EARLY SEVENTEENTH CENTURY WORK ON GOUT & RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS: : HUGUES DE SALINS' COPY. First edition of this rare work on the nature cause and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and gout. The status of gout in the late sixteenth century was such that gout was said by Turberville to be found in "horses capons and falcons." p. 64. John Gerard's Herball 1597 stated that Gout-wort or Herba Gerardi was a native herb that could be used with some benefit supported further by Culpeper. According to Copeman Thomas Sydenham 1624-1689 suffered from gout and wrote the classic description of the disease and was the first to be able to differentiate between rheumatoid arthritis and gout. The present work was written decades earlier. Francesco India cites Galen Chap. 1 Ambroise Pare Chap. 12 and Jean Fernel Chapters 5 7 8. India makes two 15-page tables of causes which he uses to organize his data. <br /><br /> PROVENANCE: Hugues de Salins: The British Library catalogue lists a "Hugues de Salins; see: Jean Baptiste de Salins Defense du vin de Bourgogne 1704." This may be a descendent. See: Societe d'Histoire d'Archeologie et de Litterature de l'arrondissement de Beaune Memoires annee 1890 Volumes 15-16 Beaune 1891 pp. 75 177. After the Civil War the government moved quickly to control the western Indian tribes and this treaty is one of the first actions taken. The treaty was concluded Oct. 19 1865 at Fort Sully Dakota Territory amended and proclaimed March 17 1866. The treaty calls for the Sioux's subjugation to the U.S. government the ceasing of Sioux attacks on whites and their withdrawal from overland routes made through their country. The government agrees to pay them $7000 annually for twenty years for allowing free travel on these routes. The treaty is signed in print by Brig. Gen. Sibley among others. 16113462Latin manuscript on vellum with large 6 in diameter suspended black wax seal of James I of England and autograph of Anne of Denmark dated July 23 1610 granting title to Corrodownan Manor in County Cavan Ulster to one John Browne Gent. of Gorgiemill near Edinburgh and his descendants during the Plantation i.e. colonization of Ulster under James I beginning in 1609. The colonists were settled on land confiscated from the Irish inhabitants following the conquest of Ulster 1594-1603 under James's predecessor Elizabeth I. The Plantation was intended to consolidate royal control of Ulster and repress rebellion by importing a substantial Protestant population. Like John Browne and indeed James himself many of the new colonists were Scottish. Some of these families went on to form the backbone of the Protestant Ascendancy in the province. John Browne and his heirs however were not among them. Sir George Carew sent by the king in 1611 to report on the progress of the Plantation noted that "he Browne . sent an agent who took possession set the lands to the Irish returned to Scotland and . performed nothing." The land was sold in 1613 to another Scottish colonist Archibald Acheson. Acheson's descendants were raised to the peerage of Ireland in 1806 as Earls of Gosford and still owned the property in the late nineteenth century. The first nineteen lines of the document grant the Scottish Browne the rights and privileges of James's English and Irish citizens. Especially notable are the requirement that the grantee maintain an adequate supply of arms for defense against the king's enemies lines 77-80 the attempt to encourage the growth of towns 74-76 and the ban on sale of the property to "mere Irish" or to anyone who failed to acknowledge the sovereign as head of the church thus excluding all Catholics by swearing the Oath of Supremacy 114-121. 1767S13771Heilbronn:: Franciscus Josephus Eckebrecht 1767. 1767. Tall 4to. 335 x 211 mm 228 4 pp. 47 plates; text with some foxing. Original paper over boards. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Rare. FINE. An extensive work on the morphology of boned fish cartilaginous fish sharks rays skates and cetaceans. This work is illustrated with forty-seven full-page engraved plates that are executed in superb form. Plate XLII shows a beached baleen whale and its enormous size compared to the men in the engraving. A bit fanciful plate XL shows a pair of Mermen; a fish on plate XXVII has the features of a human face whilst a 'shark' on plate VII has semi-human fore-limbs. Except for these anomalies the zoological drawings are quite dramatic and relatively accurate. Jonston's works were frequently re-edited and translated into German Latin Dutch and English. Born in Poland but of Scottish origin Jonston was educated and traveled extensively. He attended St. Andrews 1623-5 studying botany and medicine at Cambridge Leiden and Frankfurt Universities. He earned degrees from Cambridge and in Leiden his M. D. in 1632 where he later practiced medicine and gained a great reputation. In 1642 he briefly taught at Frankfurt as professor of medicine. He retired to his private estate in Silesia in 1655. His "four dictionary-style works on fish birds quadrupeds and insects -- published between 1650 and 1653 with excellent illustrations -- were widely read and translated." DSB. Ritson's first book in which he attacks Thomas Warton's History of English Poetry in such vitriolic tones -- Warton is a preternder a cheater and a liar -- as to cause quite a contretemps in late 18th century English literary circles. One assumes this actually pleased Ritson as he went on the next year to attack Samuel Johnson and George Steevens. Eventually Ritson went complete mad barricading himself in his rooms at Gray's Inn and setting fire to a pile of manuscripts. In an attractive later binding in red half-goat over marbled board with raised bands. We assume the binder was charged with binding a group of different books to a uniform size -- the title page is trimmed and mounted and all the other leaves are folded neatly to fit the bottom edge and then the leading edge over it.
