19582020
First Edition. 185 pp. in blue cloth covered boards and printed dust jacket. 4to. Fair. Jacket with general discoloration and chipping several closed tears at spine and some loss to the rear. See below for interior description. 2020

A well-worn personal copy of The Blue and Brown Books which belonged to renowned philosopher and art critic Arthur C. Danto with his ownership inscription "Ar. Danto Dept of Philosophy Columbia University Ny. Ny." on the first endpaper. Additionally the "Blue Book" section bears Danto's underlining and annotations in ink and blue pencil throughout. More notably however the book also contains a few sketches by Danto: on page 62 there is a small head in the margin and partially overlapping the text and on the rear endpapers another head and a full figure below a pencilled note indicating the location of the first appearance of "language games" in the text all drawn in blue pencil. While he was an undergraduate Danto had intended to become an artist and apparently still indulged an occasional impulse in this direction even after his turn to philosophy. As such this copy is a unique testament to Danto's early ambitions and the development of his career.
Harper and Brothers

Known as "odd man out" of the Czech literary world who influenced and was influenced by Kafka Weiner 1884-1937 still remains unknown outside of Czech readers. His poetry absorbed the influence of Vildrac and Duhamel and became increasingly surrealist by this date; he was close to René Daumal and Le Grand Jeu during his extended stay in Paris. His prose and novels are treasures awaiting discovery by a larger global readership. This is a fine bibliophile production containing Weiner's most important verse and abstract surrealist drawings by Weiner's close friend Josef Šima.
Aventinum paperback

1919011793London: William Heinemann 1919. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Bianco's first illustrated book; her illustrations apparently moved de la Mare to compose these poems. About the nicest copy we could expect to see in original dustracket which has expectedly imparted the faintest of toning to the edges of the white covers. Little evidence of use or readership at all; internals unblemished. The brown paper illustrated dustjacket is a tad soiled at top edge where it shows little creasing at the front top edge and some very shallow chips top edge rear panel and a narrow strip of loss head of spine. This book ends with the poem Sephina on page 43 with a small drawing at the end of the poem. William Heinemann hardcover
