New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 384 p., color and b/w ills. The famous aphorism of Hippocrates-'life is short, art long'-stands at the heart of this exhibition, which examines the art and practice of healing in Byzantium from Roman times to the late Byzantine period. It traces the concurrent methods of healing-faith, magic, and rational medicine-from the foundations laid by Apollo and Asklepios, healers of antiquity, as well as Hippocrates and Dioscorides, the founders of rational medicine. The fascinating coexistence of a belief in demons as the primary cause of illness and a rational perception of disease, grounded in Hippocratic teachings, come together in the protagonists of the "art of healing"-the physicians, druggists, saints, holy men, and magicians who healed the sick. The daily rituals involved in maintaining and pursuing well-being, protecting against demons, purifying the body and soul offer a glimpse into the daily life of the Byzantines. The exhibition catalogue illustrates the influence of Byzantium's ancient cultural heritage on religious and rational thought as well as contemporary scientific developments and innovations from around the Mediterranean. The catalogue is one of the most updated and extensive publication on the history and art of healing in Byzantium with essays written by the acclaimed academics and with various works, some of them being published for the first time. New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (32 x 24 cm). Ills. In Turkish and English. 384 p. It is generally recognized that Greek painters from Istanbul contributed to a great extent to Ottoman and Turkish culture, beginning during the Byzantine era. Even after the end of the Byzantine era, however, Greek artists continued to play an active role in the development of art in Istanbul. Undeniably, one of the results of the Greeks having had to leave Turkey for political reasons has been the removal of an important treasure of art and culture from Istanbul. The beauty and splendor of Istanbul and the recurrent themes of migration and longing, are characteristic of the works of numerous Greek artists who left Istanbul at an early age and who developed or continued their artistic work in Greece or in various European countries. This book contains the biographies and more than five hundred works of nearly two hundred Greek artists of Istanbul.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary 1/4 black leather bdg. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. 371 p. Mesâhirü'n-nisâ. Vol. 1. Biographies of women from Islamic and Turkish world. "Mesahiru'n Nisa" Mehmed Zihni Efendi's is one of the most important works in the tradition of Islamic historiography. Within this tradition, a partial examination has been carried out on books written on social classes to determine on how much emphasis has been given on the "type and number" of women. The most important difference that separates "Mesahiru'n-Nisa" from previous traditional books on social classes is the reason it was written. The author wrote his work at the request of "Maarif Nezareti" ( Ministry of Education) to be read to young girl students at "Darulmuallimat" at that time. Zihni Efendi portrayed a "model Muslim woman profile" in his study. Within this framework, the author tried to realize three aims: Women who have become noted in different artistic, social, scientific and occupational areas not because of their gender but because they provide as an example with what they have done to young girl students. On the other hand, the moral side of a woman was given importance and very many moral women introduced in their various aspects were given as an example of their eminent personalities. In particular, emphasis was given on being a "good wife" and a "good mother.". This work was written with the intention of being a history of the past 162 years of the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox community describing its spiritual and social leaders both clergical and laymen i.e. patriarchs, metropolitans, patriarchal delegates, chorepiscopuses, and the monks and priests, deacons, teachers and the board of directors, all who gave their worthy service and their ministry activities to be presented to you, worthy readers; and we do so with great pleasure. Around the year 1844, under the leadership of Mor Korillos (Patriarch Yakup II.), a few Syrian Orthodox families settled in Istanbul. Today there are nearly three thousand Syrian Orthodox families who have created their own niche in the mosaic which is Istanbul. Through the warm relationship that they developed amongst the local people, and in full co-operation with other citizens, they have given service worthy of the honor and glory that is Great Istanbul with their rich cultural, business and industrial activities. Today the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox Diocese holds great importance among other Syrian communities throughout the world. Istanbul had an important place in the history of the Byzantines and the Ottomans and today continues to be an important city for Turkey and the world alike. It has also attracted the interest of Syrian Fathers since the time of the second Ecumenical Council held in Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) in the year 381 AD. During the Ottoman era, however, the Syrian patriarchs came to Istanbul to receive the firman (imperial edict) from the Ottoman Sultans in dealing with the affairs of the community.
