Première édition critique intégrale du manuscrit : Les Cancans de l'Opéra ou Le Journal d'une habilleuse, de 1836 à 1848. Edition accompagnée d'une histoire sommaire de La salle Peletier, d'une chronologie théâtrale des années concernées et d'un lexique biographique des personnages cités. L'ouvrage comprend une importante iconographie théâtrale raisonnée. Parmi les manuscrits conservés à la bibliothèque de l'Opéra se trouve un « Journal » injustement méconnu des chercheurs : il porte sur les années 1836 à 1848, à l'époque où l'Opéra était situé dans la rue Le Peletier. Jean-Louis Tamvaco en fait ici l'édition critique et nous révèle notamment l'identité de son rédacteur, Louis Gentil. Par-delà les aspects anecdotiques concernant la vie de l'Académie royale de Musique au temps de son apogée romantique, l'ensemble est une source de première importance sur le climat social et artistique de l'époque. Un manuscrit, portant le titre de « Cancans de l’Opéra ou le journal d’une habilleuse », couvrant la période 1836-1848, connu de quelques rares spécialistes, n’avait jamais été étudié de manière systématique. Il représente pourtant une mine de renseignements sur la vie de l’Opéra dans les années romantiques, celles de l’apogée de la salle Le Peletier. Au prix d’une véritable enquête policière, Jean-Louis Tamvaco, dans cette première édition critique, nous donne les clés pour comprendre ce monde que le recul du temps rendait souvent indéchiffrable. « Dans cette Babylone, se côtoyaient [ ] employés du théâtre, abonnés, artistes du chant et de la danse, membres de l’orchestre, compositeurs et gens de lettres, politiciens, femmes du monde et femmes entretenues, parvenus et lions de tout poil, membres de la noblesse et de la bourgeoisie, ouvriers et garçons de théâtre » Les manuscrits (dans le volume 1), les chronologies théâtrales et les notices biographiques (dans le volume 2) nous proposent une véritable immersion dans la vie culturelle et sociale de la Monarchie de Juillet. Par-delà ce foisonnement, nous est aussi et enfin révélé le nom de l'« habilleuse » qui nous donne, après un anonymat de 150 ans, accompagné de Jean-Louis Tamvaco, un témoignage exceptionnel. Wagner appelle les amateurs à s'associer librement pour défendre son oeuvre mais aussi intéresser l'ensemble du peuple allemand et le gagner à sa cause. De fait, en cette même année, la première association wagnérienne fut fondée et dès 1872, Wagner déménagea de Triebschen à Bayreuth où il s'installa avec sa femme Cosima. Wagner rief die Liebhaber dazu auf, sich frei zusammenzuschließen, um sein Werk zu verteidigen, aber auch das gesamte deutsche Volk zu interessieren und für seine Sache zu gewinnen. Tatsächlich wurde im selben Jahr der erste Wagner-Verein gegründet, und bereits 1872 zog Wagner von Triebschen nach Bayreuth, wo er sich mit seiner Frau Cosima niederließ. In-8 (197 x 125 mm), demi-vélin ivoire de l'époque, dos lisse, couvertures conservées, (2), 142 p., exemplaire non rogné, imprimé sur papier vergé fort. Première et unique traduction française, rare. Fille de l’armateur Robert Miles Sloman de Hambourg, Eliza Wille (1809-1893) bénéficia d’une éducation complète et voyagea dès ses jeunes années. Elle épousa en 1845 le journaliste François Wille et s’installa avec lui, en 1851, au domaine de Mariafeld à Meilen (canton de Zurich) où elle reçut les personnalités de la vie culturelle, scientifique et politique de son temps. En 1852, elle accueillit pour la première fois Richard Wagner qui lut, en public, le livret de "L’Anneau du Nibelungen" qu'il venait d'achever. Les Wille furent longtemps des amis et un soutien dévoués de Wagner. En 1864, c'est chez eux que le compositeur, alors criblé de dettes, trouva refuge.
