Magnifica opera illustrata da 558 (su 560) tavv. f.t. inc. in rame (inclusa l’antiporta), alc. ripieg., e così suddivise: 188 (su 190) con squisita coloritura d’epoca (alcune sono in b.n.) - 370 (numerate) molte in b.n. ma anche colorate d’epoca, in tutto o in parte. Le tavole rappresentano "le principali divinità e molti soggetti iconologici che si sono presi nei monumenti dell'antichità e nei piu' bei quadri dei grandi Maestri". Il dizionario tratta tutte le mitologie antiche e moderne, dall'Egitto alla Grecia, a Roma, alla Corte dell'Odino degli Scandinavi, al politeismo Indiano; dalla teocrazia dei Messicani e Peruviani ai feticci dell'Africa. Harris was born in Eatonton Georgia where he served as an apprentice on a plantation during his teenage years. He spent the majority of his adult life in Atlanta working as an associate editor at the Atlanta Constitution. Harris led two professional lives: as the editor and journalist known as Joe Harris he supported a vision of the New South with the editor Henry W. Grady 1880–1889 stressing regional and racial reconciliation after the Reconstruction era. As Joel Chandler Harris fiction writer and folklorist he wrote many 'Brer Rabbit' stories from the African-American oral tradition and helped to revolutionize literature in the process.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Some staining to back cover previous owner's neat ink gift inscription to front end paper. [Figurato mitologia-Musica] (cm. 21,6) buona piena pergamena del XVII sec. titolo al dorso.-- cc. 18 nn., pp. 566 + 1 carta bianca. Numerazione errata, saltano le pagine da 17 a 24. Con 89 tavole finemente incise in rame da Bolognino Zaltieri. Con figure mitologiche, mostri, demoni, streghe, divinità ecc. 6 figure con personaggi che suonano strumenti musicali. opera curiosa tradotta in varie lingue. Apparsa nel 1556 e nel 1571 con figure; questa nostra del 1580 è ampliata e corretta rispetto alla precedente e a questa superiore, tanto che servì come base per l' edizione Lionese del 1581 sia per il testo che per le figure da essa copiate. Manca a Mortimer, Caillet e Cicognara. Frontis con vecchio rinforzo al margine alto bianco per un alone a scomparire che interessa il margine di una dozzina di carte all' inizio. Mit Plattenschmutz und Nadelproben im ungereinigten weißen, ca. 6 mm breiten Plattenrand ringsum. Auf der Plattenkante geschnitten. Ganz schwach gebräunt, am Oberrand eine dünne Stelle, insgesamt sehr gut erhalten. Entstanden nach einem Gemälde Tiepolos, ursprünglich im Palazzo Dolfin, San Pantaleone, Venedig. Nach Wildenstein sehr selten!
