19729271New York: Colorcraft Inc. 1972. First Printing. Near Fine. Minimal wear else bright and clean. 25x39". Photographic image. <br/><br/>"This propaganda poster was issued by artists and writers united in protest against U.S. government policies under President Richard M. Nixon who was elected in 1968. In 1972 Nixon ran for re-election defeating the Democrat George McGovern. The Nixon campaign slogan was "Four More Years." This poster subverts the slogan asking instead whether Americans really wanted four more years of Nixon presidency. Printed over Ron L. Haeberle's well-known and disturbing image of the My Lai massacre in Vietnam the message creates a stark association between controversial American foreign policy and savage brutality. The image supplies its own answer to the leading question implying that four more years under Nixon's administration could lead to further violence and subjugation. Later in 1972 Nixon's Watergate scandal emerged eventually forcing the President to resign." V&A description A very handsome copy of a remarkably strong piece of political commentary/protest. 1978022106No Place: No Publisher 1978. Unbound. Very Good. Collection of seven sheets all approximately 8 ½ by 11 inches. A proposal for what we presume to be a work "Reader's Digestible" which was issued as an anthology of Rhode Island artists. The first sheet on thin graph paper contains the proposal which was a "Systems Model for an Artist's Motor Behavior" with what appears to be handwritten text and art. This sheet contains an explanation of the flowchart Coleman and Powell created. The second sheet is a mock up on paper mounted to cardstock of the apparent end piece of art consisting of a flow chart type diagram with various images in rectangles and words. This is again titled "Systems Model for an Artist's Motor Behavior." This is covered in tissue paper fastened to the cardstock with masking tape. The third sheet is the same as the previous being a variation of the mock up. The fourth sheet is graph paper bearing what appears to be the final version of the piece including a red stamp with a baby and "crawl for art" in a red circle. The fifth sheet is a mock up mounted on cardstock for another piece of art work consisting of a newspaper clipping of want ads a semicircular cut out map showing downtown Philadelphia part of Camden and the Crawl for Art baby glued on top. The sixth sheet is a final version of the previous. The seventh is another version captioned in handwritten letters "Providence to Philly/Summer 1978 C.E. Coleman/A W Powell. Pink marker X on the map. From the collection of Alan Powell an electronic media artist and founding member of the Electron Movers. The collective started in 1974 and ended around 1979 as a group of five artists: Laurie McDonald Robert Jungels Dorothy Jungels Dennis Hlynsky and Alan Powell. Three other artists joined later on. As McDonald notes on her website the group "Explored the intersections of many disciplines including film/video music dance visual arts electrical and optical engineering challenging established moving image narrative formats in their attempt to explore video as a new language system." See McDonald's website for previous quote. All in about VERY GOOD condition with varying amounts of minor creasing toning or edgewear. No Publisher unknown
