Spine ends a bit soft. A tiny blemish or two to cloth but still uncommonly well-preserved. Equally attractive unclipped dust-jacket $2.00 has the very scarce wrap-around band which is split in two places but otherwise fine and very difficult to find in any condition. Monumental genealogical manuscript volumes recording the descent of Clarence Moore of Washington D.C. who died aboard the S.S. Titanic in April 1912 and his second wife Mabille daughter of Edwin Carleton Swift of Prides Crossing Massachusetts. They were married in 1900 and had four sons: Edwin Swift Moore born 1901 died in childhood 1907; Jasper Moore born 1905; Clarence Moore born 1910; and Lloyd Moore born 29 November 1912. In addition to the detailed genealogical reports the volumes include extenisve extracts from historical documents and records in England Pennsylvania Massachusetts and Maryland. The Swift Genealogy William Swyft of Sandwitch and some of his descendants 1637-1887 includes 1296 entries and concludes with a family tree for Mabille Florence Swift. The researches for Moore were conducted by "Hester Dorsey Richardson and Albert Levin Richardson experts in Original Research of Baltimore Maryland".<br /> The Moore pedigree is updated through 1926 noting that Mabille married again in 1915 to Aksel de Wichfeld of Maribe Denmark.<br /> <br /> Clarence Moore 1865-1912 a banker and sportsman of Washington. D.C. and M.F.H. of the Loudoun Hunt and the Chevy Chase Hunt had travelled to England to buy a pack of hounds and sailed for home on the Titanic. Survivors reported Moore's heroic conduct. He lowered women and children into the lifeboats and refused to take a place in the boats.<br /> <br /> A beautiful and imposing genealogy. unknown

Margaret O'Dell a blackmailing musical comedy star is found strangled in her apartment and four men come under suspicion: Lindquist a half-mad doctor in love with Margaret; Cleaver a politician whose career she threatened; Mannix a fat broker with a jealous wife; and Jimmy Spotswoode a young society boy Margaret was attempting to blackmail into marriage. Jimmy is arrested and Philo Vance a whimsical society man and amateur detective who is a close friend of Jimmy's father is called in on the case. The basis of the 1929 film directed by Frank Tuttle starring William Powell as Philo Vance with Jean Arthur Ullrich Haupt and Florence Eldridge. George O’Hara 1899 - 1966 began his film career working for early Hollywood director Mack Sennett and is best known for starring in Fighting Blood 1923 When Gale and Hurricane Met 1923 and California or Bust 1927. Otto Penzler in his Descriptive Bibliography on S. S. Van Dine says "The capital letter "A" must appear on the copyright page. The "A" was dropped from all subsequent printings the method by which Scribner's identified its first printings from 1930 to 1972." Fine bright tight copy with all lettering on the cloth bright and un-chipped in a fine dust jacket with two tiny closed tears at head of spine. Philo Vance's elaborate murder investigation takes place in a museum of Egyptology. There is a great deal of material on ancient Egyptian art. Besides being an important and the earliest accurate directory of Denver and other Colorado counties it has a detailed list of the mines in all the counties p. 174-216 Howes C 611 who notes this was printed in Chicago prior to the fire thus a pre-Chicago fire imprint. It also has the bookseller label of Raymer's Old Bookstore. He later removed to Minneapolis where he advertised using the same ad format in 1885 and then in 1889 was convicted of violating the second-hand dealer's ordinance for buying valuable books for only $1.
