benefit of hindsight the bulletin closes somewhat bombastically with a reference to the temperature and the availability of coats and furs: 'La temperature est encore celle de l'automne: le soldat a trouve et trouve beaucoup de pelisses et des fourrures pour l'hiver. Moscou en est le magasin'. Within three months in the now infamous XXIXe. Bulletin Napoleon was to report the full extent of the calamitous failure of the Russian campaign - blaming his military failure almost entirely upon the weather. . The colossal scene served as a backdrop for spectacular evening entertainments including a 'pyrotechnic tableau' illustrating the celebrated equestrian portrait of Napoleon at the Saint Bernard Pass by Jacques-Louis David and concluding with a 'gorgeous display of fireworks'. An apparently unrecorded slip song lamenting the fate of Napoleon. The ballad casts the emperor as a flawed and tragic hero betrayed by those whom he trusted and ultimately abandoned yet ever gallant despite defeat. The final verse rejoices in the return of his remains from St. Helena to Paris in 1840: 'The bones of brave Napoleon that lay mouldering in the grave / In that great city of Paris a tomb has been erected / So splendidly to contain his ashes and his heart / Rich and poor who go that way do joyfully tribute pay / To the immortal memory of Napoleon Bonaparte'. These vivid contemporary accounts span the entire period of the Napoleonic era. <br /> <br /> Starting with the 1798 article in a Connecticut newspaper there is a description of Napoleon's campaign the Egyptian campaign and the mystery which surrounded its goal and destination: "Nothing certain is yet known relative to the destination of Buonaparte's sic armament . Never was a political secret more inviolably kept nor was the curiosity of Europe ever more excited than on this occasion. Among the various destinations assigned by rumor to the expedition Candia sic Cyprus Constantinople and Alexandria are mentioned . See item 1 p3 col. 1.<br /> <br /> The archive ends with Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Waterloo and the new balance of power which resulted in Europe. In the December 16 1818 issue of 'The Morning Chronicle' a letter to the editors remarks on the vast changes in Europe: <br /> "After a state of warfare which has lasted above twenty years and which has entirely changed the face of Europe the reverses which Bonaparte has experienced within the last twelvemonth have at least placed him more on a level with his antagonists in point of power; the terror which attended the prospect of his reducing all Europe to one power is in a great measure dissipated; his motions are neither so rapid nor his advantages so decided as they formerly were. .
