1802B5905Roma: : Work I: Roma: Niccola de Antoni; Work II: Roma: n.p. Work I: c. 1802; Work II: c.1770. . A handsome fine example. Prints are clean and crisp. . Binding: Skillfully rebacked half calf preserving contemporary blue speckled - marbled boards. Spine raised with six 6 bands; compartments elegantly gilt ornamented at borders corners and centres and gilt lettered title on two. Notes: Work I: Raphael 1483-1520 painted the ceilings walls and columns of the Vatican Logge over the two-year period before he would pass away. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period. These particular images are renowned for their clarity and accessibility. Much of the subject matter on the columns is traced to Roman iconography. Such items as coins vases sarcophagi and various other items are done with stunning clarity and accuracy. Carlo Lasinio 1759 – 1838 was an Italian engraver who worked chiefly in Florence. Lasinio started as a painter at the Accademia di Belle Arti Venice. He quickly placed more emphasis on printmaking especially after moving to Florence in 1778. He established his reputation with two large series of etchings in 1787 and 1789. Lasinio also taught engraving at the Accademia in Florence becoming a Professor in 1800.

Work II: A collection of plates from this work with no title page. The Raphael fresco decorations in the Vatican's three-storied balconies known as the 'Logge' quickly became famous and various suites of plates were issued from the 17th century onward. A set of the present engravings stimulated Catherine the Great to have a replica of the Logge built at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

Size: Folio 621x478mm. 1786NS0165Paris Chez. M.DCC. LXXXVI 1786. This is a continuation of the history of "Revolutions in England" by the Jesuit Pierre D'Orleans first published 1695. This Histoire is the story of the Stuarts as rulers and pretenders considered as the legitimate Catholic rulers of England unfairly usurped. Turpin continues the story from the expulsion of James II through efforts to recover the throne. The rarity of these volumes may reflect the fact that France faced a more violent revolution within three years and neither side cared much for the fate of the Stuarts after that. 149455951494. 148 leaves including the final blank Roman letter except for the two-line title in gothic type 51 lines & headline capital spaces with guide letters. Folio 290 x 188 mm. late 17th-cent. panelled English speckled calf rebacked with the orig. spine laid-down minor staining to a few leaves in blank upper margins. Basel: J. Amerbach 1494.

First edition of the “first bibliography to be compiled as a practical work of reference.â€â€“Grolier Club Bibliography 7.

Tritheim 1462-1516 one of the leading polymaths of his age was appointed the 25th abbot of the monastery at Sponheim in 1483. “One of the first of his many self-imposed tasks was the reorganization and cataloguing of the monastic library if one can call reorganization the process of transforming forty-eight mongrel volumes into a splendid collection of 2000 printed books and manuscripts many of great importance and rarity…

“It was during the progress of this work no doubt as his exceptional knowledge of books caused inquiries frequently to be addressed to him that he conceived the notion of compiling a new and ambitious bibliography of ecclesiastical writers. He began work in 1487 and by the spring of 1492 he was able to send the complete manuscript to the bishop of Worms. He then revised it and in 1494 the Liber de scriptoribus ecclesiasticis a folio of nearly 300 pages issued from the Basle press of Johann Amerbach…

“From Alexander bishop of Cappadocia down to himself Tritheim sets out in chronological order nearly a thousand writers largely but not exclusively ecclesiastical giving a short account of each followed by a list of his or her writings. Nor are these lists merely perfunctory: it is obvious from such a heading as that for St. Augustine under which he enumerates 277 works that Tritheim must have lavished an immense amount of genuine research on his bibliography. In all about 7000 books are recorded. An alphabetical index of authors arranged of course by Christian names is added. The contrast between the feeble theological bibliographies of the manuscript age and this first attempt in the printing era is very striking.â€â€“Besterman The Beginnings of Systematic Bibliography pp. 7-8.

The title of the book is somewhat misleading since the work is not restricted to ecclesiastical writers but also includes authors such as Dante Poggio and Sebastian Brant.

A fine and crisp copy of a book which has become uncommon on the market preserved in a box. 006887Nürnberg: Trautner. Hardcover. Paper pastedown on slightly limp boards. Very Good. Early depiction of General Washington in Germany -- possibly the first such. N.d. circa late 1780s. We can date these generally to the late 1780s because Frederick the Great's death in 1786 is noted but Joseph II is still presented as alive but he died in early 1790. Folio 32 by 20 cm. 33 pages with mounted content including 15 double paged plates measuring 32 by 38.5 cm or thereabouts. The sixteenth plate is double paged half the page height -- this plate was somewhat crudely cut probably in half. In these plates there are about 345 separate images or cells -- the cell count is not hard and fast as there are instances in which two cells can be regarded as a single illustration or cell. The vast majority of the cells or illustrations relate to military men and many of these are equestrian images with the commander or officer mounted on horse. We also find rows of soldiers that can be viewed as if on parade or alternatively like cells in a movie. Military costume and regalia isn't the only subject however. Two of the plates are devoted mostly to the hunt and shooting. In these hunters are shown holding up firearms to various prey. And one plate depicts biblical scenes or subjects. In these plates brief captions can identify the subject. Thus we know that one of the pictures is of Washington who certainly would have been an international celebrity in the late 1780s. The hand-coloring of the prints is a fairly crude stencil and the palette of colors is not extensive. Dominating are blues oranges greens and golds. Not to be slighted is the first page in this album which is an entirely different sort of artwork and seemingly bears no relation to the rest of the contents. This page presents a depiction of Saint Catherine with the saint and her executioner depicted in a printed oval set as a centerpiece surrounded by foliate tracery intricately cut out like lacework. Surrounding all of this is a paper frame all from the same sheet as far as we can discern. The paper and the center oval are mounted onto the album leaf and thus the lacework given the whole thing some dimensionality. The coloring of this specimen of folk art is also richer and more refined than applies to the stenciling of the prints to follow. Scarce -- we could no other examples of Trautner's military prints not to speak of collection of this size on OCLC First Search or elsewhere. Condition: the cover has considerable wear with some crinkling of the paper pastedown some surface loss to the paper and soiling. Spine has a fair amount of paper pastedown loss. The first page with the Saint Catherine artwork has some loss to the tracery but we would also assert that it is remarkable that so much of it has survived intact. The paper framing is considerable soiled with some running of the coloring onto that paper and elsewhere in the artwork. The Trautner prints have light soiling comprised of margin smudging and a light dampstain affecting a few of the prints but overall these read as mostly clean. We noted that the last print is partial. Trautner hardcover

002725Illinois State Penitentiary: Vocational School. Dark wraps w/light soiling/staining. RARE. A 44pp. booklet printed at the penitentiary around 1949-53. Probably closer to 1949 as per text Richard Daley was Mayor. There is a story titled 'Straight from the Shoulder" which is printed throughout the booklet. Interspersed are a lot of quotations regarding crime and deterence from Vips from Illinois. The chicago reporter for the Tribune James Doherty started the idea of having "Three Strikes agaisnt Crime" in the city of Chicago. Chester Gould got behind the idea and contributed quite a few drawings and wrote the story including Doherty as "Big Jim" a character in the short novelette. The back cover also incorporates a postcard that was to be sent to the Warden at Stateville for more information about crime prevention. Here is a quote from the forward of the book: "I am one of the guys who traded his name for a number. I work in the print shop at Stateville. Matter of fact I set the type for this booklet.I hear the booklet's going to be handed out to the Chicago High Schools." Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall . Good. Printed Blue wraps/tracy. This is one of the brightest and well preserved copies we have studied. RARE FIRST EDITION. A CIVIL WAR ERA RARITY. AN IMPORTANT WORK ABOUT FORMER SLAVES CELEBRATING THEIR FIRST CHRISTMAS AFTER EMANCIPATION the story reflects Northern sentiments and pro-emancipation ideals and recounts the first Christmas in the North celebrated by fugitive slaves and those liberated by the Emancipation Proclamation.
This scarce first edition is an important fugitive slave novel. The first edition was published toward the end of the Civil War then re-issued in 1865 at the war's conclusion. It is perhaps the first novel to discuss openly the "N" word and its possible derivation from the word "niger" and how the word was used to denigrate the individual and persist in pre-emancipation prejudice.
CONTRABAND CHRISTMAS tells the story of formerly enslaved people “contrabands†who have taken refuge with Union forces. As Christmas approaches they will be experiencing the holiday as free individuals for the first time. The story culminates in a Christmas gathering filled with hymns prayer and reflection. Themes include freedom slavery faith human dignity and the transformative impact of the Civil War. One point of note CONTRABAND CHRISTMAS contains one of the earliest explanations of the entirely derogatory character of the "N" word.
Worldcat credits the author as being Taylor Root but it is sometimes attributed to William Henry Hurlbert. Artist Augustus Hoppin was well known at this time for his Civil War imagery found in Harper's Weekly. E. P. Dutton and Company hardcover
