Thick folio 350 x 210 mm. cont. calf well-rebacked by Trevor Lloyd with the original spine laid-down a few gouges carefully filled-in corners bruised panelled in gilt & blind large gilt device in center of each cover with initials "W H" on either side. London: A. Islip for J. Norton & R. Whitakers 1633. First edition of Thomas Johnson's expanded and corrected version of Gerarde's Herball 1st ed.: 1597 the most famous of all English herbals. "Many errors made by Gerard in his text and in the identification of the illustrations were corrected by the apothecary and botanist Thomas Johnson d. 1644 of London who prepared an expanded edition of The Herball that first appeared in 1633.Johnson's painstaking revision of Gerard's herbal constituted in itself a valuable contribution to botany and to the art of the printed book. He added the descriptions of many new plants with illustrations some of them borrowed from the botanical texts published by Christophe Plantin in Antwerp in this way bringing the total number of engravings to 2776. Any new passages were carefully marked with special symbols so that the reader could distinguish them from the original text. "The title-page of The Herball is particularly attractive. It was executed by John Payne 1607-1647 one of the most talented engravers of the period. In the upper part of Payne's work we see a luxuriant garden with the goddesses Ceres and Pomona on either side. Below them are the fathers of botany Theophrastus and Dioscorides while in the lower section two imposing vases filled with flowers surround a portrait of Gerard who is shown facing in the opposite direction to that of the portrait by Rogers. The vase on the left is crowned with a bunch of bananas as a tribute to Johnson. "One of the most significant additions made by Johnson was his chapter on the 'Maracot' or 'Grandilla' as it was called at the time actually the passion-flower. He includes a full page illustration p. 1592 and refers the reader to Monardes for more information on this exotic species. In the long preface Johnson traces the history of the botanical sciences analyzing the contributions of celebrated figures from the mythical King Solomon to William Turner. He closes with some critical remarks on John Gerard and the origins of his herbal."-Tomasi & Willis An Oak Spring Herbaria p. 84. An uncommonly nice and crisp copy. Bookplates of John Charles Bigham Viscount Mersey Bignor Park and Oliver Howard. ❧ Garrison-Morton 1820-1st ed. of 1597-"The most important edition of his book is the second published by T. 1972145005Burbank CA: Warner Brothers 1972. Original maquette demonstrating an early poster design for the 1973 film featuring a vintage silver gelatin photograph of the legendary streetlit scene of Father Merrin's first arrival to Georgetown in the film mounted to the poster.

A minimal design without the credits information seen in the completed original "purple style" poster variant and with a proposed but ultimately unrealized release date of Christmas Day shown at the bottom margin. This maquette compares both to the "purple style" poster in its use of said purple text but also to the original black and white "special poster" design both in size and compositional austerity. The "special poster" measured 25 x 19 inches as opposed to the standard 27 x 41 inches for the one sheet and stated nothing but the film's title and the stark photo of Father Merrin.

Based on the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty and written for the screen by Blatty. One of the great genre films of the 1970s that accomplished the uncommon feat of being an over-the-top sensation upon its release and gaining subsequent status as a classic with a strangeness and depth supplied by Ellen Burstyn and Max von Sydow that only increases with repeated viewings. Another distinction was that it walked away with two Oscars including Best Screenplay for Blatty along with eight nominations including Best Picture a feat nearly unheard for a horror film.

Set in Washington DC and shot on location in Washington DC notably Georgetown University New York City and Mosul Iraq.

18 x 12.5 inches mounted on a 30 x 20 inch mat. Black with the vintage black and white photo of Father Merrin affixed at the center and a hand painted release date. Title letters are hand cut from purple paper and affixed in place. Good condition with water damage to the bottom three inches of the mat and with soil and loss of glue adhesion to the white mat. 16711002105London: E.T. and R.H. for H. Brome B. Tooke and T. Sawbridge 1671. First edition in English of the complete Colloquia Familiaria of Erasmus first published in 1518 and expanded by Erasmus over the next fifteen years a lively collection of Latin dialogues that found a readership far beyond the Renaissance schoolroom. Originally intended to model colloquial conversation for students of Latin the dialogues feature pointed free-thinking exchanges on modern political religious and philosophical questions. In "Of the Abbot and Learned Woman" an ignorant abbot tries and fails to get the better of the classically educated Magdalia a character almost certainly based on Thomas More's eldest daughter: "I think thou art some sophistress thou protest so wittily." Magdalia: "I will not tell thee what I think thou art." And later: "I have often heard it usually spoken that a wise woman is twice a fool." Magdalia: "Indeed it useth to be said so but by fools." The Colloquia Familiaria was widely read and debated across Europe drawing immediate notice for its anticlerical satire: "its influence on the dialogues of Reformation Germany and Tudor England is a critical commonplace" Zlatar Reformation Fictions 11. The original purpose of the Colloquies as a text for teaching Latin postponed its direct translation; this first complete English edition was published more than 150 years after the work's first appearance. The edition opens with a short life of Erasmus and concludes with the first appearance in English of De utilitate colloquiorum Erasmus's 1526 defense of the Colloquies published after the Sorbonne condemned the book for impiety. In response Erasmus makes a case for the educational value of his dialogues' humor: "I cannot tell whether any thing be learned more successfully than that which is learned in playing." Despite his efforts the Colloquies would remain on the Papal Index of banned books through the end of the nineteenth century. Wing E-3190; PMM 53. A very good copy of a humanist landmark in a handsome contemporary binding. Octavo measuring 6.5 x 4.25 inches: 8 555 1.
