20884Warley Mount Brentwood 30 October 1901. 19pp foolscap 8vo. On five bifoliums. Neatly and closely written. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Tower's letter begins: 'My dear Dick I enclose a chart not present which will show you at a glance my yachting cruises during the past season'. The rest of letter consists of extracts from Tower's diary 4 April to 12 September 1901 describing with the care one would expect from an engineer 'one of the best long vacation cruises on record' and ending with a table of 'Distances sailed by me in Gwnfa' from Brightlingsea to Harwich Antwerp 'Abortive attempt from Flushing' Flushing Dover Portsmouth Dieppe Maestrand Copenhagen Kiel Brunsbutell Hamburg Cuxhaven Lowestoft' totalling 2135 miles. Tower adds this to the total steamed in another ship 'Ingani' 'making a grand total for the seaon of 1901 of 3508 miles'. In businesslike fashion Tower notes times position weather and significant incidents. A representative entry reads: 'Tues 13th. Very fine weather Lat 54.40 N Long 6.22 E by obs. At noon Wind dropped at 4.pm. We were amongst a fleet of German steam trawlers. Sent a boat to one of them and got a bucket full of fine Plaice becalmed all night'. See Tower's obituary in Minutes of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers vol.162 1905 pt 4 which describes his connection with the sea his 'principal work' being 'the gyroscopic “steady platform†for guns and searchlights … The device was submitted to the Admiralty and after being thoroughly tested was fitted to two gunboats on which it answered very well; but ultimately the Admiralty rejected the apparatus on account of the extra weight involved … Mr. Tower nevertheless proceeded to adapt the platform for passenger-seats on cross-channel steamers'. The recipient Sir Richard Harington 12th Baronet 1861-1931 would not succeed to the baronetcy until the death of his father in 1911. Himself a keen yachtsman he was a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal between 1899 and 1913. From the Harington family papers. Some marginal brownspots margins slightly soiled light browning an creasing.

First printing of an importent paper in the history of photochemistry as he here discovered some effects of coloured rays of the solar spectrum."Edmund Becquerel seems to be the first person to observe in 1840 in the paper offered that the latent daguerreotype image which had been underexposed could be intensified if re-exposed to the yellow and red rays of the spectrum and then developed with mercury. Explaining this phenomenon Becquerel called the yellow-red continuing rays "rayon continuateurs" in contrast to the primary rays which exicited or produced the light image and which he called exiciting rays "rayons excitateurs". They are dependent on the wave lenght of the light."Eder "History of Photography" pp. 265 ff."Becquerel was an early experimenter in photography. In 1840 he discovered that the silver halides natively insensitive to red and yellow light became sensitive to that part of the spectrum in proportion to their exposure to blue violet and ultraviolet light allowing Daguerreotypes and other photographic materials to be developed by bathing in strong red or yellow light rather than by chemical treatment. In practice this technique was rarely used." Wikipedia. unknown

Hittorp 1533.

A most attractive sammelband of two well-illustrated books in an attractive contemporary blind-stamped binding probably made at the Stavelot monastery in Belgium.

I. First collected and illustrated edition of the scientific writings of the Venerable Bede including De Natura Rerum dealing with cosmology and natural history and De Temporum Ratione a work on chronology that still exercises a considerable influence over our daily life today. This edition was edited and commented upon by Joannes Noviomagus i.e. Jan van Bronchorst of Nijmegen 1494-1570 philosopher and mathematician then a professor of philosophy at the Collegium Montanum in Cologne. It would appear that he used the manuscript at the Dombibliothek no. 103 of Cologne to prepare this edition.

The De Temporum Ratione is a significant book in several ways. Most notably “this book helped to establish the custom of counting years from the birth of Christ. When we say that Queen Elizabeth II was born in 1926 not ‘in the 16th year of the reign of George V’ or ‘in the year 2678 after the foundation of Rome’ or in the ‘2nd year of the 481st Olympiad’ we are indebted to the Venerable Bede.â€â€“Printing & the Mind of Man 16n.

“Bede’s greatest practical effect was on the Western calendar. His decisions beginning the year calculation of Easter names of days and months calculations of eras and so forth in most instances finally determined usage that was only refined not changed by Gregorian reform.â€â€“D.S.B. I p. 565.

“The De Ratione Temporum first published in 1505 is particularly important. It contains a remarkable theory of tides based upon Pliny but also upon personal observation; first mention of the establishment of a port i.e. the mean interval between the moon’s meridian passage and high water following; this interval is different in different ports.â€â€“Sarton I p. 511. Pierre Duhem described Bede’s establishment of a port as the only original formulation of nature to be made in the West for some eight centuries.

Also contained here is the De Natura Rerum 1st printing: 1529 which contains such physical science as was then known. It collects the wisdom of the ancient world on these subjects and has the special merit of referring phenomena to natural causes. It contains a particularly important section — the “De Comptu vel Loquela digitorum†— which is “our main almost our only source for the study of mediaeval finger reckoning or symbolism.â€â€“Sarton I pp. 510-11. See also Smith History of Mathematics II p. 200.

The rest of the book contains further treatises by Bede on arithmetic astronomy and the calendar and chronology.

II. Small nicks on the cloth at the spine ends small finger pressure mark on front gutter tiny ink spot on foredge and some scattered foxing but a nice and fresh near fine copy. An attempt by the important educator reformer and sister of Harriet Beecher Stowe to promote the cause of her pupil author Delia Bacon in the aftermath of a matrimonial breach of promise suit and her prosecution in the court of public opinion by the authorities at Yale whom Beecher felt had thwarted her case. Bacon would seek solace in her research popularizing the notion that Shakespeare's works were actually written by a group of writers including Francis Bacon and Walter Scott. A very nice copy seldom found thus. Phillips, Samson & Co hardcover
