Signed and inscribed by the author and members of the Stewart and Pittman families who led the company through the years. All inscriptions are to "Doc" and signers are Michael Thoele L.L. Stub Stewart Dorothy Chapman Stewart and S.E. Pitt Pittman. A very good copy with wear at the spine heel and 2 previous owner's inscriptions to the front pastedown one of whom is "Doc". Sometimes attributed to Theophilus Presbyter sometimes to Roger of Helmarshausen. The book allows detailed insights into the techniques used in the applied arts in the high Middle Ages. The work is divided into three books. The first covers the production and use of painting and drawing materials painting techniques paints and ink especially for illumination of texts and painting of walls. The second deals with the production of stained glass and techniques of glass painting while the last deals with various techniques of goldsmithing and other metalwork. It also includes an introduction into the building of organs. Translation and notes by Robert Hendrie. An ex-library copy in publisher's blind-stamped green cloth gilt lettered. Text block is clean and sound although quite shaken. Binding is frayed along part of the rear joint but board remains firmly attached. Spine with patchy fading around the foot external library shelf mark neatly removed. li 447 pages 2 chromolitho plates a frontispiece and an extra title . index. Size approx. 9" by 6". He was banished from Paris several times on grounds of blasphemy indecency etc. yet managed always to return usually under the protection of the Duc de Montmorency and in fact died in Paris. Lyon. On first leaf of a bifolium with reverse of second leaf addressed with postmarks to 'The Relieving Officers Basingstoke Union Hants'. In good condition on aged paper. The document carries the signature of 'Wm. <Scadding Scudding>' and is made out 'To the Relieving Officers and Master of the Workhouse of the Basingstoke Union.' The first paragraph reads: 'Gentlemen A meeting of Relieving Officers and Masters of Workhouses will be holden at the Fighting Cocks Inn in Thame in the County of Oxford on Saturday the Eighteenth day of November instant at 10 o'clock in the Forenoon which will be the foundation day of the above Society when the Rules revised by the Committee appointed at the last meeting for the government thereof will be submitted for approval and signature sic those persons desirous of joining the said Society.' The document proceeds to describe the 'object of the Society' and lists 'the annual sum to be paid by members quarterly according to age at the time of admission to secure the allowance above named'. There are eight age bands from '21 to 25' receiving an 'Annual Sum' of £4 4s 0d to '55 - 60' receiving £10 10s 0d a year. Scarce: no copies located on COPAC or WorldCat and no reference to the Society which may have changed its name on foundation in The Times. Thame [Oxfordshire]. 6 November 1837.
