This is an excellent RARE and OBSCURE early group of six b.w. original photographs documenting the activities of the "Hong Wei Bing" "Chinese Red Guards". . It shows early examples of street action at the beginning of the "Da Wen Hua Da Geming" "Cultural Revolution". This movement officially ran from 1966-1967 but in reality lasted until Mao's death on September 9 1976. . THE PHOTOS: . 1. Shows "Hong Wei Bing" "Chinese Red Guards" marching in the street carrying a large photo of Chairman Mao and slogan: "MAO ZUSHI MAN SUI" "LONG LIVE CHAIRMAN MAO" others in the rear carry the national flag of China. . Original photographs of the "Hong Wei Bing" "Chinese Red Guards" and the "Da Wen Hua Da Geming" "Cultural Revolution" are RARE and not commonly found. Therefore this group of original period photographs are a stunning primary and historical record of the early actions and events. . CONDITION: The group of photographs are in excellent condition no defects. Each comes with a red printed caption in Chinese tipped on to the edge of the photograph. We note that at the beginning of each caption paragraph the first character or perhaps a number was scratched out. This does not detract from the overall capton. . DATE: Circa 1966-1967 There is a printed date found on photo #4. showing these photos to be from 1966-1967 period which is the beginning of the "Cultural Revolution" & "Hong Wei Bing" "Red Guards" movement. . Four albumen cabinet photographs sized 3.9 x 4.9 in. mounted on thick studio board stock sized 4.25 x 5.25 in. w/ all four containing manuscript annotations in ink on versos minor dustsoiling edgewear minor over-exposure to a couple images still a nice grouping with consistent contrast and definition. These scarce original albumen photos show the canyon water fall power and miners along the Hoodoo Quartz Claim Mineral Survey No. 403A and B which was filed originally in 1892 and are neatly numbered 3 6 15 & 11. The first image shows a heavily forested canyon with creek running through and annotations on verso detailing that the “Anaconda and Roman Senator lodes at the head of gulch.†The second photo shows fast running water fall and creek -- “water power that will be utilized in the development of the Stilliguamish sic and Sultan Mining Co’s property. Copper Lake Canyon.†Third photo depicts gold miners carrying and working with pick axes in “Hoodoo Canyon 500 feet higher up. . . the vein is found in the bed of the gulch at this point.†The series of mines developed by the Stillaguamish & Sultan Mining Co. had a well-defined fissure vein carrying iron and copper pyrites and pyrrhotite with bell metal all contained in a lime quartz gangue. The main tunnel was driven 420 feet on the Hoodoo ledge with about another 200 feet of tunneling ore concentrate worth about $83 a ton including gold silver and copper ores. The description on back of four describes “passageway where work was shot away for approach to Hoodoo tunnel. The snow banks in the distance and at the right are at the foot of Big Four Mountain. . . seen plainly from Monte Cristo 8 miles East.†By 1905 the company was largely dormant and later the mines would be owned by the Sykes Estate of which the Continental Illinois National Bank & Trust Co. of Chicago was the trustee. The eighth volume is a green cloth and green paper covered clam shell box which contains facsimiles of the maps from the expedition. The box is finished with details comparable to the other volumes. Each are small 4tos measuring 9" by 6". Volume I contains 374 pages of text; Volume II contains 386 pages; volume III contains 363 pages; volume IV contains 372 pages; volume V contains 395 pages; volume VI contains 280 pages; volume VII contains 534 pages and volume VIII contains the 16 page introduction to the atlas and index to the maps and all 71 individual maps labeled 1 through 54 all of which are in fine condition Dust jackets were not issued with this set. This set represents a facsimile reprint of the original 1905 edition of The American Philosophical Society which based its publication on the original documents in their library.
