Just as it is privilege to be the General Manager of such an eclectic and wonderful museum, so it has been a privilege to work with so many distinguished contributors, colleagues and consultants in the making of this book. Conceived during our tenth year anniversary festivities, this work is a celebration not only of the richness of the Rahmi M. Koç Museum and its collections, but also of the beauty of industrial heritage, the scientific achievements of mankind, and the genius loci of Istanbul and the Golder Horn. In devising the format of this volume, we were determined to do more than a conventional pictorial catalogue of the most important objects in our collections: we wanted also to celebrate their beauty and craftsmanship; to add atmosphere and depth by including contenporary documents and illustrations; and to provide periodic food for thought in the form of essays from eminent contributors.

Since the publication of our earlier study; 'Orientalism and Turkey', we have been exploring the ramifications of Orientalism in the Ottoman capital of Istanbul itself, or as it was generally known in the nineteenth and early twentieth century: Constantinople. The present study, documented by both visual and written records, including memories, reveals not only the ways in which Istanbul was perceived and portrayed by European artists in the nineteenth century, but it also tries to represent the contemporary city as it truly lived and breathed. In the present work, the reader will discover the identity of Western artists whose works pictorially limned the Ottoman capital, their favorite subjects ¿the harem, the bath, the coffeehouse, and the slave market- and the nature of their interpretation of these subjects.

"Written in 1851-1869, Skarlatos Byzantios' three-volume masterpiece constitutes a feat of 19th c. scholarship, presented here for the first time in an annotated English translation. Drawing on Classical, Byzantine, Western European and Ottoman sources, Constantinople covers a vast period of over two and a half millennia, from the mythical foundation of Byzantium to Skarlatos' own time. A true polyglot and a keen observer, Skarlatos guides the reader through the neighbourhoods, monuments and social practices of his native city, assisted by detailed references to major historical events, personalities and long-forgotten anecdotes. His scholarly interests span across an impressive array of disciplines: political and social history, literature, architecture, epigraphy, urban planning, demography, ethnography, art and folklore. Above all, Skarlatos is a self-avowed devotee of the City of cities.". Contents: Foreword. Translator's Note. Dedication Page of the 1851 Edition. PREFACE. Deniz hamamindan plaja nostalji. [Exhibition catalogue]. Istanbul's Seaside Leisure: Nostalgia from Sea Baths to Beaches analyzes Istanbulites' relation with the sea and swimming from a cultural and sociological perspective. It scrutinizes the transformations of this relation, which started with the sea baths in the second half of the 19th century and continued till the mid-20th century. Having brought together photographs, published material, ephemera, videos and music from varying private and institutional collections, prominently from Suna and Inan Kiraç Photography Collection, the exhibition illustrates how a waterside city like Istanbul had to make do with "sea baths" that were enclosed with wooden panels, despite the effect of Westernization. It is a documentary testament of the radical transformations in the Republic's lifestyle, socialization of the norms of howIstanbulites used their free time, and the notion of sea, which once only evoked the ideas of trade, travel and scenery. The exhibition catalogue presents three articles, which approaches the relation of Istanbul with the sea between the second half of the 19th century and the mid-20th century from varying perspectives. The curator of the exhibition Zafer Toprak's article on the social transformation in relation with the Istanbulites' intimacy with the sea is accompanied by Gökhan Akçura's work on sea and entertainment culture, and Meltem Ö. Gürel's study in which she reads the architectural interventions in regard to people's relation with the sea.

Una koleksyon de konsejas i fotografias. Jewish Constantinople portrays Jewish life during the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the modern Republic of Turkey. It spans the two generations prior to the one depicted in Jewish Istanbul. The semi-biographical vignettes feature the Kohen, Benshoam, Levi and Romano family ancestors. The book includes photographs from the Kohen family archives. These were the last generations to grow up speaking Judeo-Spanish. They strove to preserve their native tongue until the changes brought by the two World Wars overwhelmed their efforts. Through the passionate retelling of the previous generation's stories and the use of colorful Judeo-Spanish proverbs, they sought to preserve not only the language but the cultural history it embodied.
