Very Large Engraved Bookplate Of Thomas Anson Showing His Arms "Nil Desperandem" And Two Putti. Per Wikipedia Thomas Anson Frs C. 1695 - 1773 Was A British Member Of Parliament Traveler And Amateur Architect From The Anson Family. Anson Was The Son Of William Anson 1656-1720 And Isabella Carrier Sister-In-Law To Thomas Parker 1St Earl Of Macclesfield. The Family Estate Was Shugborough Hall In Staffordshire. Admiral George Anson 1St Baron Anson Was His Younger Brother And Along With Their Cousin George Parker 2Nd Earl Of Macclesfield They Were Taught Mathematics And Navigation By Isaac Newton's Friend The Mathematician William Jones Who Was Later To Propose Anson's Membership For The Royal Society In 1730. Anson Went Up To St John's College Oxford And Later Studied Law At The Inner Temple. Upon His Father's Death Anson Abandoned Law And Began The First Of Many Travels To The Continent As Was Then The Fashion For Young Men Of Fortune And Taste. In 1732 Anson And His Friend The Earl Of Sandwich Formed A Riotous Dining-Club Called The Society Of The Dilettanti Which Also Had The More Serious Purpose Of Encouraging Study Of Greek Architecture. In 1740 Thomas Briefly Joined His Brother George On The Centurion As He And His Crew Began Their Circumnavigation Of The Globe. Anson Left Them In Order To Travel To Egypt. This Qualified Him For The Egyptian Society And The Divan Society The Latter Being A Wild Drinking-Club Of Which Lord Dashwood And Lady Mary Wortley Montagu Were Avid Members. He Was Elected To The House Of Commons For Lichfield In 1747 A Seat He Held Until 1770. In 1748 Anson Was Sent To Versailles By Lord Sandwich With Secret Correspondence For The Duc De Choiseul And Madame De Pompadour. In Paris He Bought Crayons For His Friend The Duchess Of Bedford And His Sister-In-Law Lady Anson Sent Him A Long List Of Presents She Desired. In 1762 He Succeeded To The Vast Fortune Of Spanish Treasure Amassed By His Admiral Brother. This Enabled Him To Further Indulge His Passion For Architecture At Shugborough. Anson And Another Member Of The Society Of The Diletantti Rebuilt The House In The Greek Revival Style That The Pair Were Championing In England. Anson Filled Shugborough With Paintings Books And Objets D'art And Had Vasalli Paint Allegories Upon The Ceilings. The Park Was Strewn With Temples And Follies Including The Mysterious Shepherd's Monument The Pagoda Pigeon House And The Tower Of The Winds. The Park Has Been Described By Some As A Metaphor For Lord Anson's Circumnavigation Of The Globe. Others Contend That It Engages Aspects Of Many Cultures Both As A Tribute To Admiral Anson's Voyage And As A Representation Of Thomas Anson's Interest In Syncretic Philosophies. Anson Died Unmarried In March 1773. The Anson Estates Were Passed On To His Nephew George Adams Who Assumed The Surname Of Anson And Was Ancestor Of The Earls Of Lichfield.

hardcover

1881QQ0306Macmillan and Co 1881. Full red cloth black decor and lettering to front board and spine; black publisher's insignia to rear board. Much worn: spine darkened; boards bubbled and tide-marked at base. 8vo. Front hinge slightly slack. Front endpapers cracked at gutter; rear endpapers likewise with rear free endpaper now attached to inside rear board at base thanks to water damage. Pictorial bookplate of Edward Chesterton father of Cecil and G. K. Chesterton to inside front board with pen inscription to verso of front free endpaper: 'E. C. from M. M. J.' or M. M. F. Oct-Birth-/82'. Pencil annots to blank verso of half-title: what appear to be street or house names S. Parade Seaview and lists of times: these have every appearance of being notes taken in a professional capacity by Edward Chesterton who worked as an estate agent. Pencil annots in a child's hand to publisher's advertisement pages to rear: lists of words with their French German Latin and Greek translations perhaps the work of one of the young Chestertons G. K. Chesterton would have been 8 in 1882. To recto of rear free endpaper is a pencil sketch of a flamingo with an inordinately long neck tied in knots together with an Edward Lear-esque beetle-man with spectacles and antennae. These could be the work of either an older G. K. Chesterton an inveterate sketcher in book-margins or of his father of whom Chesterton notes in his 1937 autobiography that 'I have inherited or I hope imitated his habit of drawing' p. 41: the bookplate at the front of the vol. which has signature E. C. is almost certainly his design. G. K. Chesterton was later to write memorably on De Quincey as 'the first and most powerful of the decadents' in his 1913 'The Victorian Age in Literature' p. 24. Whether the drawings here are by father or son they stand as testament to their shared delight in the fanciful and fantastic. Robust packaging. Tracking can be added to overseas orders on request. Card Wrappers With Mission And Title And Author's Name On Front Cover Title Author And Publisher On Spine. Most Of First 48 Pages Were Neatly Broken Or Cut Off Near The Gutter Edge Then Re-Attached With Tape; Possibly They Were Bound In Incorrect Order And Then Re-Attached In Correct Order. In 1920 Clarence A. Black Sold The Covarrubias Adobe To John R. Southworth A Writer And Historian Who Had Lived In Mexico For 34 Years Before Moving To Santa Barbara Where He Opened An Antique And Curio Store In The Oreña Studios. Southworth Remodeled The Covarrubias By Cladding The Interior With Asbestos Wallboard And Redwood In A Gothic Style. Outside He Constructed A Wall Of Cement Around And Underneath The Old Walls Making A Cradle To Insure Its Survival For Another Hundred Years. Also In 1920 The Natural History Museum Was Under Pressure To Vacate Its Premises At 930 Anacapa Street So A Women'S Hotel The Margaret Baylor Inn Could Be Built. They Announced The Sale Of Their Adobe Building And Hundreds Of Old "Indian-Made" Roof Tiles. No Buyer Stepped Forward And The Native Daughters And The Native Sons Of The Golden West Advocated Demolishing The Old Adobe Which They Felt Had No Historic Significance. John Southworth Came To The Rescue Purchased The 1836 Malo Adobe And Laid Plans To Move It Next To The Covarrubias. "It Will Be The First Adobe In California To Be Moved Without Melting Away" He Said. By 1924 Its Resurrection Was Complete And It Rested Across From The Covarrubias Leaving A Charming Patio Between. For The Next 18 Years The Covarrubias And The Historic Adobe Were Alternately Leased In Whole Or Part By Southworth Who Periodically Lived There And Ran His Antique Business. Lessees Included Residents Who Ran A Tearoom Antique Dealers A Photographic Studio An Interior Decorating Business Shops And Art Gallery. In 1932 Mebane Beasley Opened A Vocal Studio At The Covarrubias. After A Recital The Reviewer Remarked "The Charm Of The Large Room Where The Recital Was Held Is Felt In Its Lighting Of Candles And Everywhere Are To Be Seen Delightful Old Paintings And Furniture While The Steinway Piano In Its Most Original Casing Is A Work Of Art." In Keeping With The Music Theme In 1935 Roger Clerbois A Founder Of The Community Arts Association Orchestra Leased The Covarrubias For His Mozart Society. In 1936 Southworth Tried To Rid Himself Of Both Adobes And Put Them Up For Auction. The Morning Press Report Was A Bit Wistful As It Stated "The Buildings Though Privately Owned Have Been Among The Principal Show Places Of Santa Barbara For Years And Have Been Regarded Almost In The Light Of Community Possessions." Back In 1931 The California State Chamber Of Commerce Had Marked Them As One Of 18 Points Of Historic Interest In Santa Barbara County. There Were No Takers At The Auction However And They Were Leased Out Again. Santa Barbarans Must Have Been Pleased When The New Business "Los Adobes" Advertised They Had Opened A Night Club With Dining Dancing And Cocktails. That August Eddie Valencia And His Beach Combers Entertained With Their Signature Big Band Sound Tinged With A Hawaiian Twang. Dancing Began At 8:30 Pm On A Newly Installed Dance Floor. In 1938 Southworth Was Finally Able To Sell The Adobes. Los Rancheros Visitadores Planned To Restore And Preserve Them As A Club Center Complete With Museum And Art Gallery. Leo Carrillo Direct Descendent Of The Pioneer Carrillo Family Became Head Of The Building Committee And Was Assisted By Architect Joseph Plunkett. They Replaced The Shingle Roof With Tile Restored The Adobe Walls While Adding Buttressing And Restored The Fountain In The Courtyard. The finest gun writer of the 20th century Elmer Keith. Elmer Merrifield Keith March 8 1899 – February 14 1984 was an Idaho rancher firearms enthusiast and author. Keith was instrumental in the development of the first magnum revolver cartridge the .357 Magnum as well as the later .44 Magnum and .41 Magnum cartridges credited by Roy G. Jinks as "the father of big bore handgunning." Keith was a prolific writer writing both books and magazine columns. During the 1950s and 1960s he was especially well known for his regular monthly columns he wrote for Guns & Ammo magazine and American Rifleman typically exploring the performance of the latest new gun offerings especially those firing large heavy bullets pushed to high velocities. Keith was instrumental in the development of various wildcat cartridges a few of which were later adopted as factory rounds. This is still the definitive book on rifles for large game. He was no fan of small calibers for medium game and would not suffer fools that had no practical experience in hunting. Riling 2551 Very respectable vintage copy in DJ. 4671PORNOGRAPHIC WATERCOLORS. Album. 9pgs. 7 x 5. No date circa 1950s. Cleveland. A scrapbook of nine pornographic watercolors probably dating from the 1950s. On the back of the last page is a pencil note Drawn by an artist named Ganzman of Cleveland. Without giving away too many details the illustrations concern a relationship between Elsie May and Zeke and the drawings get more obscene as the book progresses. Finally Elsie Mays father a farmer shows up with a shotgun on the last page. Based on the misspellings the artist either wasnt a native English speaker or a poor speller. I do not believe this is the work of a teenage boy. The scrapbook is held together by two clasps and the edges have some wear and folds. unknown
